A WP Engine speed test measures one page under one set of conditions—not your whole site in every situation. For a useful comparison, keep the URL, test setup, and cache state consistent; separate fresh requests from cache hits; and use WP Engine Performance Insights for platform trends rather than treating it as another external page-speed score.
How do I run a WP Engine speed test?
- Choose one representative public URL. Test the page that matters—a landing page, product page, or article—not only the homepage. Keep that exact URL and page content for later comparisons.
- Run an external page test and save the result. Record the tool, timestamp, device or emulation, test location if available, and whether the run followed a cache purge or was likely served from cache. An external test is a snapshot of that page under that particular setup.
- Repeat under comparable conditions. Do not treat a first request that generates a cache entry and later cache hits as equivalent runs. WP Engine notes that several requests may be needed before a page is served from cache; its support documentation describes using cURL and response headers to inspect cache behavior. - Check platform reporting separately. In your WP Engine User Portal, open Performance Insights for the environment you want to assess. Use it to understand performance trends and platform metrics; it answers a different question from an external test of one URL.
- Change one likely cause at a time, then retest. Make changes in staging or development when practical, and compare results using the same URL and similar test conditions.
Why do WP Engine speed test results vary?
A result depends on the specific page, the test tool’s location and device settings, the time of the run, and whether caches were warm. It also matters whether you are looking at a single page-load snapshot, a platform-level trend, or an application diagnostic. Record those conditions beside each result; compare like with like rather than treating a score as a permanent property of the site.

WP Engine uses multiple caching layers
WP Engine documents server (Varnish), network/CDN, optional object, and browser caching. Its support page says page cache expires after 10 minutes by default; Edge Full Page Cache stores HTML at Cloudflare’s CDN when the applicable network service is enabled; and static assets have a default 365-day browser-cache expiration on its platform. These are documented defaults, not a guarantee that every request follows the same path. Details: WP Engine’s caching documentation.
A fresh request and a cache hit are different test conditions. WP Engine says a page may be uncached on its initial request and that several consecutive cURL requests may be needed to generate cached hits. Its cache documentation explains that an x-cache response header with HIT indicates service from that cache layer, while MISS means the request was not served from that layer. A miss does not, by itself, establish why the response was uncached or what another caching layer did.

Keep browser state in mind
When testing an update, a private or incognito browser session can help check the page with a fresh browser cache. WP Engine cautions that these sessions retain cache until they are reopened. Its troubleshooting guidance also recommends purging cache when testing updated content. See How to Fix a WordPress Website.
How can I test changes without risking a live site?
Use a staging or development environment for changes when practical. WP Engine describes environments as separate WordPress installations and recommends staging for testing minor changes such as plugin updates. Before troubleshooting, it recommends creating a checkpoint or using staging/development; that gives you a safer way to assess a change before applying it to production. For style updates, dynamic query strings can help during staging or development. WP Engine says dynamic query strings are not recommended on live production sites because caching matters for page-loading performance. Inspect the response headers for the tested URL. WP Engine documents cURL as one method and identifies x-cache values as an indication of whether a request was served from the relevant cache layer: HIT means it was, and MISS means it was not. The header describes that cache layer, so do not infer from it alone whether a CDN, browser, or other layer also affected the full delivery path. If a test follows a cache purge or site change, keep that condition in your notes. Compare the first request separately from subsequent hits rather than combining unlike runs into one average.
External speed test or Performance Insights: which should I use?

Performance Insights is not interchangeable with an external page test. WP Engine says its site score combines latency and cacheability across a seven-day lookback — WP Engine, 2026. A day needs at least 150 page requests in a day — WP Engine, 2026 to generate a score, and a new site begins showing a score seven days after the first day it meets that threshold. The cacheability measure is calculated on a 24-hour cacheability measurement interval — WP Engine, 2026. WP Engine measures latency from its servers, and its cache-hit ratio refers to Varnish page cache, not Cloudflare CDN cache. Consult View Performance Insights for definitions and context.

WP Engine notes its score may be less relevant for sites where all users log in, sites that do not experience viral traffic, or sites that do not prioritize high search ranking. Choose the metric that matches the issue you are trying to resolve; a single score does not prove that a site is universally fast or slow.

First confirm the result is repeatable under comparable conditions and identify whether the issue is limited to one page or appears in platform reporting as well. If the page test shows a concern but does not explain its cause, the diagnostic should match the question: Performance Insights supplies platform-level context, while Application Performance is intended for ongoing code-level investigation.

WP Engine describes Application Performance as an ongoing diagnostic through New Relic. It is a paid extension, cannot be purchased on Shared plans, and WP Engine recommends code-development experience to get the most from it. Details and eligibility are in Monitor Application Performance.
