There is no single official Wuthering Waves tier list, and the best starting pick depends on what you want to do. Compare characters by game mode, team role, ease of use, and how well they fit the Resonators you already have. If a Beginner’s Choice selector appears on your account, check its live in-game screen before choosing: its current availability and exact pool have not been confirmed.
How to read a Wuthering Waves tier list
Tier lists are editorial evaluations, not an official Kuro Games ranking. They can also answer different questions: one may rank individual characters for general PvE, while another may assess performance in a specific endgame mode or emphasize account value. A high individual placement does not automatically mean a character will make your current team stronger.

- Check the mode. Tower of Adversity and Whimpering Wastes have separate rankings on Prydwen, while Pocket Gamer describes its list as focused on PvE performance and possible late-game transition.
- Check whether the list ranks individuals or teams. Character strength in isolation does not establish how well a complete team performs.
- Check the date and version. Pocket Gamer says its list was updated September 4, 2026, for Version 3.6.3, adding Qingxiao and Jingran. That date is useful context, not a guarantee that the list reflects any later change.
These guides use different criteria, so do not combine their tiers into a single supposedly definitive order. See Pocket Gamer’s Wuthering Waves tier list, Prydwen’s mode-specific tier lists, and Wutheringlab’s tier list for their own evaluations and caveats.
Who to pick at the start
If the game presents you with a choice, first consider what your account needs rather than choosing solely by a tier label. A character can be a comfortable early-game pick without being the best option for every late-game mode, and a strong late-game evaluation may assume a team or roster you do not yet have.

- For a smoother start: favor a character whose playstyle you understand and whose role helps your current team function.
- For a specific endgame goal: consult the ranking for that mode, then check whether the character has a plausible team fit with your roster.
- For enjoyment: personal preference matters. A tier list cannot tell you which character you will most enjoy playing.
Pocket Gamer’s guide illustrates why stage matters: it rates Rover-Havoc S/A tier but calls the character situational, while placing Rover-Spectro at B tier and A tier early game. Treat those as that guide’s assessments, not fixed game facts or universal rankings.
Is there a free five-star selector?
Some guides describe an early-game five-star choice, but the selector’s current availability, eligibility rules, and exact character pool were not confirmed for October 7, 2026. Game8’s March 2026 guide describes a Beginner’s Choice Convene with five choices; that older guide does not establish what a new or returning player will see now.

Open the in-game Convene screen and read the current offer and rules before spending or making plans around it. Do not assume a particular character is available unless that character appears in the live selector for your account. The time-limited Starpath Reverbs notice from Kuro Games listed Jiyan, Yinlin, Jinhsi, Changli, Zhezhi, and Xiangli Yao as featured Resonator choices under that event’s rules; it is not evidence of a permanent beginner selector or a banner live on October 7, 2026.

What to do after choosing a Resonator
Use the in-game Guide Depot to look up recommendations for Echoes, upgrade priorities, Resonance Chain nodes, weapons, and teammates. Kuro Games notes that Guide Depot data refreshes can be delayed, so treat its recommendations as a useful starting point rather than a guarantee that every entry reflects the latest changes. Then check a current guide for the mode and team you care about.
