On says its Cloudsurfer 3 pairs a new in-house superfoam, Surreal, with re-engineered CloudTec Phase geometry to create a soft, smooth everyday running ride. The shoe is designed for easy and recovery runs through longer training sessions; its headline performance figures come from On’s computer simulations, not independent testing.
What is Surreal foam, and how does On say it works?
On says it developed Surreal at its Foam Competency Center at On Labs Zurich, drawing on material science and biomechanical research. The company describes the foam as lighter, softer and more responsive than Helion, its previous everyday running foam. Those are On’s characterizations, rather than results from a published independent comparison.

The Cloudsurfer 3 is the first product On announced with Surreal. The shoe combines the foam with redesigned CloudTec Phase geometry: On says the Cloud elements compress in sequence as the foot moves, helping create a smoother roll from landing to toe-off. In a T3 interview, On Product Manager Zoé Gerdil added that the team engineered cavities in the foam to work with the geometry in a heel-to-forefoot sequence. On’s September 15, 2026 announcement and T3’s September 16 interview describe the design.

On reports 15.5% more compression and a 9.9% reduction in peak braking force for the integrated CloudTec Phase-and-Surreal system compared with the superfoam compound on its own. The figures come from On’s internal Advanced Finite Element Analysis at On Labs Zurich, a predictive computer-modeling technique. On defines peak braking force as the maximum resistance to forward horizontal motion.

- Runs become play
- Runs become play
These are simulation results reported by the shoe’s maker, not independently measured running outcomes. They describe the combined system’s modeled behavior against a foam-only comparison; they do not establish how much softer, faster or more efficient an individual runner will find the shoe.
Who is the Cloudsurfer 3 designed for?
On positions it as an everyday trainer spanning casual and recovery runs to longer training sessions. T3 reports that Gerdil described the Cloudsurfer family as suitable for a broad range of runners, including people new or returning to running and athletes seeking a recovery-day shoe. T3 also characterizes Cloudsurfer as On’s neutral-cushioning family, in contrast with the brand’s Cloudrunner support-and-stability line and Cloudmonster responsiveness-and-versatility line; that is the interview’s description of the range.

- The design for the engineered woven upper is inspired by our pinnacle race shoe, the Cloudboom Echo 3. Light and breathable, it provides a comfortable, seamless fit.
- The CloudTec Phase midsole structure creates a seamless heel-to-toe transition. Made with a refined Helion superfoam compound, it's also bouncier and more responsive.
- Lighter and more cushioned, the Cloudsurfer Next propels you forward for a faster and more responsive ride. At the forefoot, the new, agile rocker helps you push off with power.
- Recycled content polyester: 77%, Recycled content polyurethane: 22%, Recycled content thermoplastic polyurethane: 21%, Recycled content EVA: 3%.
- More agile. More dynamic. More get-up-and-go.
Hands-on impressions suggest a more specific use-case distinction. Tom’s Guide reviewer Nick Harris-Fry reported a soft, smooth ride, good transitions at easy-to-steady paces and extra spring from the toes over a couple of runs. He also said he would not choose it for speed sessions. These are one reviewer’s observations, not a universal verdict.
What changed beyond the foam?
On describes the Cloudsurfer 3’s evolved Warp Knit upper as breathable, secure and adaptive. T3 reports additional construction details from its interview: a revised heel counter, a heavily padded tongue, simplified lacing and more upper stretch. It also reports an approximately 45 mm total stack when sockliner, midsole and outsole are counted together, plus 3 mm of outsole rubber in key high-wear areas. Those stack and rubber details are T3’s reporting, not figures in On’s announcement.

Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found the outsole gripped a little better on damp sidewalks than the Cloudsurfer 2 in a brief one-foot comparison. That limited comparison is useful context, but it does not establish grip performance across surfaces or conditions.
Cloudsurfer 3 specifications and announced prices
| Specification | Cloudsurfer 3 |
|---|---|
| Listed weight | 285 g for men’s US 8.5 (On, 2026) |
| Drop | 8 mm (On, 2026) |
| Size range | 36–49 (On, 2026) |
| Announced price | $160 / €170 / £150 / CHF 210 (On, 2026; announcement prices, check local listings for current price) |
Weight depends on the reference size: Tom’s Guide measured a men’s US 9.5 at 10.8 oz, compared with 9.4 oz for the Cloudsurfer 2 in the same size. That reviewer-specific measurement is not directly interchangeable with On’s 285 g specification for a men’s US 8.5.

When and where is it available?
On announced a specialist-running-retailer pre-launch beginning October 1, 2026, followed by a planned full global rollout across channels including On.com and On retail stores in early 2027. These are announced dates, not confirmation that the shoe is in stock at a particular retailer or in every market. Check local listings for availability and current pricing. See On’s announcement for the launch plan.

- Midsole / outsole Using FEA technology, we simulated and analyzed different outsole designs in order to find the optimal geometry for improved durability.
- Speedboard For the softest and smoothest running sensation, we engineered the Cloudsurfer 2 without a Speedboard – instead, relying on our structural cushioning system: CloudTec Phase.
- Upper Breathable mesh upper made from 88% recycled polyester. Embroidered overlays – also made with recycled yarn – provide support and structure around the foot.
