If Google Home or Nest devices keep dropping offline, first find out whether the problem is your internet connection, Wi-Fi coverage across the home, or one device. Check other devices, recent network changes, signal and placement before buying equipment or resetting individual products.
First, find out whether the outage affects one device or the whole home
Use a phone or computer connected to Wi-Fi to open a website. On a phone, temporarily turn off cellular data so a mobile connection cannot hide a broken home internet connection. Check whether other Nest devices are also offline.

- Several Nest devices are offline: Check that the devices and network equipment have power, check your internet service and provider status, and restart the router.
- Other devices have internet, but one Nest device is offline: Focus on that product’s connection, location, app and model-specific requirements.
- Other devices also cannot reach the internet: The problem may be the router, modem or internet provider rather than Google Home. Restart network equipment as directed by its manufacturer; contact your ISP if the connection remains down.
Google says Nest products periodically try to reconnect automatically. That does not replace checking whether the home network itself is working. Google’s guide to Wi-Fi and connection issues for Nest products covers the initial checks.

- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
- Confirm the new Wi-Fi network works on another device.
- Open the relevant Google Home or Nest app and follow its instructions to connect the affected product to the new network. Check for app updates and note any error message shown.
- For pairing, connect the phone running the app to the same Wi-Fi network you want the device to join. On applicable iOS versions, allow Google Home local-network access.
- If pairing fails, restart the app and phone, then restart the assisting device and network equipment as the applicable setup guidance directs.
See Google’s instructions for connecting Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network and its pairing troubleshooting steps.
Improve Wi-Fi signal and mesh coverage
Distance, walls, floors, furniture and appliances can weaken a connection. As a quick diagnostic, move the affected device nearer to the router or mesh point and check whether it stays online. If that helps, work on placement and coverage rather than treating the symptom as an app problem.

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Place the router and mesh points where they can communicate
- Put the router and mesh points in open locations, away from dense barriers where practical.
- Run the mesh test in Google Home to identify a weak link.
- If a point has a weak connection, move it closer to the primary point and place it between that point and the area with poor coverage.
- Do not put a point deep inside a dead zone: it needs a usable connection to the primary point to extend coverage.
Follow Google’s mesh test guide and its guidance for slow internet on Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi.
Check the thermostat’s signal indicators when available
For a Nest thermostat, Google’s troubleshooting guidance treats a displayed signal strength below 50 or ping above 1000 as reasons to investigate interference. These are device-specific indicators from Google’s thermostat guidance, not universal Wi-Fi thresholds. See Google’s Nest thermostat offline troubleshooting guide.

Check interference and router settings for the specific device
Nearby Wi-Fi networks can compete for airtime, while microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, Bluetooth devices and wireless video equipment may interfere with wireless connections. Temporarily switch off a likely nearby source and check whether the affected device becomes more reliable. Test one change at a time so you can identify what matters.
Router settings are not interchangeable across Nest products. Check the instructions for the exact model before changing band, security or network options.

Nest thermostat considerations
Google’s thermostat guidance identifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, compatibility with 802.11 b/g/n in some setup scenarios, a DHCP lease time of at least two hours, and Power Save Mode as settings to investigate when troubleshooting. These are checks for the relevant thermostat situations, not requirements to apply indiscriminately to every smart-home device. See Google’s thermostat Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting.
Nest Protect considerations
Nest Protect cannot connect to a 5 GHz network. Google also identifies multicast and wireless-isolation settings as possible factors in Nest Protect communication. Consult Google’s Nest Protect offline troubleshooting before adjusting your router.

Restart the network in the right order, then verify the fix
If several Nest products are offline or the network needs a restart, use the applicable product guidance. For a setup with a modem, router and Google Wifi or Nest Wifi points, Google’s restart sequence is to restart the modem first and wait for it to finish, then power the router or primary point, followed by additional points.
- Restart the modem, if you have one, and wait until it has finished starting.
- Restart the router or primary point.
- Restart additional mesh points.
- Reopen Google Home and run the mesh test.
- Check whether the device that originally dropped offline has reconnected and remains usable.
If other devices still cannot access the internet, contact your ISP. If they can, but one Nest device remains offline, continue with that model’s troubleshooting steps or contact Google support. Google’s connection guide covers multiple-device outages; its new-network instructions describe reconnecting after network changes.
Should you buy a Wi-Fi extender or add a mesh point?
Consider extra coverage equipment only after checking internet service, router placement and signal. Google suggests trying a Wi-Fi range extender when a Nest thermostat has weak signal, but that does not mean an extender will fix an ISP outage, interference or a router-setting problem.

Before choosing equipment, check whether it supports the band and standards your device needs, whether it works with your existing router or mesh setup, and how obstacles separate it from the device and access point. A mesh point and a range extender are not necessarily interchangeable. Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot join a mesh with Nest Wifi or Google Wifi points; see Google’s Nest Wifi Pro and Nest Wifi setup guidance. Test placement and confirm coverage improves before deciding the additional equipment solved the problem.
