Yes, eligible Xbox discs can grant a digital entitlement—but it is not a free-standing digital copy. Microsoft conditions that entitlement on your continued possession of the qualifying disc. A game bought digitally is tied instead to your Microsoft account and, under Xbox’s rules, a device license on your designated Home console. Neither route guarantees that every game works on every Xbox or supports cloud and cross-device play.
What Xbox disc-to-digital actually does
Xbox announced the feature on August 26, 2026. To claim an entitlement, insert a supported game disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but not every title qualifies, and availability can change. See Xbox Wire’s feature announcement for the claim flow and current details.

This is an entitlement tied to a qualifying disc, not a blanket conversion of your physical library into digital licenses. Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules say the limited digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may revalidate eligibility and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess it. The license cannot be transferred separately from the disc.

| Question | Disc-to-digital entitlement | Direct digital purchase |
|---|---|---|
| How you get access | Insert and launch a supported disc on a disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X. | Buy or redeem the digital game through an authorized digital route. |
| What the license depends on | Your continued possession of the qualifying disc, as well as the applicable Xbox digital-game rules. | Your Microsoft account license and a device license on your designated Home console. Microsoft explains these rules in its digital goods usage rules. |
| Disc drive needed? | Yes, for the claim step; you also need to keep the qualifying disc. | No game disc or disc drive is needed to download and play the digital title. |
| Does every game qualify? | No. Eligibility is title-specific and may change. | Availability depends on the title’s digital store and platform availability. |
| Sharing and play away from Home | General Xbox digital-game sharing and sign-in rules apply, plus the qualifying-disc condition. | The Home console can use its device license. To use your account’s roaming license elsewhere, you must be signed in; the same user cannot play on two consoles at once. |
| Other devices and services | Play Anywhere and cloud benefits apply only where supported for that title. | Play Anywhere applies only to participating games; cloud access depends on title and service support. |
Microsoft describes the account and device license model in its Xbox product-sharing documentation. The disc-to-digital entitlement adds a condition that a direct digital purchase does not: continued possession of the qualifying disc.

Can you sell the disc after claiming the digital version?
Do not sell or give away the qualifying disc if you are relying on the claimed entitlement. Microsoft says continued possession is required and that access may be suspended or revoked if possession ends. The rules do not spell out every loan, resale, or account scenario, so they should not be read as a guarantee that a transferred disc will leave the prior owner’s digital access intact.
Can you use a disc to play on Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is all-digital and does not play disc-based games; it cannot perform the disc insertion step required to claim this entitlement. Xbox confirms this on its Series S product page. If you own a qualifying disc and want to claim the entitlement for use on a Series S, you need access to a supported disc-reading Xbox One or Xbox Series X for the claim step. Check the specific title’s eligibility before relying on that route.

Will the entitlement work with Xbox Play Anywhere or cloud gaming?
Only where the individual game supports the relevant feature. Xbox says claimed entitlements can bring Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming benefits where supported; that does not make either benefit universal. Microsoft likewise limits Play Anywhere to participating games. Check the game’s listing and feature support before assuming you can play on another device or stream it. See Xbox Play Anywhere for the participating-title program.
Which route makes sense for your situation?
- You already own a qualifying disc and have a disc-reading Xbox: Check the current claim flow for that specific title. If it qualifies, you can claim the entitlement, but keep the disc while you rely on access.
- You have only an Xbox Series S: The console cannot read the disc. You would need access to a supported disc-reading Xbox One or Series X to perform the claim step, or obtain the digital game through an available digital route.
- You want to sell, trade, or give away the disc: A disc-to-digital entitlement is a poor fit because access remains conditioned on possessing that disc.
- You want account-based access without a qualifying disc: A direct digital purchase avoids the added disc-possession condition, though it remains subject to Microsoft’s account and Home-console license rules.
- You are counting on another device or cloud play: Verify support for the particular title; neither route guarantees those benefits for every game.
Xbox does not publish a stable, complete eligibility catalog in the announcement, and Microsoft reserves the ability to add or remove disc eligibility for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons. Treat the claim flow or current Xbox support information as the check for your specific disc rather than assuming a whole series or collection qualifies.
