It encodes your production on a computer and sends it to YouTube. Wowza Streaming Engine is server software that can receive an incoming stream and forward it to YouTube. They are not direct substitutes: OBS can feed Wowza, which can then handle the downstream connection. Neither setup, by itself, guarantees an unattended 24/7 channel; reliability depends on the source, encoding host, network, destination configuration, and monitoring.
What each product does in the streaming chain
OBS Studio: produce and encode on a computer
OBS Studio is a software encoder and production application. It can combine sources into a composed feed, encode that feed, and send it to YouTube using the stream details from YouTube Studio. In a direct setup, the computer running OBS is part of the live-stream path: if it stops encoding or loses its connection, YouTube stops receiving the feed.

Wowza Streaming Engine: receive and route a stream
Wowza Streaming Engine is server software. It can ingest a source stream and forward it to a configured destination such as YouTube. Its YouTube workflow uses a Wowza application, a source stream, and an enabled YouTube Live stream target. Wowza’s guide describes sending a single stream to YouTube for distributed delivery and adaptive bitrate playback: Stream to YouTube from Wowza Streaming Engine.
They can be used together
OBS does not have to connect directly to YouTube. It can publish to Wowza, with Wowza acting as the downstream server layer. This makes sense when the workflow needs server-side ingest, protocol handling, or routing; it adds configuration and another component to operate if the only goal is one composed feed to YouTube.

Configure a direct OBS-to-YouTube stream
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use. Find its stream URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes a stream key as functioning like the address and password that let an encoder send a feed. Treat it as a credential; do not publish it or include it in screenshots or logs you share.
- Enter the stream details in OBS. Configure OBS to connect to YouTube using the server URL and key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Set encoding to match your stream and upload link. Consult YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than relying on a bitrate figure in isolation. For H.264, YouTube lists 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube guidance figures, not universal minimums. Its guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency, with four seconds as the maximum; it supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Check the live table at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a production stream.
- Decide how encoder start and stop should work. YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls for encoder workflows. These let an encoder start or stop a stream under the configured conditions; they are not, on their own, proof of automatic recovery after every failure. See Manage live stream settings.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and typical motion, check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test. The available upload capacity must reliably accommodate the selected video bitrate plus audio and network overhead.
Configure Wowza Streaming Engine to forward to YouTube
- Create the destination in YouTube Studio. Create or select the YouTube live stream and note the stream URL and key. Protect the key as a credential.
- Create a Live application in Streaming Engine. This application is the Wowza-side environment for receiving the source stream.
- Add a YouTube Live stream target. Supply the incoming source stream and the destination details from YouTube. Wowza sends the target to YouTube over RTMP, according to its setup guide.
- Enable Stream Targets and the specific target. Confirm both are enabled; configuring a destination without enabling it will not start the push.
- Send a source into Wowza and verify both legs. Confirm that Wowza receives the source, then check the target state and YouTube Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed. Wowza’s target states distinguish a target waiting for its source or initialization, an active push, and a connection or configuration error.
- Test with the real workload. Check video, audio, stream health, throughput, and continuity under representative conditions. Wowza’s setup details are at its YouTube Streaming Engine guide.
Plan the encoding host and network around the workload
OBS requirements depend on what you produce
OBS says compatible hardware does not guarantee that a system can stream or record. CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; its system requirements point users to the Auto Configuration Wizard. A static loop, a multi-source scene, and a high-frame-rate production are different workloads, so test the actual scene and settings on the intended host before relying on it unattended.

Wowza’s published server recommendations are not a guarantee
Wowza’s technical specifications, updated July 15, 2026, list a minimum-production recommendation of a quad-core CPU at 3.00 GHz or better, 4 GB RAM, HDD storage, and a 1 Gbps network. Its high-load recommendation is six cores at 3.00 GHz or better, 16–32 GB RAM, SSD storage, and 10 Gbps Ethernet. These are Wowza recommendations for its server software, not a guarantee that a particular deployment will carry a specific stream, nor evidence that an internet service plan provides that throughput. See Wowza Streaming Engine technical specifications.
Choose bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance and your connection
Resolution and frame rate affect the recommended bitrate, but motion and encoding conditions matter too. Check YouTube’s current settings table for the chosen codec and output, run an upload speed test, and monitor the health of a representative live test. Do not assume a connection is suitable just because a speed test briefly reaches the target bitrate.

What 24/7 operation actually requires
A continuous channel is a whole-system responsibility, not a feature implied by either product name. The source must remain available, the encoder or server must keep running, the network must carry the feed, and the destination settings must remain valid. You also need a way to notice and respond when one part fails.
- Source continuity: Confirm that the video or production source is available for the planned schedule.
- Host continuity: Keep the computer or server powered, connected, and able to sustain the workload.
- Destination verification: Monitor YouTube Live Control Room for the direct OBS route, or both Wowza target status and YouTube reception for the Wowza route.
- Recovery planning: Decide who checks alerts and what to do if the source, host, network, or YouTube connection drops. The documented controls and status indicators help operate the workflows but do not establish universal automatic recovery from every failure.
YouTube’s 24/7 live-streaming arrangements should also be judged separately from the choice of encoder or server. Use content you have rights to stream and check YouTube’s current live-stream policies and copyright requirements. Replaying or looping material does not itself establish that you have the necessary rights or that the channel complies with YouTube policies.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive an OBS feed: Check that the selected live stream is the intended destination, the server URL and key match its current settings, and the connection is not blocked. Verify encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room status.
- Wowza target stays in Waiting: Check that the source stream has started and is reaching the correct Wowza application, then confirm the target is enabled.
- Wowza target shows Error: Check the destination URL and key, network connectivity to YouTube, and whether the target configuration is enabled and correct. Verify again in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Video buffers or stream health degrades: Compare the selected bitrate with sustained upload capacity, check the encoder’s actual output, and test at the intended resolution, frame rate, and representative motion. Reduce the workload or bitrate if the host or connection cannot sustain it, using YouTube’s current guidance.
- Stream drops after a power or network interruption: Identify which component stopped—the source, OBS host, Wowza host, or network—and restore that leg before expecting the destination to receive video. Auto-start/auto-stop settings do not replace monitoring or an end-to-end recovery plan.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel looping uploaded recordings rather than a live camera production, StreamNeo is a different route: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video sent to YouTube, not a camera-based production. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free first day.
