WTF, also known as wtfutil, is a free, open-source terminal dashboard that brings selected information from configurable modules into one view. It is designed for data you want to check at a glance—not as a general-purpose shell or a physical system-monitoring device. The project describes it as “the personal information dashboard for your terminal,” for important but infrequently needed stats and data. WTF project README

What does WTF do?

WTF displays information in a terminal dashboard. Rather than opening separate services or tools to check every update, you choose modules for the information you care about and arrange the dashboard around those needs. The repository gives examples including GitHub, Google Calendar, HackerNews, DigitalOcean, NewRelic, OpsGenie, Transmission and Trello. These are examples, not a guaranteed exhaustive or current module list. WTF project README

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

WTF is a configurable utility, not a replacement for the command line and not a device that monitors physical computer components. Its value is in surfacing selected service data in one terminal view.

How do I install wtfutil?

The official quick-start offers Homebrew and a standalone binary as straightforward ways to begin. The repository also documents Go installation, MacPorts, building from source, Docker and an Arch User Repository package. Which route fits depends on your operating system and whether you prefer a package manager or a standalone executable. Official quick-start WTF project README

  1. Homebrew: Run brew install wtfutil in a terminal. The project notes that the Homebrew core recipe can lag behind releases; it also describes a project tap for newer releases. Check the README for the current tap instructions and package status.
  2. Standalone binary: Download the appropriate binary from the project’s release resources and run it. Consult the quick-start for the current download and launch details.
  3. Other routes: Use Go, MacPorts, Docker, the Arch User Repository or a source build if that better matches your environment. Follow the repository’s current instructions for the selected method.

On first launch, WTF uses a default simple configuration. For custom dashboards, the quick-start points to the configuration guide. Command-line options include selecting a configuration file, displaying general help, requesting help for a named module when supported, and showing version information. Official quick-start

How do I add modules to WTF?

WTF’s units of functionality are modules. Users add and configure them in a config.yml file; each module’s documentation describes its own settings. Begin with the information source you want to see, then use that module’s documentation to determine the configuration it requires. WTF project README

What should you know about project status?

The README says WTF is informally maintained by volunteers and cautions that there is no guarantee a reported bug will be fixed or a requested feature implemented. That is the project’s own maintenance statement; it is not an independent assessment of code quality or security. WTF project README

The repository search result listed v0.49.1, dated April 17, 2026, as the latest release and displayed a notice about preparation for v1.0 and a rename from WTF to Tessera. These details can change, so check the repository for the current release and project name before installing or referring to a version. WTF project repository
