Follow those instructions, but do not treat the manufacturer’s broad maximum pressure and temperature claims as an approved rating for your particular connection. Confirm the joint’s actual operating conditions and suitability with the manufacturer and responsible engineering authority.
What to use on a threaded steam joint
X-Pando is a powder-based pipe-joint compound that is mixed with water and expands as it sets. X-Pando Products Company lists superheated steam among its applications. Its product page reports a maximum of “up to 5000 psig” and a temperature claim of “1000°F,” but does not define a joint-specific pressure-temperature envelope or establish that those maxima apply together. Treat them as broad manufacturer claims, not design limits for a steam line. X-Pando Pipe Joint Compound

The selection depends on more than the sealant’s headline temperature figure. Check the joint and thread condition, fluid, pressure and temperature together, installation requirements, and any applicable code or certification requirements. If the manufacturer’s published information does not establish suitability for your actual service, obtain current guidance before installation.

How X-Pando differs from PTFE tape
Chesterton 800 GoldEnd Tape is a separate option, not another name for X-Pando or an expanding cement equivalent. Chesterton describes it as dry PTFE thread-sealant tape and lists steam among its liquid applications. Its published temperature range is -240°C to 260°C (-400°F to 500°F). The manufacturer describes it as non-aging and non-hardening. Chesterton 800 GoldEnd Tape
#1 Best Overall
- Locks and seals threaded fittings
- Resists leakage, vibration loosening, moisture, hydraulic fluids and diesel fuels
- Lubricates threads for easy assembly and disassembly
- Parts may be repositioned up to 4 hours after application
- Suggested Applications: head bolts into through holes, oil PSI sending units and sensors, oil and coolant lines, fuel fittings, rear axle fill plug, brake and power steering fittings
These products differ in form and setting behavior: X-Pando is mixed with water and allowed to set, while 800 GoldEnd Tape is dry PTFE tape. The published tape range does not establish suitability for every steam joint; evaluate the actual service conditions and application requirements rather than assuming the products are interchangeable.
How to apply X-Pando
- Clean the threads. Remove debris and cutting oil. The manufacturer particularly cautions that contamination on stainless-steel threads can create a gap and permit leakage.
- Mix a thick paste. In a clean container, combine the dry powder with clean water at approximately five parts powder to one part water, then mix to a thick paste consistency.
- Cover the first four male threads. Brush or spread the compound across those threads. The FAQ says filling more than six threads is unnecessary and wasteful.
- Allow it to set before service. The manufacturer states that normal setup under ordinary temperature and atmospheric conditions takes about 24 hours. Its FAQ says low city-pressure joints may be used sooner, but advises waiting for full setup on high-pressure or damaged joints.
See the X-Pando manufacturer FAQ for its application instructions. Setup time is not a substitute for confirming that the material and joint are suitable for the system.

Can you speed up X-Pando’s setup?
The manufacturer’s FAQ lists heat lamps, infrared bulbs, heat guns, or torches as ways to accelerate drying, but warns: “DO NOT HEAT ABOVE 200°F. Higher heat may create steam and possibly fracture the X-Pando.” Do not exceed that limit when following this method, and use the manufacturer’s current instructions for the product in hand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the joint’s service and approval requirements
- Confirm pressure and temperature together. The product page’s “up to 5000 psig” and “1000°F” claims are not a combined allowable rating for a specific connection.
- Check fluid compatibility. X-Pando’s FAQ says the compound is not recommended for sealing liquids below pH 2 or above pH 12.
- Verify any required certification. X-Pando’s certification page states UL performance classification for threaded metal pipe joints and NSF/ANSI 61 and 372-related claims, among other references. These are manufacturer-published claims; check the current third-party listing and confirm it covers the exact product and application before relying on it. X-Pando certifications
- Review current handling documentation. The manufacturer provides a Safety Data Sheet for X-Pando Pipe Joint Compound. Consult the current SDS for its hazard and handling details rather than inferring them from product descriptions.
Choose the right product category for the maintenance job
For a threaded steam connection, compare a thread-joint compound such as X-Pando with a thread-sealant tape only after checking application instructions and system conditions. Do not substitute products intended for different tasks: Chesterton 783 ACR is positioned as an anti-seize compound for assembly and disassembly of threaded components, while Chesterton 185 is an expanded PTFE form-in-place gasket listed for flange applications including steam vessels. Neither is the same product category as a threaded-pipe joint sealant.
