The best Xbox Game Pass alternative depends on what you play and where: PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium is the closest catalog subscription for PS4 and PS5; PC Game Pass is a Windows-only choice; and buying games outright can suit players who want a few specific titles without ongoing subscription access. Compare the games you actually want, the platform and local price, and whether temporary library access or a purchase fits you better.
Which alternative fits your platform?
| Option | Best suited to | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium | PS4 and PS5 players who want access to a rotating game catalog | Tier, local price and subscription term, desired games, and whether Premium features matter |
| PC Game Pass | Windows PC players who want a PC game library without the console bundle | Current local price, PC requirements, desired games, and the plan’s specific benefits |
| Buy games individually | Players focused on a small number of specific titles or continued access to purchases | Current price, platform and edition, likely replay, and physical or digital availability |
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | Players who want a mix of Xbox, PC, and supported-device features and benefits | Current price, which included features you will use, cloud availability and limits, and the exact games and platforms included |
There is no universal winner. Start with the games you want to play, then check their current availability on your platform. A service’s catalog and benefits can vary by plan, platform, region, and time; confirm the details on the Xbox plan comparison page or the relevant PlayStation Plus catalog.

PlayStation Plus: the catalog option for PS4 and PS5
PlayStation Plus has Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog; Premium adds Classics and game trials. The catalog changes over time, and its contents depend on tier and region. Sony also says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026, so a regular stream of new PS4 catalog additions is not guaranteed. Check the PlayStation Plus overview for current tier details and terms.

Sony says price depends on tier and subscription term, so compare the live price for your region and the term you would actually choose rather than relying on a single general price.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
PC Game Pass: a distinct plan for Windows players
PC Game Pass is designed around a PC library rather than the broader console-and-supported-device bundle. The current US Xbox store listing shows $13.99 per month and describes 300+ PC games, day-one titles, and EA Play. Those are dated US listing details, not a guarantee of the same price, catalog, or benefits in every market. Check the Xbox store listing and the PC Game Pass page for current availability and requirements.
Choose it if the PC titles you want are included and you do not need console features. If you play on both Xbox and PC, compare the separate plan benefits rather than assuming a PC subscription includes Ultimate’s console or cloud features.

Buying games: pay for particular titles, not a catalog
Buying a game individually can make sense when you already know which few titles you want, expect to replay them, or value access to the purchase without depending on an active catalog subscription. Check the exact title, platform, edition, current price, and whether a physical or digital version is available; ownership and access conditions can differ by format and platform.
A subscription can provide access to many games while it is active, but that access is temporary. Xbox says Game Pass access lasts until the subscription ends or the game leaves the library. Xbox also advertises discounts on select games in its library, which may help if you decide to buy a title instead. Review the PC Game Pass terms and check the specific game’s current listing before deciding.

How to compare the real cost
- Make a short list of games. Include only titles you expect to play during the period you are comparing.
- Check platform and current availability. Confirm each game’s platform and whether it is in the relevant catalog now; do not treat an announced catalog lineup as permanent.
- Look up local prices and subscription terms. Xbox’s current US store listing shows Ultimate at $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month. Those are current US listing prices, not universal prices. Sony prices PS Plus by tier and term. Check live local listings before calculating.
- Account for features you would use. Consider cloud streaming, multiplayer, day-one access, trials, classics, or bundled services only if they matter to you and are included in your plan and region.
- Compare against purchases you would actually make. Use the current price of the specific editions you want, not a general claim that subscriptions are always cheaper. No single savings figure applies to every player.
Why catalog checks need a date
Game libraries change, and availability can differ by plan and platform. For example, Xbox’s September 15, 2026 update listed additions, their plan and platform availability, and games leaving on September 30. That snapshot illustrates why a title’s presence should be verified before subscribing; consult the September 2026 Xbox catalog update for that dated announcement and the live catalog for current options.
