Progressive and Allstate describe their rideshare options particularly clearly; State Farm and Farmers also offer named options. Use them as a shortlist to check with local agents—not as a price ranking.
Before driving for Uber, Lyft or another transportation network company (TNC), tell your insurer and ask what covers you in each app phase: waiting for a request, driving to a pickup, and carrying a passenger. A rideshare endorsement may address gaps in your personal policy, but it does not guarantee identical or complete coverage in every state or situation.

What to compare in rideshare insurance
Rideshare coverage is not one blanket benefit. Your personal policy, any endorsement and the TNC’s insurance can apply differently as your app status changes. Compare the protections below for each phase, and ask the insurer to explain how its policy coordinates with the specific platform’s coverage.
- State and eligibility: Confirm the insurer offers the endorsement in your state and accepts your exact platform and type of work. Ask separately about delivery services if you plan to deliver.
- App phases: Ask what applies while you are waiting for a request, driving to pick up a passenger and carrying that passenger. Do not assume the TNC’s coverage starts at the same point for every platform or policy.
- Damage to your vehicle: Check whether collision and comprehensive coverage apply while waiting, and whether you must already have those coverages on your personal policy.
- Deductibles: Compare your personal-policy deductible with any deductible that could apply under the TNC’s coverage. Ask whether the endorsement helps with the difference and under what terms.
- Medical and uninsured-driver protection: Ask whether personal injury protection (PIP), medical payments, and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage apply to you or passengers—and during which app phase.
- Price at equivalent limits: Get local quotes using the same vehicle, driver information, limits and deductibles. Public product pages do not establish a meaningful nationwide premium comparison.

Does car insurance cover you while waiting for a ride?
Do not assume your personal auto policy covers TNC driving as ordinary personal use. Coverage while logged into an app and waiting for a request is a key reason drivers investigate an endorsement, but the protections depend on the policy, state and platform. Ask the insurer to identify what applies in that waiting phase, including liability and damage to your own vehicle, and what comes from the TNC instead. Allstate’s rideshare insurance explainer discusses how coverage and TNC arrangements can differ.
Allstate’s explainer gives examples including $25,000 in property-damage liability and $100,000 in injury liability while waiting, plus a possible $2,500 vehicle deductible in later phases. These are examples in Allstate’s guidance, not universal current limits or deductibles. Confirm the applicable TNC policy, state law and current terms for your situation.

Does rideshare insurance cover Uber Eats or DoorDash?
Delivery coverage is not automatic just because an insurer offers a rideshare endorsement. Progressive says its rideshare coverage applies to delivery services in most states, while noting that the interaction with a delivery platform’s insurance varies by state. For any insurer, ask directly whether the endorsement applies to Uber Eats, DoorDash or your specific delivery service, and what protection applies during each app phase.
Uber lists AAA, Allstate, American Family, Amica, Erie, Esurance, Farmers, Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Travelers, USAA and Progressive as insurers that may offer personal rideshare and delivery coverage options. That is a platform-supplied list, not confirmation that every carrier offers coverage in every state. See Uber’s driver insurance information.

How to choose and get a comparable quote
- Tell your insurer before you start. Explain whether you will carry passengers, make deliveries or do both, and name each app you plan to use.
- Map coverage to app phases. Ask what your personal policy, endorsement and the TNC’s insurance each cover while waiting, en route to pickup and carrying a passenger.
- Check your own-car protection. Confirm collision, comprehensive, medical and UM/UIM coverage by phase, and whether those protections require matching coverages on your personal policy.
- Compare deductibles and limits. Ask about the personal deductible, any TNC deductible and whether the endorsement addresses a difference. Use the same liability limits and deductibles for every quote.
- Request quotes from insurers available locally. Keep the vehicle, drivers, driving history and coverage selections consistent. Compare the actual policy terms as well as the premium.
- Get the details in writing. Ask for the applicable endorsement and policy language, confirm platform and state eligibility, and check when coverage takes effect.
What a nationwide “best” ranking cannot tell you
Insurer product descriptions can help identify options, but they do not establish which company will be cheapest or best for an individual driver. Premiums and coverage depend on location and policy details, and the available information does not provide comparable quotes across companies. Choose based on verified local availability and the protections you need—not a universal ranking.
