If older devices will not connect, try WPA2/WPA3 transition mode. If WPA3 is unavailable, choose WPA2-Personal with AES and a strong, unique password. Avoid WEP and the original WPA option.
What changes when you choose WPA3?
For personal networks, WPA3 replaces WPA2-Personal’s pre-shared-key authentication exchange with Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE). SAE improves resistance to password-guessing attacks, but it does not make a weak password safe or protect a network from every threat. Use a strong, unique Wi-Fi password and keep router firmware supported and up to date. The NSA’s June 2018 technical report on WPA3 and WPA2 describes these security changes.

WPA3 also requires Protected Management Frames (PMF), which add integrity protection to Wi-Fi management traffic. Without that protection, certain management actions—such as connection or disconnection messages—can be forged to disrupt a connection. The NSA report says, “PMF ensures integrity of network management traffic.” PMF reduces particular risks; it does not make a Wi-Fi network invulnerable. The Wi-Fi Alliance’s June 26, 2018 WPA3 launch announcement states that PMF is required on WPA3 networks.

WPA3-Personal only
Choose this when your router supports WPA3 and every device that must stay connected can use it. Before switching, check the devices you rely on, including phones, computers, printers, and smart-home equipment. Both the router or access point and each client need compatible hardware and software; firmware, operating-system support, and Wi-Fi drivers can affect whether a device connects.

WPA2/WPA3 transition mode
Use transition mode when you want WPA3 for capable devices but still need older clients to connect using WPA2. The Wi-Fi Alliance said transition mode “maintains interoperability with WPA2 devices” in its 2018 launch announcement. That describes the mode’s purpose, not a guarantee: individual devices or router implementations may still have compatibility problems. A Wi-Fi Alliance deployment guide, version 1.1 (2025), hosted by LaFibre.info, also discusses transition and compatibility modes. For exact setup and troubleshooting, follow documentation for your router model.
WPA2-Personal with AES
If WPA3 is not available or a necessary device cannot use it, WPA2-Personal with AES remains a practical choice. Set a strong, unique passphrase and keep the router on supported firmware. Do not fall back to WEP, original WPA, or TKIP.

WPA3-Enterprise
This is generally not the option a home user needs. WPA3-Enterprise is intended for managed networks and uses enterprise authentication; Microsoft describes it in connection with 802.1X authentication and a RADIUS server. For a typical home network, look for WPA3-Personal instead. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi security support documentation for its Windows guidance.
Check compatibility before changing the router
- Check the router’s security options. Look in its Wi-Fi or wireless security settings for WPA3-Personal or WPA2/WPA3 transition mode. Menu names vary by manufacturer and model.
- Check the devices that need to remain connected. Review the specifications and support information for each device, including its operating system, Wi-Fi adapter, driver, and firmware where applicable.
- Choose WPA3-Personal if all essential devices support it. If not, try transition mode if the router offers it.
- Reconnect and test important devices. Verify that phones, computers, printers, and smart-home devices can join and remain connected. If a device fails, consult its manufacturer and your router’s instructions; transition mode does not resolve every implementation-specific issue.
Support is device-specific, not guaranteed by a product category or operating-system name alone. Microsoft states that Windows 11 supports WPA3, but that does not establish that every Windows PC can use it: the computer’s Wi-Fi adapter and driver, as well as the access point, also matter. The Wi-Fi Alliance certification record for a specific access point is an example of certified hardware with WPA3-Personal support, not proof that every router offers the feature.

Does WPA3 make Wi-Fi faster?
No speed increase should be expected just from changing the security setting. WPA3 is a security protocol, not a Wi-Fi generation or broadband upgrade. The cited sources describe authentication and security features, not a controlled throughput comparison, so they do not establish a speed figure for switching from WPA2 to WPA3. Wi-Fi radio generation, router and client capabilities, signal and channel conditions, and your internet service are separate factors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is a router replacement justified?
Do not replace a router solely because WPA3 exists. First check whether your current model supports WPA3 and whether its manufacturer still provides security updates. A replacement may be worth considering if the router lacks WPA3 and is no longer supported, but WPA2-Personal with AES remains a reasonable fallback when the router is supported and WPA3 is not an option. If you do shop for new hardware, verify WPA3-Personal support for the specific model rather than assuming it is universal.
