WPP has named Eric Campbell as the next global chief executive of VML, with the change scheduled for March 2027. Jon Cook will remain in his leadership roles through that month to support the transition; Campbell is also to continue as CEO of WPP Creative North America.

When does Eric Campbell become VML’s global CEO?

WPP announced the succession on October 2, 2026, but Campbell has not yet taken the global role. The appointment is scheduled to take effect in March 2027. WPP says Cook and Campbell will begin transferring global responsibilities immediately and work together through the transition.

What happens to Jon Cook?

Cook, then Global CEO of VML and CEO of WPP Creative, has decided to leave WPP to pursue what he called “the next chapter of his career.” He will stay in both leadership roles through March 2027. Cook said after “three decades” at the agency and WPP, he was ready “to build something new”; WPP has not announced more specific details about his plans. These descriptions come from Cook and WPP’s announcement, rather than an independently calculated employment history.

Which roles will Campbell hold?

From March 2027, Campbell is scheduled to become Global CEO of VML while continuing as CEO of WPP Creative North America. WPP has not said that he will take over Cook’s global WPP Creative role. The company says it will share further details about WPP Creative’s leadership structure later.

Who is Eric Campbell?

WPP says Campbell has worked at VML for more than 25 years. The company lists previous senior positions including President of VML, Global President of VMLY&R, Global Chief Client Officer, and CEO of VML North America.

VML’s official biography says Campbell joined the company in 1999 and joined its Executive Leadership Team in 2007. It also says he led the launch of VML Seattle in 2004 while working on Microsoft, later served as chief business officer, and earned a Bachelor of Science in graphic arts technology management from the University of Central Missouri. These are company-supplied biographical details.

VML announced Campbell as North American CEO on January 17, 2025. At that time, it said he would oversee the network’s North American offices while continuing as Global Chief Client Officer and reporting to Cook (VML’s announcement).

How does VML fit into WPP?

WPP says VML was formed in 2024 by combining VMLY&R and Wunderman Thompson. The parent company describes the resulting network as combining brand experience, customer experience, commerce, data, and enterprise technology across more than 55 markets. Those are WPP’s descriptions of the agency and its footprint, not independent rankings or assessments (WPP’s launch announcement).

What WPP said about the succession

WPP CEO Cindy Rose praised Cook’s contribution to the company and said she was grateful for his commitment to remain through March 2027, helping teams, clients, and incoming leaders maintain momentum. Rose described Campbell as having been central to VML for more than 25 years and as having helped shape its client relationships, operations, and culture. These assessments were made by Rose in WPP’s announcement.

WPP’s announcement is the primary source for the planned change and role distinctions. VML also confirmed Campbell’s planned appointment.
