Which TVs and Fire TV devices are supported?
Smart TVs
Xbox lists support for selected Samsung, LG, and VIDAA TVs, not every model from those brands. Its 2026 announcement says the Xbox app rolled out to supported VIDAA OS TVs, including selected Hisense models running VIDAA OS 9.6 or later. Confirm the exact model, software version, region, and app-store availability on the Xbox TV compatibility page and the relevant manufacturer’s support information before relying on a TV app.
Fire TV
Xbox’s compatibility list names the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st and 2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen), and Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen). That does not mean every Fire TV Stick or Cube is supported. Check the precise model and generation on the same Xbox compatibility page before buying.

Older Samsung TVs need extra checking
Windows Central reported that support for the Xbox app on 2020 Samsung smart TVs is scheduled to end on November 3, 2026, while newer Samsung TVs continue to be supported. The Xbox compatibility page has also been described as listing selected 2020-and-newer Samsung devices, so the information is not fully reconciled. What does each setup require?
A controller that works with your device
Plan on using a compatible controller with either route. Xbox’s announcement for the LG app names Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, PlayStation DualSense, and DualShock 4 as examples. Those examples are not a guarantee that every TV or Fire TV device supports every controller or connection method; check the compatibility details for your exact platform. An eligible Game Pass entitlement
Cloud gaming is included with most Game Pass plans, but the eligible plan, catalog, and availability can vary by country, plan, device, and time. Check the current terms for your region in Xbox’s cloud gaming getting-started guide and the VIDAA announcement; do not assume that any Game Pass subscription includes the same cloud access everywhere.
A reliable network
Microsoft says streaming performance can depend on your internet connection, location, device, and other factors. The available sources do not establish a controlled, head-to-head performance winner between a TV app and a Fire TV device, so do not choose either on a promise of lower latency, sharper images, or greater reliability.

How to choose for your living room
- Choose the TV app if your exact TV is currently supported and you already have a compatible controller. It avoids adding and configuring another device.
- Consider a supported Fire TV device if your TV has HDMI but no usable Xbox app. Confirm the exact Fire TV generation first.
- Compare what you already own before spending: include the streaming device and controller if you need them, and check subscription eligibility separately for your country.
- Verify older Samsung support directly if you have a 2020 model, because the reported retirement date and the broader Xbox compatibility listing do not align clearly.
Bottom line: convenience matters more than an unproven speed advantage
A supported TV app is the easiest option when it is already available on your television. A specifically supported Fire TV Stick or Cube is a practical alternative for an HDMI TV without the app. Model support and what you already own are the decisive factors; the available evidence does not show that one route is always faster or looks better.
