What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You do not need a gaming PC to stream Xbox games to a computer. Xbox Cloud Gaming runs games on Microsoft’s servers, so your key requirements are a supported PC and browser or Xbox app, a reliable internet connection, an eligible account and game, and usually a compatible controller. The Xbox PC app’s minimum specifications are app requirements—not a promise of streaming quality or specifications for running downloaded games locally.
What you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PC
- A supported Windows PC and either a supported browser or the Xbox app.
- An internet connection: Microsoft gives 10 Mbps as a minimum download speed and recommends 20 Mbps for best performance on PCs and tablets.
- An eligible subscription and a cloud-playable game, unless you are playing a select free-to-play title with a free Microsoft account.
- A compatible controller connected by Bluetooth or USB for most console games. Select games support touch controls.
These are Microsoft’s current requirements and guidance, checked October 7, 2026. Availability and account entitlements can change; check Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ and live game library before playing.

Choose a browser or the Xbox PC app
| Access route | Microsoft’s stated platform details | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser | Visit xbox.com/play in a supported browser. Microsoft lists Edge, Chrome, and Safari as examples. | Supported browser, device and region; eligible account and game; internet connection. |
| Xbox PC app | Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of storage, and a 720p display. | App requirements, Windows S mode, supported device and region; eligible account and game; internet connection. |
Microsoft’s Xbox PC app listing gives those Windows, storage, and display figures as the app’s minimum requirements. It does not establish a CPU, GPU, or RAM minimum for browser-based cloud streaming. Nor should the app baseline be treated as the hardware needed to download and run a PC game: locally installed games have their own system requirements.

- Open Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or another supported browser.
- Go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the game, then select a cloud-playable title.
Xbox app setup
- Check that your PC runs Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or higher, and has at least 150 MB of storage and a 720p display.
- Open or install the Xbox PC app and sign in with the account that has access to the game.
- If the app route does not work because the PC is in Windows S mode, Microsoft says switching out of S mode may be required.
- Choose a game that is available for cloud play. Do not assume every PC game in the app can be streamed.
Internet speed and connection quality
Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming FAQ states a 10 Mbps minimum download speed for a Wi-Fi or LTE connection. It says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality, recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and identifies 20 Mbps as the best-performance guidance for PCs and tablets. These are Microsoft’s recommendations, not guarantees of smooth or lag-free play.

Streaming quality also depends on factors including your connection, location, and device. A connection that meets the speed guidance can still perform poorly if it is unstable or has high latency. Use a stable connection where possible, and try 5 GHz Wi-Fi if your router and PC support it. Internet service fees may apply. Microsoft also notes that streamed games can have limitations involving video resolution, audio outputs, and cloud-save storage.
Controller, subscription, and game availability
Controller
For console games streamed to a PC, Microsoft generally requires a compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB. Select games offer touch controls, so check the individual game if you do not have a controller. Microsoft does not require one particular controller model.

Subscription and account
Microsoft’s current FAQ lists Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate as eligible subscriptions for cloud gaming. It also says select free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Cloud playtime limits vary by plan, so check the current plan terms rather than relying on a fixed allowance.

Region and game
Cloud gaming depends on supported regions and devices, and not every title is available to stream. Microsoft says select free-to-play titles and most games in the Xbox Game Pass library are available through cloud gaming; select cloud-playable games a user owns or buys may also be streamable. The catalog and availability can change by region, plan, platform, and time. Check the live Xbox Cloud Gaming library and supported-region information for your location.

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming require a powerful gaming PC?
Microsoft’s cited requirements do not specify a dedicated graphics card or minimum CPU or RAM for browser-based cloud play. That is consistent with streaming: the game is processed remotely rather than rendered locally as a downloaded PC game. Your computer still needs to run the supported browser or app and display the stream, while your network carries it reliably. The Xbox app listing warns that requirements vary by game, so its modest app baseline should not be mistaken for the requirements of locally installed games or a guarantee of ideal stream performance.
