Xbox achievements are game-defined objectives: when you meet an achievement’s requirements, it unlocks and adds its configured Gamerscore to your Xbox profile. That score is separate from Microsoft Rewards points and from any reward a game developer grants inside the game. “Challenge” can refer either to an in-game objective or to a time-limited Microsoft Rewards quest, so the reward depends on which one you mean.
What is Gamerscore?
Gamerscore is a common score that tracks achievements across the Xbox ecosystem. Each achievement has a Gamerscore value configured for it; unlocking it adds that value to your score. Gamerscore is a record of achievement progress, not Microsoft Rewards currency. Microsoft’s achievement documentation explains how games configure achievements and their rewards.

How do Xbox achievements work?
The game sets the objective
The game defines what you must do to unlock each achievement. Requirements vary by game and achievement; there is no single Xbox-wide task or completion rule. Microsoft’s developer certification requirements state that a single achievement cannot exceed 200 Gamerscore. That is a developer requirement, not a claim that every historic achievement has been configured under the same current standard. The same requirements say base-game achievements must be achievable without purchasing additional in-game content. See Microsoft’s Xbox certification requirements, indexed August 11, 2026.

An achievement’s configured Gamerscore is added to your Xbox score. Separately, a developer may configure an achievement to grant a reward inside the game. That in-game item or benefit is not Gamerscore and is not Microsoft Rewards currency. Whether an achievement grants an in-game reward depends on the game’s configuration, as described in Microsoft’s documentation for configuring achievement rewards.

What are Xbox challenges?
“Challenge” is used for different things. A game challenge is an objective set by a game; it may or may not be an Xbox achievement. A Microsoft Rewards quest is an offer in the Rewards program, which can include eligible Xbox gaming activity. Quests have their own completion terms and provide Rewards points under the current offer; they are not simply another name for Gamerscore achievements.
| Type | What triggers completion | What you receive | Where it belongs | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox achievement | Meet the game-defined achievement requirements | Configured Gamerscore; a developer may also configure a separate in-game reward | Xbox achievement and Gamerscore record; any game reward is within the game | Achievement requirements are set for the game; availability details may differ by title |
| In-game challenge | Meet the objective defined by the game | Whatever the game specifies; it is not automatically Gamerscore or Rewards points | Within the game | Set by the game; the game’s persistence rules are not established here |
| Microsoft Rewards quest | Meet the terms of a current Rewards offer | Microsoft Rewards points, if eligible under the offer | Microsoft Rewards program and its interface | Offers, point amounts, regional availability, and eligibility can change |
Do Xbox achievements give Microsoft Rewards points?
Not automatically. An achievement unlock adds its configured Gamerscore; Microsoft Rewards points belong to a separate program. Microsoft says eligible activities can include gaming on Xbox, but whether a particular activity earns points depends on current offers and eligibility. Check the Microsoft Rewards with Xbox information and the current offer terms in your Rewards interface.

Where can you check achievement progress?
Xbox Support has a guide called Tracking achievements in your game. Its current console, PC, and mobile navigation details are not established here, so exact menu paths may differ by device or interface version. For Rewards quests, use your Rewards interface to see current offers and their terms rather than relying on old quest examples.
