Which one fits your workflow?
Choose Castr for a managed continuous-stream workflow
Castr is the more directly documented fit when the priority is setting up a managed YouTube destination and keeping an event running continuously, within the plan’s subscription and bandwidth conditions. Its documented YouTube options are API connection or manual entry of the YouTube streaming server and key. The setup guide also says that when using a stream key, the stream description must be edited in YouTube’s dashboard. See Castr’s YouTube connection instructions.

Castr recommends disabling destinations while the source is offline and enabling them again once the encoder source is live, to help avoid reconnection problems. That advice matters if you stop and restart your source; it does not mean a source or destination cannot fail.
Choose Wowza Streaming Engine for deployment and protocol control
Wowza makes more sense when your organization specifically needs configurable server software, deployment choice, or a supported input protocol that is important to the workflow. The protocol list alone does not prove that a particular source will work without configuration or additional processing. Validate the source format, codecs, network path, and YouTube output before committing.

YouTube describes an encoder as something that converts video into a digital format for streaming; it can be software or standalone hardware. - Identify the source protocol and codec, and check whether the platform accepts them directly or needs an encoder or transcoder.
- Decide whether you need to run your own server or prefer a managed dashboard workflow.
- Estimate continuous bitrate and monthly bandwidth, then compare that demand with the exact plan limits and billing period.
- Assign responsibility for device and network monitoring, stream-key handling, destination reconnection, and overnight response.
- Test power, internet, encoder, server, and YouTube interruption recovery in the actual setup before relying on it continuously.

Castr’s pricing page, checked October 3, 2026, displays Starter at $19.99 per month with monthly billing or $16.67 per month billed annually. It shows two streams, six destinations, and 200 GB of monthly bandwidth on monthly billing; annual billing shows three streams and a 2.4 TB annual bandwidth pool. The page notes that allocations depend on the billing period. These are plan-specific allocations, so check the current page and estimate bandwidth from your expected bitrate and viewer delivery before subscribing. Castr pricing
Castr also advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA and 24/7 support on that page. Treat the SLA as a vendor-published claim: check its contractual scope and applicability to your plan rather than using it as a comparison of real-world reliability.

How to evaluate reliability before going live
A platform’s statement about duration or an advertised SLA does not establish that your entire path—from source to YouTube—will stay uninterrupted. The encoder or source, local power, internet connection, server or managed service, and YouTube destination can each affect continuity. No head-to-head uptime result for Wowza Engine and Castr is established by the cited vendor materials.
- Ask what the commitment covers. For Castr, request the applicable SLA terms for the plan you intend to use. For either product, clarify what service or component is covered and what is excluded.
- Map the recovery chain. Write down who detects a source, network, server, or destination failure and who can restart or reconnect the affected part.
- Run a representative trial. Use the intended source, bitrate, destination, and operating setup. Test a planned source stop and restart, and verify that YouTube resumes receiving the stream as expected.
- Test realistic failures. Check what happens after an internet or power interruption and after a server or encoder restart. Confirm whether alerting reaches the person responsible for recovery.
- Verify capacity against the actual plan. For Castr, compare expected stream and bandwidth use with the selected billing period’s allocation. For Wowza, include capacity and operating costs beyond the license.
