There is no universal winner. Xbox Game Pass is usually the better fit if you use Xbox and/or PC, want Xbox-published releases on day one, or will use included benefits such as cloud gaming and EA Play. PlayStation Plus is the more natural choice for PlayStation owners who mainly need online multiplayer, monthly games, the Extra Game Catalog, or Premium’s classics, trials and cloud streaming.
This comparison uses prices and features displayed on the official US pages on October 13, 2026. Prices, promotions, catalogs, supported devices and features change. Check the current Xbox Game Pass page, Xbox plan comparison and PlayStation Plus page before paying.

Quick verdict: which service is worth it for you?
Start with the device you actually use, then compare the games and extras you will use during the billing period. A larger advertised library is not automatically better value if it is on the wrong platform or lacks the games you want.

US prices and plan benefits at a glance
The following are the prices displayed on official US pages on October 13, 2026. They are recurring subscription prices unless the page identifies an introductory promotion. Xbox’s pages state that terms and prices can change, and both companies warn that library availability changes.
| Service and tier | Displayed US price | Benefits established on the official page |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | $22.99 per month | 500+ games across console, PC and supported devices; day-one new releases; cloud gaming; EA Play; Fortnite Crew; Ubisoft+ Classics; online console multiplayer; and rewards. |
| Xbox Game Pass Premium | $14.99 per month after a displayed first-14-days-for-$1 offer | 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices; game streaming; Xbox-published games joining within 12 months of launch; no day-one access. |
| Xbox Game Pass Essential | Price not stated in the returned official comparison extract | 50+ games across Xbox console, PC and supported devices; online console multiplayer; and in-game benefits. New releases are not included on day one. Check the live Xbox page for the current price. |
| PC Game Pass | Price not stated in the returned official comparison extract | 300+ PC games, day-one titles, in-game benefits and EA Play. Check the live Xbox page for the current price. |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | $10.99 per month; $27.99 per three months; $79.99 per 12 months | Monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play and exclusive content. |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | $16.99 per month; $43.99 per three months; $134.99 per 12 months | Everything in Essential, plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | $19.99 per month; $54.99 per three months; $159.99 per 12 months | Everything in Extra, plus the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog. |
PlayStation’s displayed 12-month prices cost less per month than paying for 12 separate monthly subscriptions: about $6.67 per month for Essential, $11.25 for Extra and $13.33 for Premium when the full annual payment is divided by 12. That is a budgeting comparison, not a claim that you will use the service for all 12 months. Choose the billing period you realistically expect to keep.
The $1 Xbox Premium figure is an introductory offer shown for the first 14 days, not the normal recurring price. Confirm the renewal amount and cancellation terms at checkout. Xbox subscriptions continue automatically unless canceled, and the companies can change prices or terms.
What Xbox Game Pass provides
Ultimate: the broadest Xbox bundle
Ultimate is the only listed Xbox tier in this comparison that explicitly combines day-one new releases with cloud gaming, console and PC access, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer and rewards. Xbox advertises 500+ games across console, PC and supported devices. “Day one” refers to releases included through the plan; it should not be read as a promise that every third-party game launches there.
Ultimate makes the most sense when you will use more than one part of the bundle. Someone who plays only an occasional console game may not use EA Play, cloud gaming or the PC catalog enough to justify the highest monthly price. Conversely, a player who would otherwise buy several new Xbox-published games at launch may value the day-one access more than a smaller tier’s lower fee.
Premium: a lower-cost library with delayed Xbox-published releases
Premium lists 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices and includes game streaming. Xbox says Xbox-published games join Premium within 12 months of launch, so this tier does not provide the day-one access advertised for Ultimate. It is a compromise for players who want a substantial catalog and streaming but can wait for first-party releases.

The displayed $14.99 monthly price follows a first-14-days-for-$1 offer. Treat that $1 as a temporary introductory charge, check the regular renewal price, and cancel before renewal if you only wanted to test the service.
Recommended Free Tools
Essential: the smaller catalog and online-multiplayer option
Essential is described as 50+ games across Xbox console, PC and supported devices, online console multiplayer and in-game benefits. It does not include new releases on day one. The current price was not stated in the official comparison extract used here, so do not rely on an old price from another article; use the live Xbox plan page before subscribing.
PC Game Pass: for a PC-first library
PC Game Pass lists 300+ games on PC, day-one titles, in-game benefits and EA Play. Its price was not stated in the returned official comparison extract. If you do not own an Xbox console, compare this plan with Ultimate based on the PC catalog and the specific games you intend to play rather than paying for console-oriented features you will not use.
What PlayStation Plus provides
Essential: the baseline PlayStation membership
Essential includes monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play and exclusive content. At $10.99 monthly, $27.99 for three months or $79.99 for 12 months on the displayed US page, it is the relevant comparison when your main requirement is playing paid online games and receiving the monthly-game benefit.
Essential does not include the Extra Game Catalog or Premium’s classics, trials and cloud streaming. If you are considering Essential only because a particular game is in a catalog, verify that the title is actually included at that tier.

Extra includes all Essential benefits plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. The displayed prices are $16.99 monthly, $43.99 for three months and $134.99 for 12 months. Extra is the middle choice for PlayStation owners who want a larger rotating selection to download and play without paying for Premium’s additional features.

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
“Hundreds” in a catalog description does not mean a permanent list. Games can leave, differ by region and vary by platform. Check the current listing for each game you care about before choosing Extra.
Premium: classics, trials and cloud streaming
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog to Extra. The displayed prices are $19.99 monthly, $54.99 for three months and $159.99 for 12 months. Premium is worth the difference over Extra only when you will use those additions, such as trying a game before buying it, streaming supported games instead of downloading them, or playing titles in the Classics Catalog.
PlayStation says that from January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently. That notice makes it especially important to inspect the current catalog rather than assuming a steady flow of PS4 additions.
The differences that decide value
1. Platform and device fit
PlayStation Plus is built around PlayStation consoles and PlayStation account features. Xbox lists console, PC and supported-device access across its plans, with the exact combination depending on the tier and platform. Eliminate plans you cannot use before comparing prices: a PlayStation-only household cannot benefit from PC Game Pass, and an Xbox/PC household cannot use PlayStation’s catalog without a PlayStation platform.
2. Release timing
Ultimate advertises day-one new releases. Premium, Essential and Extra do not make the same Xbox day-one promise, and Premium’s Xbox-published games arrive within 12 months rather than at launch. This matters most if you normally buy new games immediately. It matters less if you play older games, wait for discounts or prefer a rotating catalog.
3. Catalog size versus catalog relevance
Xbox advertises 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential and 300+ for PC Game Pass. PlayStation describes hundreds in the Extra and Premium Game Catalogs. These are vendor-published headline counts, not independent measures of quality or playtime. A 50-game plan can be better value than a 500-game plan if it contains the two games you will finish and the broader plan does not work on your device.
Rank #4
- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
4. Premium extras
Ultimate’s extra bundle is centered on day-one releases, cloud gaming, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, rewards and cross-device access. Premium’s extras are centered on PlayStation classics, trials, cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog. Pick the bundle whose extras replace something you would otherwise pay for or meaningfully change how you play.
5. Online multiplayer and basic access
Xbox lists online console multiplayer with Ultimate and Essential. PlayStation includes online multiplayer with Essential and therefore with Extra and Premium. If online play is your only reason to subscribe, compare the entry tiers and the games you actually play instead of paying for a larger catalog.
6. Billing commitment
Monthly billing is flexible but can cost more over a full year. Annual billing lowers the effective monthly cost on the displayed PlayStation prices, but you pay for the entire 12-month period up front. Xbox’s displayed plans are monthly in this snapshot; verify the current checkout options. Do not compare an annual PlayStation figure with one month of Xbox and call the result a fair annual value.
A practical method for choosing
- Write down every device you will use. Mark Xbox console, Windows PC, PlayStation console and any supported streaming device. Remove plans that do not serve your setup.
- List the games you will play during the next billing period. Check each title on the service’s current catalog page, including its tier, platform and region. Do not assume that a game shown in a general advertisement is included in every plan.
- Separate launch purchases from back-catalog play. If you expect to play Xbox-published releases on launch day, Ultimate is the Xbox tier that advertises that benefit. If you are happy to wait up to 12 months for those games, Premium may be sufficient.
- Mark the extras you will actually use. Count cloud sessions, PC access, EA Play, game trials, classics, streaming and other listed benefits only if they fit your habits. Ignore an included feature that you will never open.
- Choose a billing period. Use a monthly plan for a short backlog project or uncertain schedule. Use a three- or 12-month PlayStation plan only when the lower effective monthly cost outweighs the commitment.
- Check the renewal screen. Confirm the regular recurring price, the date billing starts, the introductory period if any, and how to cancel automatic renewal. A promotional first charge is not the long-term price.
- Recheck before renewal. Catalog departures, additions, prices and supported devices can change. If the games that justified the subscription have left, cancel or move to a lower tier before the next charge.
Worked value examples
You play one new Xbox release and several older games
Ultimate’s day-one access may avoid buying that new Xbox-published title separately, while its 500+ advertised games and PC/cloud features provide a broader library. The decision is favorable only if you can play enough of the included catalog during the months you pay; otherwise buying the one game and using a cheaper tier may cost less.
You play on Xbox but rarely buy new releases
Premium’s 200+ advertised games and game streaming may cover an older backlog at a lower displayed monthly price than Ultimate. The trade-off is waiting for Xbox-published games to enter the library within 12 months and losing Ultimate’s listed EA Play, Fortnite Crew and other bundle benefits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou own a PlayStation and mainly play online
Essential supplies online multiplayer and monthly games at $10.99 monthly, with lower effective monthly cost on the displayed three- and 12-month options. Extra is worthwhile only when you will download games from its Game Catalog; Premium requires a further step up for classics, trials, streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog.
Best Value
- Slim Design, players get powerful gaming technology packed inside a sleek and compact console design.
- 825GB of storage, keep your favorite games raeady and waiting for you to jump in and play
- Ultra-High Speed SSD, maximize yoru play sessions with near instant load times for installed PS5 games
- Integrated I/O, the custom integration of the PS5 console's systems lets creators pull datat from the SSD so quickly that they can design games in ways never before possible
- Ray Tracing, immerse yourself in owrlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games
You alternate between a PC and console
Compare the devices supported by the exact Xbox tier. Ultimate explicitly spans console, PC and supported devices, while PC Game Pass is described as a PC plan with 300+ games and EA Play. Paying for both services is not automatically better: calculate whether the second catalog contains games you will actually play.
Catalog changes, regions and availability
Xbox states: “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, XBOX Game Pass plan, and platform.” PlayStation likewise says its library varies over time and tier. The counts in the table are therefore snapshots of plan descriptions, not permanent inventories.
Before purchase, open the official plan page for your country, select the tier, and search for each must-play title. Confirm whether the game is downloadable or streamable, whether it is available on your device, and whether access is limited to a higher tier. If you travel or use an account registered in another country, use that account’s regional catalog and currency.
Use the official pages for the final check: Xbox’s comparison page, Xbox Game Pass overview, PlayStation Plus plans and catalog information and PlayStation Plus support.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing unlike billing periods: compare one month with one month, three months with three months or a full year with a full year.
- Treating an offer as a normal price: the $1 first-14-days Xbox Premium offer is promotional; check the recurring charge that follows.
- Assuming every new game is day one: the day-one statement applies to the Xbox Ultimate benefit as described by Xbox, not to every third-party release.
- Using a catalog count as a guarantee: 500+, 300+, 200+, 50+ and “hundreds” can change and do not prove that your preferred titles are included.
- Ignoring platform restrictions: a feature listed for supported devices may not apply to every console, PC or region. Read the plan-specific availability notice.
- Paying annually for a short project: a lower effective monthly rate is not a saving if you stop playing after one or two months.
- Forgetting automatic renewal: record the renewal date and cancel before it if the subscription was only for a trial, launch window or backlog.
- Assuming PS4 additions remain constant: PlayStation says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026, so inspect current additions instead of expecting a fixed schedule.
Bottom line: match the tier to your play pattern
Choose Xbox Game Pass Ultimate when Xbox/PC access, day-one Xbox-published releases and its cloud, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics bundle are worth $22.99 per month to you. Choose Xbox Premium when you want a sizable cross-device catalog and streaming but can wait for Xbox-published games to arrive within 12 months; Essential or PC Game Pass can be the better fit when your needs are narrower.
Choose PlayStation Plus Essential for core online play and monthly games, Extra for the downloadable Game Catalog, and Premium for classics, trials, cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog. The subscription worth buying is the one that works on your platform, contains the games you will play during the period you pay for, and has extras you will actually use. Recheck the live regional plan page and every must-play title immediately before subscribing.
