What did the Xbox CEO say?
In a New York Times interview, as reported by Game Developer and VGC, Sharma said: “Xbox is not for sale. We will do whatever it takes to set the company up for success, and we will look at the right partnerships, the right operating model, and everything needed to achieve that.” She also said, “We’ve got a long way to go with Microsoft, and we’re going to take the long-term view.”
The remarks answer whether Xbox is being sold now: Sharma says it is not. They are not a guarantee that Microsoft will never change Xbox’s structure, nor do they establish that a sale or spin-off is planned.
Why did sale and spin-off speculation emerge?
A June 2026 report by The Information, described in the later coverage, said Microsoft had not made an immediate decision to spin off Xbox but had not ruled out possibilities including a spin-off, a wholly owned subsidiary, or a joint venture. Those were reported scenarios, not an announcement of adopted plans or evidence of a transaction process. Sharma’s September statement is the clearest direct public response in the reporting cited here.

The options are materially different: a spin-off would separate ownership from Microsoft; a wholly owned subsidiary could change Xbox’s legal structure while leaving it under Microsoft ownership; and a joint venture would involve shared control with another party. None is confirmed as a current plan.
What is Microsoft changing as part of the restructuring?
In a September 22, 2026 employee message, Microsoft gaming executive Matt Booty said the company was eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and central functions. Microsoft also said actions completed since July, including studio divestitures, brought it roughly three-quarters of the way through its previously announced restructuring. Both figures are company-reported; the progress figure is approximate, not an independently verified exact percentage.

Microsoft described the restructuring as an effort to strengthen franchises and games by operating fewer business units, aligning groups that already worked closely, and focusing publishing expertise. The September update described these reporting and studio changes:
- Activision would expand its remit to include World’s Edge and develop the next Halo title.
- Bethesda would include Obsidian.
- King would include Microsoft Casual Games.
- Playground and Turn 10 would come together as one studio focused on Forza and Fable.
These are the changes Microsoft described in its September 22 plan, not guarantees about later implementation. In the same update, Booty wrote: “The actions completed since July, inclusive of the studio divestitures, bring us roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced restructuring.”

Does restructuring mean Microsoft intends to sell Xbox?
No such conclusion is established by the available statements. Microsoft’s update documents role reductions and organizational consolidation; Sharma’s later comment explicitly says Xbox is not for sale while leaving room for partnerships and a different operating model. Restructuring can therefore continue without implying a sale, and the sale denial does not mean the organization is frozen.
The reporting supports neither a claim that a spin-off is imminent nor a promise that Microsoft will never sell or separate Xbox. Ownership intentions and restructuring progress can change, so the statements describe the positions reported in September 2026.
