For a Wowza-to-YouTube live stream, use a 2-second keyframe interval (never more than 4 seconds), CBR rate control, and a bitrate selected from YouTube’s live-ingestion table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Send the YouTube Studio stream URL and key over RTMPS where supported. The exact controls depend on whether you use Wowza Video or Wowza Streaming Engine, so treat the product-specific notes below accordingly.
Recommended settings for the YouTube-bound stream
These are settings for the output that reaches YouTube. If Wowza receives an encoded source and then creates an output rendition, do not assume the source’s bitrate is also the bitrate YouTube receives.

| Setting | Recommendation | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds | YouTube-bound video |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) | YouTube-bound video |
| Video bitrate | Choose the applicable row in YouTube’s live encoder table for your codec, resolution, and frame rate | YouTube-bound video |
| Delivery protocol | RTMPS is recommended by YouTube; use the supported RTMP or RTMPS endpoint and key provided in YouTube Studio | Wowza output connection to YouTube |
YouTube’s live encoder guidance says: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance provides the bitrate table and other current requirements. The figures vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so a single bitrate number is not a safe recommendation for every stream.

Source entering Wowza
The source bitrate is the rate of the video encoded before it enters Wowza. Wowza’s published source-encoder guidance gives 1080p a supported range of 3,200–6,000 Kbps and recommends 4,400 Kbps as a video-bitrate reference. Its encoding best-practices page also gives 6,000 Kbps as an example maximum source video bitrate for 1080p. These are Wowza source-encoding references, not substitutes for YouTube’s ingest table.

- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
If your encoder sends a source into Wowza, choose its settings for the source workflow and the output profile you intend to produce. See Wowza Technical Support’s recommended encoder bitrates and Wowza’s source encoding best practices.
Output from Wowza to YouTube
For the YouTube-bound rendition, choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table that matches the rendition’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not copy the input bitrate blindly: Wowza may send an output rendition with different settings, depending on how the workflow is configured. In Wowza Video’s documented YouTube integration, you select an output rendition and provide YouTube’s stream URL and key; YouTube performs transcoding in that workflow. See Wowza’s YouTube Live integration guide.

Set up the Wowza-to-YouTube connection
Wowza Video and Wowza Streaming Engine are different products. The published integration instructions cited here cover Wowza Video; do not assume their menus or 24×7 plan behavior apply to Streaming Engine. Check the controls and current documentation for the product and deployment you actually use.
- Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Choose the Wowza output. In the Wowza Video YouTube workflow, select the output rendition you intend to send. Identify its codec, resolution, and frame rate before choosing the YouTube bitrate.
- Configure the encoder settings. Set CBR, a fixed 2-second keyframe interval, and the bitrate appropriate to that output’s YouTube table row. If a control is not exposed in your Wowza workflow, verify the product’s current documentation rather than assuming a hidden default.
- Enter the destination credentials. Provide the YouTube stream URL and key in Wowza’s destination settings and choose RTMPS if the workflow supports it.
- Start and verify the live stream. Confirm in YouTube Studio that the incoming stream is detected and that its resolution and frame rate match the intended output. Check the live preview and stream health before relying on it for continuous playback.
- Test continuity. Let the channel run long enough to observe the actual output and any source, network, or destination interruptions. Confirm who or what is responsible for restarting the stream if the connection fails.
What 24×7 means in Wowza Video
Wowza Video’s documented 24×7 setup describes a channel that continues until stopped manually or by a schedule. That setup does not support 4K. Those statements are specific to the described Wowza Video service setup; they should not be generalized to every Wowza product, account, or subscription. Check Wowza’s Live Stream Setup page for the applicable service details.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
Keep a 24/7 stream stable and compliant
- Match the output to a YouTube table row. A 24/7 label does not change the ingest requirements; the bitrate still needs to fit the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check the source as well as the destination. If Wowza’s incoming source stops or changes format, a correctly configured YouTube output cannot restore missing content.
- Use content you have rights to stream. Continuous playback does not exempt a channel from copyright rules. Obtain the necessary rights for music, video, artwork, and other material, and review YouTube’s policies before scheduling long-running content. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if rights or policy requirements are not met.
- Make the channel useful beyond repetition. A loop is not a guarantee of monetization. YouTube assesses channels under its monetization policies, including rules concerning repetitive or reused content; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.
- Protect the stream key. Store it only in the service or encoder that needs it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the destination configuration.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not detect an incoming stream | Incorrect stream URL or key, wrong destination, or a connection/protocol issue | Re-copy the current URL and key from YouTube Studio, verify the destination settings, and use RTMPS when supported. |
| Stream health reports an encoder or ingest problem | Output settings do not match YouTube’s accepted guidance, or the sending connection is unstable | Check CBR, the 2-second keyframe interval, and the YouTube bitrate row for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; then check the source and network path. |
| Video is choppy or drops frames | The source, Wowza output, or connection may not sustain the selected settings | Compare the source and output formats and inspect encoder and connection health. If necessary, lower the output resolution or frame rate and select the matching YouTube bitrate guidance. |
| Picture quality is poor despite a high source bitrate | The YouTube-bound rendition may use different settings from the source entering Wowza | Inspect the selected output rendition and set its bitrate according to YouTube’s table instead of relying on the input’s bitrate. |
| Stream stops during a 24×7 run | Source interruption, destination disconnect, schedule or service limit, or a product-specific 24×7 behavior | Check the source, Wowza event and schedule configuration, YouTube Studio status, and the documentation for your exact Wowza product and plan. |
| 4K is unavailable in the documented 24×7 setup | The cited Wowza Video 24×7 setup does not support 4K | Verify current Wowza Video plan and setup limits; do not assume a different Wowza product has the same limit. |
