The Unholy Death Knight changes are not simply another nerf. Blizzard’s July 31, 2026, Curse of Ula’tek PTR notes cut several sources of Unholy area damage; a later PTR update reduced the overall damage cut from 8% to 3%. In October 1 hotfix notes, Blizzard instead said it wanted to raise Unholy’s raid damage and move the Blightfall build closer to its pre-bug-fix state. The October changes do not apply in PvP.
Why the early Midnight notes looked like a nerf
In its July 31, 2026 Curse of Ula’tek PTR Development Notes, Blizzard said Unholy’s area damage was higher than intended. The proposed tuning reduced several damage-over-time effects while raising auto-attack damage and the Venomous Abyss tier set:

| Ability or effect | July 31 PTR change |
|---|---|
| Virulent Plague damage | Reduced by 10% |
| Forbidden Knowledge’s Graveyard damage | Reduced by 15% |
| Epidemic damage | Reduced by 12% |
| Auto-attack damage | Increased by 100% |
| Venomous Abyss set: Necrotic Bolt and Withering Grasp damage | Increased by 25% |
These were PTR values, not a complete accounting of Unholy’s current live tuning. They also affected different parts of the damage profile: the reductions targeted several area-damage sources, while the increases went to melee attacks and a tier set.

A subsequent PTR note changed the overall damage reduction from 8% to 3%. It also recorded a fix involving Nazgrim’s Conquest when Magus of the Dead is sacrificed for Lord of the Dead. That adjustment means the July proposal should not be read as the final form of the PTR tuning; the cited notes do not establish the precise live implementation chronology for every adjustment.

What Blizzard changed on October 1
Blizzard’s October 1, 2026 hotfix notes took a different direction. The developer note said, “We’re looking to increase Unholy Death Knight’s damage output in raid,” and added that Blizzard was aiming to bring the Blightfall build closer to where it was before bug fixes made it no longer viable. The listed Unholy changes are excluded from PvP combat.
| October hotfix change | New value | Previous value |
|---|---|---|
| Scourging: plague eruption thresholds | 65% / 100% | 50% / 70% |
| Blightfall: damage from remaining plague damage | 200% | 100% |
| San’layn’s Infliction of Sorrow: Vampiric Strike plague eruption effectiveness | 75% increased effectiveness | 30% increased effectiveness |
| Thrill of Blood: Dread Plague damage increase | 20% | 10% |
| Frenzied Bloodthirst | Death Coil and Death Strike damage increase by 5% per stack | Not stated in the October 1 notes |
The first four entries list a new and previous value in the hotfix. Frenzied Bloodthirst’s change is stated as 5% per stack; the notes do not give a prior value for comparison.

How the September Blightfall fix fits in
Blizzard’s hotfix archive separately records a September 23 fix for Blightfall dealing less damage as more time passed after a plague was applied. The October note’s aim to move the build toward its pre-bug-fix state gives context for the later tuning, but the September fix itself should not be mistaken for a performance restoration.

Not exactly. The July PTR changes addressed area damage and included both reductions and increases. The later PTR note softened the overall reduction, and the October hotfix increased several effects tied to Unholy’s raid output and Blightfall. These are changes to different abilities, builds, and damage contexts, so their percentages cannot be added or compared as a net-DPS calculation.
