Control D is a configurable DNS service: you create a profile of filtering rules, attach one or more endpoints, and point a device or network at the resolver details shown in your dashboard. It can block or redirect requests without requiring an app in many configurations. A 14-day business trial is listed with no credit card, while larger deployments use tailored pricing.
The practical choice is where to deploy it. A device-level endpoint follows one computer or phone, a router endpoint covers a home or office network, and software-based deployment suits managed fleets. The sections below explain the plan terms, exact setup model, supported platforms, router limitations, and what the published logging periods actually mean.

What Control D does
Control D sits in the DNS layer. When an application asks for the address of a domain, the configured resolver applies the profile’s rules before returning an answer. Rules can filter categories, block individual services, or redirect requests to another destination. The dashboard is where those rules, profiles, endpoints, and activity views are managed.

(Control D personal service page). DNS filtering is not the same as an antivirus or a full traffic tunnel: it evaluates name lookups, so traffic to an already-known IP address or content delivered from an allowed domain may not be affected.

Plans, trial terms, and who pays for what
Control D’s business pricing page describes an endpoint-based self-serve option for small and medium-sized businesses, plus custom arrangements for larger or specialized organizations. The page lists a 14-day free trial without a credit card. Because plan names, prices, and included features can change, check the live pricing page immediately before starting an account (Control D pricing).
| Deployment or customer type | What the published page says | What to confirm before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| SMB self-serve | Pricing is calculated per endpoint. Paid plans include core DNS filtering, customization options, and dashboard access for rules, analytics, and profiles. | Current per-endpoint rate, billing interval, endpoint definition, and any limits. |
| Enterprise | Tailored conversations and pricing rather than a single public figure. | Volume terms, support, identity or policy integrations, and retention terms in the proposal. |
| Schools and non-profits | Specialized options are offered through a custom discussion. | Eligibility, discounts, administrative controls, and contract terms. |
| MSP or channel deployment | Custom options are described for managed-service and channel use cases. | Tenant separation, delegation, endpoint accounting, and partner agreement details. |
| Trial | 14 days, with no credit card stated as required on the current pricing page. | Whether the offer still applies in your region and what happens when the trial ends. |
Control D states that every paid plan includes core DNS filtering, customization, and access to the dashboard for managing rules, analytics, and profiles (pricing FAQ). The page also lists DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, DNS-over-QUIC, DNS-over-HTTPS/3, and legacy DNS. Which of those appears for you depends on the endpoint and deployment method, so use the setup instructions generated in your account rather than assuming every protocol is available on every device.

Three objects make the service understandable:
- Profile: the collection of filters, blocklists, redirects, and other rules you want applied.
- Endpoint: the resolver identity that associates a device or network with a profile. It supplies the DNS details you will enter on the device, browser, router, or management system.
- Analytics: the activity view used to confirm that queries are reaching Control D and to investigate an allow or block decision.
The official quick-start flow is to create a profile, connect endpoint(s), configure DNS, and verify activity in Analytics (Control D Quick Setup). The deployment documentation expands the same sequence for individual endpoints and managed installations (Control D deployment documentation).

Step-by-step: configure one computer or phone
- Create or select a profile. In the Control D dashboard, create a profile for the policy you need or choose an existing one. Start with a narrow rule set if you are troubleshooting a sensitive application; broad category blocks can affect legitimate services.
- Add an endpoint. Create an endpoint in the dashboard and associate it with the profile. The endpoint page supplies resolver addresses and, where supported, encrypted-DNS parameters.
- Open the in-product tutorial. Control D’s supported-platform page directs users to the tutorials inside the panel because operating-system menus and protocol choices change (supported platforms). Select the operating system or browser shown for your device and follow that exact path.
- Enter the DNS setting. Replace the current DNS server with the endpoint’s values. If the tutorial offers DNS-over-HTTPS or DNS-over-TLS, use the operating system’s secure-DNS field; if it gives ordinary resolver addresses, enter them in the network adapter or Wi-Fi configuration as instructed.
- Reconnect and test. Disconnect and reconnect the network, or restart the relevant network service, so the new resolver is used. Visit a few known domains and then open Analytics. New queries tied to the endpoint confirm that the device is using the profile.
- Check the result before adding more rules. If a site fails, inspect the query in Analytics and temporarily allow the specific domain rather than disabling all filtering. If no queries appear, the device is still using another resolver, a VPN, a browser-specific DNS setting, or a router that overrides the device setting.
You do not generally need a resident application for this method. Control D’s software documentation says, In order to setup Control D, in most cases no software is required.
(Control D software documentation).
When an app or daemon is useful
Software remains useful when you want guided onboarding, policy that follows a roaming device, or central deployment. Control D documents a graphical setup utility and the ctrld daemon. The utility can simplify selecting an endpoint and applying settings; the daemon is intended for command-line, router, and managed-installation scenarios (software documentation).
- Use manual DNS settings for a small number of stable devices where the operating system supports the required protocol.
- Use the setup utility when non-technical users need a guided configuration or when you want an easier way to switch profiles.
- Use
ctrldfor repeatable router deployment, scripts, or management through RMM, MDM, or Group Policy.
Installing software does not make every protocol or network scenario compatible. Confirm the operating system, permissions, and whether another VPN or security product controls DNS before deploying it widely.

Whole-home or office deployment through a router
A router endpoint is usually the efficient choice when every device on one network should receive the same policy. Configure the router’s DNS or secure-DNS client once, and clients that obtain DNS settings from that router inherit the resolver. Devices that leave the network will not automatically retain that policy unless they also have a device-level endpoint or managed software.

Preferred route: native encrypted DNS
Control D recommends using a router’s native DNS-over-HTTPS or DNS-over-TLS support when available. This keeps DNS transport encrypted between the router and resolver. The exact labels and fields vary by firmware, so follow the router tutorial generated by your endpoint rather than copying a generic address into an unrelated field.
Alternative route: ctrld
If the router firmware does not offer a suitable secure-DNS client, the documented ctrld approach can run the resolver configuration on compatible router platforms or another always-on device. It is more involved than entering two DNS addresses but can provide a consistent endpoint identity and policy.
Legacy DNS and the static-IP caveat
Control D also documents legacy DNS. Its router guidance warns that this method depends on registering the network’s source IP. It is therefore best suited to a network with a stable public IP; a changing residential address can cause the registered endpoint to stop matching the traffic (router documentation). If your address changes frequently, choose an encrypted method or a supported daemon instead.

Compatibility: platforms and deployment choices
Control D’s supported-platform list includes Windows, Windows Server and Active Directory Controller environments, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, browsers, and routers (supported platforms). Its integrations page lists router and firmware ecosystems including Asus Merlin, DD-WRT, Firewalla, OpenWRT, pfSense, and OPNsense (integrations and trusted partners). A platform appearing on a general list does not guarantee that every model, browser build, or firmware version supports every setup method.
| Where you deploy | Coverage | Advantages | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single device | One computer, phone, tablet, or browser | Fine-grained testing; different profiles can be used on different devices; no router change required. | Must be repeated for each device; policy may disappear when the device joins another network unless the endpoint travels with it. |
| Home or office router | Most clients that receive DNS from that router | One configuration covers the local network and devices without a DNS menu. | Secure DNS is not native on most routers; guest networks, hard-coded DNS, VPNs, and roaming devices may bypass it. |
| Managed fleet | Organization-owned computers and mobile devices | RMM, MDM, Group Policy, or scripts can apply a consistent endpoint and profile. | Requires administrative access, testing, and a plan for off-network devices and conflicting security software. |
| Browser-only | Requests made by a particular browser | Useful for a quick test or a browser that exposes secure-DNS controls. | Other apps and browsers can continue using the operating system or their own resolver. |
Choose the scope before choosing the protocol. A traveling laptop usually needs a device-level configuration; a fixed office with compatible firmware can use a router; and a fleet administrator generally benefits from software or policy deployment.

The pricing page describes both real-time and historical DNS query views. It lists 30 days of raw query-log retention and up to one year of analytics retention (Control D pricing).
Recommended Free Tools
| Data view | Published period | Granularity described | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw query data | 30 days | Individual query records while retained | Investigate a recent block, verify a new endpoint, or identify the domain behind an application failure. |
| Analytics | Up to one year | Hourly for the most recent month; daily over the year, according to the page | Review longer-term patterns without expecting the detail of a raw event record. |
These are the retention figures Control D publishes for the plan page; they are not a promise that every account, future plan, or administrative export has identical behavior. The published material does not establish that logs are anonymous, private from the provider, encrypted at rest, or excluded from other processing. Treat the retention period as a product setting to verify in the current terms and dashboard, not as a complete privacy policy.
Best Value
How to use Analytics during setup
- Make one DNS request from the configured device, such as opening a site you expect to be allowed.
- Open the endpoint’s Analytics view and look for a new query at the current time.
- Repeat with a domain that your profile should block, then check whether the event is marked blocked or redirected.
- If both requests are absent, troubleshoot the resolver path before changing profile rules.
Troubleshooting common failures
No queries appear in Analytics
- Recheck the DNS values character-for-character; an extra space or an old resolver address can leave the device on its previous service.
- Disable or reconfigure a VPN, browser secure-DNS override, or security product that captures DNS.
- Renew the network connection and confirm the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter is the one you edited.
- On a router, verify that DHCP advertises the intended resolver and that clients are not hard-coding another DNS server.
A blocked site still opens
- Confirm the request actually appears in Analytics and is associated with the expected endpoint.
- Check whether the application uses a different hostname, cached data, an IP address, or its own encrypted-DNS channel.
- Flush the device’s DNS cache or restart the application after changing rules.
A legitimate service breaks
- Use the query record to identify the blocked supporting domain, such as a sign-in, telemetry, or content-delivery hostname.
- Add the narrowest allow rule that restores the service, then retest the original block.
- Keep the exception documented; a future profile change or application update may make it unnecessary.
Router setup works briefly, then stops
This commonly indicates a changing public IP when using legacy DNS registration. Move to native encrypted DNS or a supported ctrld deployment, or provide a reliable way for the registered source address to stay current. Do not assume that replacing the router with another model will solve a protocol limitation without checking its firmware documentation.
Security and malware-blocking claims
Control D’s homepage presents a 99.98% malware-block rate attributed to Nexxwave in 2025 (Control D homepage). That is a vendor claim, not an independently verified result established here, and it should not be read as a guarantee that every malicious domain or payload will be blocked. DNS filtering can reduce exposure to known destinations, but it does not replace endpoint protection, browser safeguards, patching, or safe handling of downloaded files.
A practical decision checklist
- Need coverage for one person on several networks? Start with a device endpoint and use the platform tutorial; add the setup utility or
ctrldif roaming or repeatability matters. - Need one policy for a fixed home or office? Check whether the router supports Control D’s native DNS-over-HTTPS or DNS-over-TLS options. If it does not, evaluate a compatible
ctrldmethod. - Need centralized control? Use endpoint-based business pricing and plan deployment through MDM, RMM, Group Policy, or scripts, with separate profiles for different teams or networks.
- Have a dynamic residential IP? Avoid relying on legacy DNS registration unless you have a dependable update mechanism; encrypted DNS or a daemon is safer operationally.
- Need historical reporting? Design investigations around 30 days of raw data and up to a year of lower-resolution analytics, and confirm the current plan’s retention before committing.
For the current supported operating systems, router methods, plan terms, and protocol fields, use Control D’s live documentation and pricing pages rather than an old screenshot or generic DNS guide.
