wsqlite TableSync: Add Optional SQLite Columns Without a Separate Alembic Script

The wsqlite TableSync example adds an optional Pydantic field to an existing SQLite database. Here’s how the documented workflow works and where its limits are.

With wsqlite, the documented TableSync example adds a missing SQLite column when you initialize the ORM with an updated Pydantic model against the same database file. The change shown is narrow: adding an optional field. It is not evidence that TableSync handles every kind of migration or replaces explicit migration tools for all applications.

What TableSync does in the documented example

The example in William Rodriguez’s DEV Community article starts with a Pydantic model containing id and name. It creates a WSQLite instance using that model and the file app.db, then inserts a user. In a later version of the model, it adds email: Optional[str] = None. Initializing WSQLite with the updated model and the same file is described as running ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN for the missing column. The article then inserts a record with an email value. Read the example on DEV Community.

That describes an additive, model-driven change: the model gains a field and the database gains a corresponding column. The article’s statement that “wsqlite’s TableSync inspects the schema and adds missing columns automatically” is the author’s description, not an independently verified guarantee.

How to understand the workflow

  1. Define the original model. The example begins with a UserV1 model containing id and name.
  2. Open the SQLite file with that model. The example initializes WSQLite(UserV1, "app.db") and inserts a user.
  3. Add an optional field in the later model. UserV2 includes email: Optional[str] = None.
  4. Initialize against the same file. The example uses WSQLite(UserV2, "app.db"); the article says this adds the absent column with ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN.
  5. Write a record using the new field. The example inserts a user with an email value.

These are the article’s described steps, not a tested recipe for every wsqlite version or schema. Confirm the package’s current behavior and the resulting database structure in your own environment before relying on the change.

Where automatic additions fit—and where the evidence stops

The wsqlite repository describes the project as a Python ORM for SQLite using Pydantic v2. Its README lists automatic table creation and synchronization, automatic addition of newly detected model columns, and a separate versioned migration system. See the wsqlite repository README.

This makes TableSync relevant when the intended change is simply to add a field represented by a new database column. It does not establish that the feature can safely perform arbitrary schema transformations. The reviewed article and README do not settle how destructive changes, required fields without defaults, rollback, simultaneous application startups, or production zero-downtime deployments behave.

Does this mean you can replace Alembic?

Not on the available evidence. The example shows one additive change, while the repository also lists versioned migrations. It does not provide enough detail for a general technical comparison with Alembic or explicit migration scripts. For a real application, evaluate whether your schema changes need controlled deployment steps, reviewable history, rollback procedures, or coordination across running application versions. Treat automatic column addition as a specific documented capability, not a blanket substitute for migration planning.

Practical checks before using it

  • Confirm that the change is additive and that the updated Pydantic field maps to the column you expect.
  • Verify the installed wsqlite version and consult its current documentation; the package page surfaced in search results but could not be opened for verification here.
  • Test initialization and writes against a copy of the existing SQLite database, then inspect the resulting schema and existing rows.
  • Decide separately how you will recover if deployment fails. The cited materials do not document rollback behavior for TableSync.
  • For changes beyond adding a column, use a migration approach whose behavior for that specific transformation is documented and tested.
