How the licenses and discs differ
A disc is a physical game medium. To play a disc-based game, you need the disc and a compatible disc-reading console. The disc can be handed to someone else, but access goes with it: you cannot keep using disc-based access after giving the disc away.

A digital Xbox One or Xbox Series game uses two licenses under Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules: a user license associated with the purchaser’s Microsoft account and a device license associated with that account’s designated Home Xbox. These are licenses to use the game, not a freely transferable copy. Microsoft’s rules generally prohibit transferring or reselling digital licenses except where expressly permitted.

Sharing a disc
To share a disc, lend the physical item. The person playing needs the qualifying disc and compatible hardware. The disc-to-digital feature does not turn the resulting digital entitlement into a separately transferable license.

Sharing a digital game on your Home Xbox
Other accounts using your designated Home Xbox can access games covered by its device license without the purchaser staying signed in. Microsoft’s Xbox sharing documentation describes this as Home-console sharing.
Microsoft’s current rules allow the Home Xbox designation to be changed up to five times during a rolling one-year period. That limit makes the setting useful for a household console, but not a frictionless way to pass a digital library among multiple consoles.

Using a digital game on another Xbox
The purchaser can use their account to roam to another Xbox. On a non-Home console, access for other accounts depends on the purchaser being signed in and connected to Xbox services; Microsoft’s developer documentation says those accounts lose roaming access when the purchaser signs out. The digital game is generally playable on one console at a time, with the Home-console sharing exception described in Microsoft’s rules.

Resale and the disc-to-digital feature
Physical discs can be transferred
A disc can be lent or resold because the physical item itself can be transferred. If you have claimed a disc-to-digital entitlement, however, Microsoft conditions access on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Selling or giving it away means you should not expect to keep the entitlement: Microsoft may require eligibility to be revalidated and may suspend or revoke access if you no longer have the disc.

Digital purchases are not resalable copies
A standard digital purchase is tied to the account and Home Xbox licenses, and Microsoft’s rules do not treat it as a transferable copy that the purchaser can resell. Access can also depend on Microsoft’s distribution rights for the digital good.
What disc-to-digital does
In an announcement dated August 26, 2026, Xbox said players can insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. Xbox described the initial selection as “thousands of titles,” with more to be added; that is not an exact count or a guarantee that a particular game qualifies. Microsoft’s rules say eligibility may change, and the limited digital license cannot be transferred separately from the qualifying disc.

The feature does not eliminate the disc’s role: Xbox says the physical disc continues to work as before, and Microsoft conditions the claimed digital access on continued possession of that disc. Xbox also says digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming apply only where supported. Check the title’s current eligibility through Xbox guidance or on your console; no verified universal eligibility list is provided in the cited official material. Check compatibility before choosing a format
- Confirm the console model. Disc-based play requires a disc-reading console. Xbox’s feature announcement names supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, but that does not establish support for every model or game.
- Check game-specific hardware. A disc-to-digital entitlement does not provide peripherals a game may require.
- Verify the exact title’s eligibility. Microsoft says disc eligibility can vary and may be added or removed for technical, publishing, or licensing reasons.
- Compare live prices if cost matters. Used-disc and digital prices vary by title, edition, retailer, region, and date; no stable price comparison is established here.
