Progress Software announced three additions to its Agentic RAG platform on October 1, 2026: a Microsoft Teams app, a multistep Smart Agent for retrieval, and a WordPress plugin for content ingestion. Progress says the features are available to existing customers using their current indexed content and access controls, without reindexing or rebuilding pipelines. The announcement describes product capabilities, not independently verified performance or security results.
What Progress announced
The release extends the platform across three parts of an AI knowledge workflow: where people receive answers, how questions are researched, and how website content enters the knowledge base. Progress’s October 1 announcement says the features are available.
- Microsoft Teams app: brings source-cited AI interactions into Teams chats and channels, according to Progress.
- Smart Agent: plans and conducts multistep retrieval across indexed and live sources.
- WordPress plugin: gives administrators controls for indexing and refreshing site content.
Progress says current customers can use the additions with existing indexed content and access controls, without reindexing, rebuilding pipelines, or changing their architecture.
How the Smart Agent retrieval works
Progress describes the Smart Agent as a query-time researcher rather than a single-pass retriever. It plans a query, breaks it into sub-questions, selects sources, retrieves information, and evaluates what it finds until it judges the gathered material sufficient. The sources it may use include content in a Knowledge Box, applications connected through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and web sources.

This combines two retrieval paths: content ingested in advance into a governed, continuously synchronized Knowledge Box, and live access to business systems or web sources through MCP. Progress presents them as complementary, so an agent can draw on maintained enterprise content as well as information it retrieves at question time.
Progress contrasts this with conventional RAG, which it characterizes as a fixed retrieve-then-generate pipeline. In its product FAQ, the company says Agentic RAG dynamically analyzes a question, creates sub-questions, chooses sources, and refines retrieval. That is Progress’s description of the distinction; the announcement does not provide an independent comparison or benchmark.

What each addition means for an organization
Answers in Microsoft Teams
The Teams app is the delivery surface: Progress says users can receive AI answers with source citations in chats and channels, while existing permissions and governance controls remain in place. This may fit organizations that want knowledge access inside a collaboration tool rather than a separate search interface. The announcement does not independently validate permission enforcement or citation accuracy.
More structured WordPress ingestion
The plugin is aimed at organizations whose knowledge includes WordPress sites. Progress says administrators can control indexing and refresh behavior, while the plugin preserves structure, metadata, and taxonomy information. Those attributes can provide context for retrieval, but the stated retrieval and governance benefits are vendor claims rather than independently measured outcomes.

Less bespoke source routing, according to Progress
Progress says Smart Agent query planning can reduce custom orchestration and source-routing work. No measurement of engineering effort, answer quality, latency, or cost accompanies the announcement, so buyers should treat this as a product claim rather than a quantified saving.
Agentic RAG and conventional RAG: questions to evaluate
The label “agentic” does not by itself establish that a system will answer more accurately. For an enterprise evaluation, ask how the product behaves on your own questions and data along these dimensions:

- Retrieval process: Is retrieval a fixed pipeline, or can the system plan sub-questions and revise its search?
- Source coverage: Does it use only pre-indexed content, or can it also reach live systems? Which sources are available and how are they connected?
- Source selection: Can it route a question across multiple repositories, and can administrators understand or control that routing?
- Permissions and citations: Do retrieved results respect the user’s access rights, and do citations take users to relevant underlying material?
- Evaluation: How will your team test factual quality, permission handling, response time, and operating cost against representative tasks?
Progress describes its platform as permission-aware, with role-based access control and end-to-end audit logging. These are vendor descriptions; the announcement and product page do not constitute independent validation of security, output quality, or comparative performance.

It also does not report an independent product comparison. Organizations considering the platform should test it with representative internal questions and data, including cases where sources disagree or a user lacks permission to see a document.
