Ben-Gvir Says Israel Should Seek Extradition of Flydubai Co-Pilot; UAE Claims Jurisdiction

Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said on October 1, 2026, that he would urge Israeli officials to seek the extradition of the Flydubai co-pilot accused of attacking the captain aboard flight FZ1073. That public demand is not evidence that Israel filed a formal request or that any transfer was approved. The UAE, meanwhile, said it was investigating and asserted jurisdiction because the aircraft was registered and flagged there. Reporting available on October 3 did not establish a final investigative finding or a court ruling on jurisdiction.

What happened on Flydubai flight FZ1073?

The Associated Press reported that Flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain with a cockpit crash axe and tried to take control of the aircraft. AP reported that 182 people were aboard.

According to AP’s account, the captain managed to unlock the cockpit door, after which passengers and others intervened and subdued the co-pilot. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Flydubai said crew members helped stabilize and land the plane.

Reuters, citing flight-tracking service Flightradar24, reported that the aircraft descended more than 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds. That is an attributed figure from Flightradar24, not an independent measurement in the reporting. The alleged attack and attempt to take control have not been adjudicated findings in the cited accounts.

Why is Ben-Gvir demanding extradition?

On October 1, Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said he would call on Israel’s security cabinet, Justice Ministry and diplomatic officials to seek the suspect’s extradition and prosecution in Israel. The Times of Israel reported his statement: “Anyone who planned to crash a plane and murder 180 Israelis must be extradited to Israel and pay the heaviest price here.”

That wording expresses Ben-Gvir’s demand and characterization of the allegation; it does not establish that the co-pilot planned a crash or intended to kill passengers. The AP reported 182 people aboard, while Ben-Gvir’s quoted statement referred to 180 Israelis.

The Jerusalem Post noted that Israel’s State Attorney’s Office handles extradition requests. But a minister’s public call for officials to seek extradition is distinct from the filing, consideration or approval of a formal request. The cited reporting did not establish that such a request had been filed.

The October 1 Times of Israel report said the suspect was then reported to be held in Saudi Arabia and identified Oman as his home country. It also reported that Saudi Arabia and Oman had no diplomatic relations with Israel, and that Israel had relations with the UAE but no bilateral extradition treaty with it. These were contemporaneous details, not confirmation of later custody or the status of any extradition process.

Why does the UAE say it has jurisdiction?

The UAE Attorney General, Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, ordered a Public Prosecution team to investigate the incident. UAE authorities said the inquiry would examine the circumstances and motives, including possible terrorist activity or intent and whether there had been prior planning or direction.

The UAE asserted that its courts have jurisdiction because the aircraft was registered in the UAE and flew under its flag. Al Shamsi, as quoted by Al Jazeera from UAE state-media reporting, said UAE law applies to crimes aboard UAE-registered, UAE-flagged aircraft “even if they occur outside the country’s territory”. This is the UAE’s stated legal position; the cited reports did not describe a court ruling that resolved competing jurisdiction claims.

Has the co-pilot been extradited to Israel?

Reporting available on October 3 did not establish that the co-pilot had been extradited, that Israel had formally requested extradition, or that any request had been decided. The October 1 report about the suspect being held in Saudi Arabia is a report of his status at that time, not a verified later custody update.

Do investigators know the motive?

No final motive was established in the cited reporting. Reuters reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleged the co-pilot had undergone Islamist radicalization, quoting him as saying, “We know that he underwent Islamist radical indoctrination. That appears to be something we are gathering from his personal information.” Reuters also reported Netanyahu’s caution: “But again, I don’t make final conclusions yet. But that’s the indications we have now.”

Reuters further reported that Israel’s envoy said it was too early to draw conclusions and that no motive had been determined. Netanyahu’s public assessment is not a verified investigative finding. AP’s October 3 report described the UAE as leading the investigation and said authorities characterized the alleged attack as terrorist; the inquiry was still open in reporting available that day.

AP also cited unnamed officials and diplomats for background allegations about the co-pilot’s previous work and vetting. Those claims remain attributed to anonymous sources and do not establish the findings of the investigation.
