For US players, the choice comes down to where you play and which extras you will use: Essential covers a smaller catalog and console multiplayer; Premium adds a larger catalog and cloud play, with Xbox-published games arriving within 12 months; Ultimate bundles day-one games and several services; PC Game Pass is built around Windows PC play. Xbox’s advertised library counts and cloud terms can change, so check the current plan details for your region before subscribing.

Choose Essential for basic console access
Essential is aimed at console players who want an included catalog, online console multiplayer, and in-game benefits without prioritizing day-one releases or a large cloud allowance. Xbox lists 50+ games and five monthly cloud hours on its current US pages.
#1 Best Overall
- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
Choose Premium if you can wait for Xbox-published games
Premium makes sense when a larger advertised catalog and cloud play matter more than launch-day access. Xbox says new Xbox-published games join within 12 months of launch; the US overview lists 200+ games, and the Cloud Gaming page displays 10 monthly hours.
Choose Ultimate if you will use its bundle
Ultimate is the broadest advertised bundle: 500+ games, day-one releases, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, and cloud gaming. Its value depends on whether those partner services and cloud features matter to you. Xbox describes Ultimate as having its best cloud streaming quality and shortest waits, including up to 1440p on supported titles and devices, while a separate current Xbox page displays a 15-hour monthly cloud allowance and the comparison page says unlimited cloud gaming. Because these descriptions conflict, check the current plan terms rather than assuming one universal monthly limit.

Choose PC Game Pass for Windows PC play
PC Game Pass is the PC-focused choice if you want day-one releases and EA Play alongside a catalog Xbox lists as 300+ PC games. Xbox’s overview says cloud gaming is not included with this plan; it is not the console-plus-cloud bundle described for Ultimate.

Downloads and cloud streaming are different ways to play
Xbox’s comparison lists console and Windows PC downloads for applicable plans, and cloud streaming on supported phones, tablets, TVs, VR headsets, and browsers. Access depends on the plan, device, and game. Cloud play requires a supported device and compatible controller, so confirm compatibility for the specific setup you intend to use.
