Choose an Xbox console if you mainly play at home on a television and want the simplest, most appliance-like experience. Choose a handheld gaming PC such as the ROG Xbox Ally if portable play, Windows applications, multiple PC storefronts, and mod support matter more than plug-and-play convenience. Neither category is universally better. The right choice depends on where you play, which version of your game library you own, whether you need Windows, and the exact model and price available in your region.
This comparison uses the Xbox Series S and Series X family on the console side and the ROG Xbox Ally family on the handheld side. Prices and availability change, and the cited sources do not provide a controlled performance benchmark, representative battery-life test, or complete game-by-game compatibility list.

The short answer
An Xbox console is the better fit for a living-room player who wants to connect one box to a TV, use a traditional controller, and avoid managing a Windows desktop. A handheld gaming PC is the better fit when you want to play away from home, use the built-in screen and controls, install Windows applications, access more than one PC game storefront, or use mods.
The trade-off is straightforward: the console gives you a fixed, console-oriented environment, while the handheld gives you PC flexibility in a smaller, battery-powered device. The handheld can connect to an external display with suitable accessories, but that does not make it a replacement for the console’s dedicated living-room design. Conversely, an Xbox console can support cloud and remote play, but it is not an integrated portable PC.

What counts as an Xbox console and what counts as the handheld PC?
There is no single Xbox console specification or price. Microsoft’s U.S. Store lists several Series S and Series X configurations. The handheld comparison is also a family rather than one device: Xbox lists ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, and ROG Xbox Ally X20 models.
Xbox console configurations
The Microsoft Store Xbox console page showed these U.S. listing prices when accessed:
| Family or configuration | Storage and format | Displayed U.S. listing price |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | 512GB; the refurbished listing describes Series S as digital-only | $499.99 |
| Xbox Series S | 1TB | $599.99 |
| Xbox Series X | Digital 1TB and other Series X configurations are listed | $749.99 or $799.99, depending on the listed configuration |
These are a time-specific U.S. store snapshot, not a permanent worldwide MSRP. Taxes, promotions, regional currency, stock, and retailer pricing can change. Check the exact SKU before buying.
ROG Xbox Ally configurations
The official Xbox ROG Xbox Ally page identifies the following hardware:
| Model | Operating system | Processor | Display | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally | Windows 11 Home | AMD Ryzen Z2 A | 7-inch, 1920×1080, 120Hz variable refresh rate | 16GB LPDDR5-6400 | 512GB SSD |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | Windows 11 Home | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme | 7-inch, 1920×1080 class, 120Hz | 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 | 1TB SSD |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 | Windows 11 Home | The cited Xbox specification page does not identify a processor | 7.4-inch OLED, 1080p, 120Hz | The cited Xbox specification page does not identify memory | 1TB |
The model names, specifications, and accessories can vary by market. Xbox directs shoppers to retailers for handheld availability, so confirm the local model number rather than assuming that every region sells every configuration.
Where each device makes the most sense
Mostly playing on a television
Pick an Xbox console when most sessions happen in one room. It is designed to remain connected to a television, with a conventional controller and a console user interface. You do not need to arrange a portable power or display setup, and the hardware target is fixed for game developers.
A handheld can be connected to an external screen with the right accessories, but that adds a dock, cable, power, and controller considerations. If the external-screen setup will be your normal arrangement, the handheld’s portability advantage may be paying for a feature you rarely use.

Playing away from home
The integrated display and controls make the ROG Xbox Ally family the natural choice for travel, commuting, or playing in rooms without a television. The 7-inch 1080p 120Hz screens on the base Ally and Ally X, and the 7.4-inch 1080p OLED screen on X20, are part of the device rather than separate equipment.
Do not treat a refresh-rate number as a promise of a particular frame rate. The cited sources do not provide same-game benchmarks between any Ally model and an Xbox console. Battery runtime also varies with the game, brightness, performance mode, frame-rate target, and other settings; no representative runtime is established by these sources.
Windows software, storefronts, and mods
The Ally is a Windows 11 Home PC with built-in controls. ASUS describes Windows, Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play features on its ROG Ally product pages. A Windows handheld can run applications such as a browser or Discord and can access PC game stores beyond a single console storefront, subject to each game’s launcher and compatibility requirements.
In a Windows Experience Blog announcement, Xbox gaming-devices executive Roanne Sones wrote that the devices provide access to games from different storefronts, apps such as Discord, Twitch viewing, and mods. That is a vendor description of intended platform capability, not an independent test that every title, launcher, anti-cheat system, or mod works perfectly on every model.

An Xbox console is the safer choice if you want to turn on a television, select a game, and avoid desktop-style maintenance. A Windows handheld can still present an Xbox-oriented game library, but underneath it remains a PC. Windows updates, launcher sign-ins, graphics settings, controller mappings, storage management, and occasional compatibility problems are part of the ownership experience.
Game access: four routes that are easy to confuse
The phrase “play Xbox games on a handheld” can describe different technologies. Identify the route before buying.
| Route | What runs the game? | What you need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Native Windows PC version | The handheld runs the PC edition locally | Windows support, launcher, controller behavior, graphics requirements, storage, and any anti-cheat restrictions |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Microsoft’s servers stream the game to the handheld | ASUS states that Cloud Gaming requires a Game Pass membership; streaming quality depends on the network path |
| Xbox Remote Play | Your own Xbox console runs the installed game and streams it to the handheld | ASUS states that Remote Play streams games installed on an Xbox console; the console must contain the game and be configured for remote access |
| Local Xbox console play | The Xbox Series S or Series X runs the console edition on a television | Whether the game is available for the console, the edition you own, and the console’s storage capacity |
Cloud Gaming and Remote Play are not interchangeable. Cloud Gaming uses a service’s remote hardware and requires the membership identified by ASUS. Remote Play uses an Xbox console you own and streams a game installed there. A Windows PC version is a separate purchase or entitlement path from a console version unless the game’s licensing program includes both.

Hardware differences that affect the decision
Processor and memory
The base Ally uses a Ryzen Z2 A processor and 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 memory. Ally X moves to Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, and a 1TB SSD. Those are meaningful specification differences inside the handheld family, but processor branding alone does not establish console-equivalent performance. No controlled, same-game comparison is supplied for these handhelds versus Series S or Series X.
Recommended Free Tools
Series S and Series X are fixed console platforms. Developers target those specific hardware profiles, while a Windows handheld may expose settings intended for a wider range of PCs. That can provide flexibility, but it also means you may need to choose a resolution, frame-rate cap, or quality preset for each demanding game.
Display and controls
The base Ally and Ally X list 7-inch 1920×1080-class 120Hz variable-refresh displays. The X20 lists a larger 7.4-inch 1080p OLED panel at 120Hz. The console itself has no built-in screen; your television or monitor determines display size, panel type, and refresh capability.
For a couch player, a large television can be the more important visual feature than a handheld’s high-refresh screen. For a traveler, the handheld display and integrated controls eliminate the need to carry a separate monitor and controller.
Storage
The base Ally and the 512GB Series S listing both start at 512GB, while Ally X and X20 list 1TB storage. Installed games, updates, downloadable content, and Windows itself consume space, so the usable capacity is lower than the headline number. Series S is digital-only in the refurbished description cited by Microsoft, making internal storage and expansion planning especially important for a large digital library.

Price, availability, and the cost of choosing the wrong version
The console prices above are U.S. listings captured from Microsoft’s store at one point in time. They can change without notice and do not include a universal statement about other countries. The cited Xbox handheld page does not provide a single worldwide retail price for the Ally family and directs buyers to retailers, so compare the exact local SKU, tax treatment, warranty, and stock.

Compare like with like. A lower-priced Series S may be attractive if you already have a television and only need console play. A higher-capacity Series X or a more expensive Ally X may make sense if storage, performance headroom, or memory capacity matters to your library. Do not assume that the cheapest device is the lowest-cost setup: a handheld used primarily at a desk may require a display, dock, keyboard, mouse, and additional storage, while a console may require a separate portable device if you later decide you need gaming away from home.

| Your priority | Likely better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most sessions are on a television at home | Xbox console | It is a dedicated living-room device; the handheld’s built-in screen is less valuable when it stays docked. |

Choose the console when these statements are true
- Your television is where you play most often.
- You prefer a controller-first interface over Windows desktop controls.
- Your library is primarily console editions rather than PC storefront purchases.
- You do not want to troubleshoot launchers, graphics settings, or mod installations.
- You value a fixed hardware target more than portability.
Choose the handheld when these statements are true
- You will regularly play in places without a television.
- You already own PC games or need more than one PC storefront.
- You want Windows applications, browser access, Discord, or mods on the same device.
- You accept that some games may need per-title settings or compatibility checks.
- You are willing to manage battery, storage, updates, and Windows-style peripherals.
Buying and setup checklist
Before buying an Xbox console
- Identify the family and capacity. Decide between the Series S listings and the Series X configurations rather than shopping by the word “Xbox” alone.
- Confirm the edition of each important game. Check whether you need a console release, a PC release, or a cross-entitlement version.
- Measure your storage needs. A 512GB listing and a 1TB listing will not provide the same room for a large digital library after system files and updates.
- Check the current regional listing. Verify price, tax, warranty, stock, and whether the seller is offering the exact model shown on Microsoft’s store.
- Plan the display and network connection. Make sure the television has the inputs and features you expect, and that your home network can support downloads and any streaming features you intend to use.
Before buying an ROG Xbox Ally
- Choose the model deliberately. Compare the base Ally’s Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB memory, and 512GB SSD with Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB memory, and 1TB SSD. Consider X20 if its 7.4-inch OLED display and 1TB storage match your priorities.
- Verify the regional SKU and price. Use the retailer links reached from Xbox’s handheld page and confirm the exact processor, memory, storage, keyboard layout, warranty, and included accessories.
- Map your game library. Mark each essential game as native Windows PC, Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, or console-only for your intended use.
- Budget for storage and protection. Xbox lists microSD cards and an Ally case, but compatibility should be checked for the specific model before purchase.
- Expect PC setup. Allow time for Windows updates, account sign-ins, launcher installation, controller checks, and graphics configuration.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Xbox game is a native handheld game
An Xbox-branded handheld does not turn every console title into a locally installed Windows game. Check the game’s platform and licensing route. If it is not a Windows title, determine whether Cloud Gaming or Remote Play is available and whether those options fit your connection and subscription.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsing screen refresh rate as a performance guarantee
A 120Hz panel can refresh up to that rate, but the game and hardware must produce suitable frames. The available sources list display specifications, not frame-rate results. Treat 120Hz as a display capability, not a benchmark.
Comparing prices without matching storage and model
A 512GB Series S, a 1TB Series S, a Series X configuration, and the three Ally models are not equivalent packages. Match storage, processor, memory, display, accessories, warranty, tax, and region before deciding that one headline price is cheaper.
Expecting console simplicity from Windows
Windows enables storefronts, applications, and mods, but it also introduces PC decisions. Keep recovery credentials available, update Windows and launchers, and check controller support before assuming a game will behave like a console edition.
Confusing Remote Play with Cloud Gaming
Remote Play streams a game installed on your own Xbox console. Cloud Gaming requires the Game Pass membership identified by ASUS and uses cloud servers. Choose the route that matches the games and hardware you actually have.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How to make the final choice
Start with location rather than specifications. If at least three-quarters of your play is on a television and you do not need Windows software, begin with the Xbox console listings. If portability is a recurring requirement, begin with the Ally family and then verify your must-play games one by one.
Next, separate ownership from access. A PC version, a console version, Cloud Gaming entitlement, and Remote Play are different paths. Write down which path each important game uses before spending money.
Finally, compare the exact local offers on the day you buy. Microsoft’s displayed U.S. prices and the Ally specifications are useful reference points, but they do not establish your region’s final price or stock. A decision based on the wrong storage tier or an unavailable SKU can erase the advantage of choosing the “right” category.
