How to Find a Running Club and Choose the Right Group for Your Pace

To find a running club near you, check local running stores, club directories, Meetup, Strava, social media, and local races—then contact organizers to confirm the pace, distance, beginner support, schedule, meeting point, and cost. There is no universal minimum pace or experience requirement: the right group is one whose format and purpose fit the running you can comfortably do now.

Where to find running clubs and group runs

Search by city or neighborhood, and check more than one source. A listing is a lead, not confirmation that a group still meets or suits your needs; verify current details with the club or organizer.

  • Local running stores: Ask whether the store hosts group runs or knows of nearby clubs.
  • Club and group directories: RunningGroups.org has listings with categories such as beginner-friendly, no-drop, and all-paces. Treat those labels as a starting point and confirm what the group actually offers.
  • Running organizations: In England, England Athletics’ RunTogether provides a club and group finder. The program describes sessions intended to encourage beginner runners, with formats that may range from walk-run to longer runs.
  • Community and activity platforms: Meetup, Strava, and Facebook can surface local groups and informal runs. Check the group’s own page or contact its organizer for current arrangements.
  • Local races: Ask race organizers or other participants whether local clubs run together or offer training groups.

Fleet Feet outlines these discovery routes, including stores, RRCA, Meetup, Strava, Facebook, and races, in its guide to finding a running group. Which sources are useful depends on your area.

How to tell whether a group matches your pace

Before choosing a pace group, find out what the pace number means. It might describe an easy conversational run, a structured workout, or a pace based on a race result. Ask which pace bands are available, what distance the group usually covers, and whether walking intervals are included. L.A. Leggers, for example, explains pace groups using both running and walking intervals; that is its approach, not a standard every club follows.

Give the organizer an honest picture of your current running rather than the pace you hope to reach. Useful details include your comfortable pace, weekly mileage, longest recent run, any recent race time, and the distance you are working toward. Runner’s World recommends asking about matching members’ pace and distance and being ready to share those details when you inquire. Its guide to choosing a running group also suggests checking when and where the group meets.

There is no universal pace threshold or experience level for joining. Ask what the slowest group does, whether it welcomes run-walk participants, and whether runners wait or regroup if people spread out. Directory labels such as “beginner” or “no-drop” can help you shortlist options, but confirm how the club defines them.

Choose a group for its purpose, not just its pace

Groups with similar paces can still offer very different experiences. Ask what a typical session looks like and choose one aligned with why you want to run with others.

  • Beginner or goal-race program: A structured program, such as one aimed at a first 5K, may suit you if you want a plan and support toward a specific distance.
  • Social or casual run: This can be a better fit if your priority is company and an enjoyable shared run rather than a training schedule.
  • Speed-focused training: A coached or workout-oriented group may include more structured sessions and may charge a fee.

These are different kinds of groups, not a ranking. Fleet Feet discusses matching a group to goals such as social running, training for an event, or getting faster.

What to confirm before your first visit

Ask the organizer for the practical details before setting out. Schedules and policies can change, and a directory entry may not reflect the latest arrangements.

  • Which day and time does the group meet, and how often?
  • What is the exact meeting point—not just the park or neighborhood?
  • What route and distance are planned, and can the distance vary?
  • Which pace group should you join, and how does the club define its pace?
  • Does the group include walk breaks, wait for slower runners, or regroup?
  • Is attendance drop-in or expected regularly?
  • Is the run free, or is there a membership or program fee? If there is a charge, what does it include?
  • Are there any current policies or availability limits to know about?

Some group runs are free; some memberships or coached programs charge. Confirm the current cost and what it covers directly with the organizer instead of assuming that a listing is up to date.

How to make the first visit low-pressure

You do not have to commit to a club before finding out whether it fits. Send a short message with your current running details and ask which group to join. For example:

I’m new to group runs. I usually run at about [pace] for [distance], and my recent longest run was [distance]. Which group should I join, and do you regroup or include walk breaks?

That gives the organizer enough context to point you toward a suitable group and explain its format. At the first run, follow the organizer’s directions about where to meet and which group to start with. You can try a few groups to compare the running format and social atmosphere before deciding where you feel most comfortable.
