Consider World of Warcraft: Forever if you want Blizzard’s announced, evolving take on the original world—but it is not scheduled to launch until November 4, 2026. “Classic” also includes other modes: the 20th Anniversary PvE and PvP realms have progressed to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, while Hardcore and Season of Discovery have distinct rules and content.
First, what does “WoW Classic” mean?
Blizzard uses Classic as an umbrella for several versions, not one fixed game. Its Classic product hub lists Classic Hardcore, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition, Mists of Pandaria Classic, and Season of Discovery alongside other Classic access. Blizzard also says progress on a Classic character does not carry over to other Classic versions.

For a direct comparison with Forever, the closest counterpart is Classic Era: it preserves the original-era content and does not advance into expansions. The Anniversary PvE and PvP realms are a different path; they have moved into Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. Those distinctions matter more than the broad “Classic” label.
What is WoW Forever?
Blizzard announced World of Warcraft: Forever on September 12, 2026 as “a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW.” Its announced setting is after the events of Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core. Players will return to the original continents, adventure to level 60, and continue with new stories, experiences, and updates inspired by player feedback, according to Blizzard’s announcement.

- Great product!
Blizzard scheduled a global launch for November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PDT, and said beta would begin September 17. As of October 4, 2026, Forever is still upcoming—not a live game you can compare through play. The announcement describes a familiar but fresh experience; it does not establish that Forever is identical to the 2004 release or Classic Era, nor does it detail every system or future update.
How Forever, Classic Era, and Anniversary realms differ
| Option | Content path | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| World of Warcraft: Forever | Blizzard announced new stories, experiences, and updates in the original world, with adventure to level 60. | Scheduled for November 4, 2026; the announcement sets a direction and date, not a hands-on basis for judging systems or quality. |
| Classic Era | Latest phase of original WoW content; no progression into expansion content. | Best fit if you want to remain in original-era WoW. Blizzard explained this distinction in its 2021 transition article. |
| 20th Anniversary PvE/PvP realms | Progressed to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary. | These launched as fresh realms with quality-of-life features and a stated progression plan; Blizzard’s February 2026 announcement reports Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary as live. Their original fresh-start condition should not be taken as a claim about the economy or population today. |
| Anniversary Hardcore | Progresses through Classic Era content, not Burning Crusade Classic. | Hardcore adds a consequential death rule: a character that dies on a Hardcore realm cannot be resurrected there. Blizzard’s 2023 notes say a dead character could be moved to a non-Hardcore Era realm. |
Which one should you play?
Choose Classic Era for an original-era destination
Pick Classic Era if your priority is original WoW content that does not roll forward into an expansion. It is the clearest match for “I want to stay in the original game’s era,” rather than follow an announced sequence of new stories and updates.

Wait for Forever if the evolving version is the point
Forever is the option to watch if you want Blizzard’s announced permanent experience in the original world with new content over time. Because it has not launched as of October 4, its population, class balance, endgame, queue times, addons, social experience, server health, and monetization cannot yet be responsibly compared with live Classic options.

If you mean the 20th Anniversary PvE or PvP realms, understand that their current progression is Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, not a fresh Classic Era start. The transfer opportunity to move Anniversary characters to Classic Era ended January 12, 2026; Blizzard said characters left on Anniversary realms continued to Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary.

- World of Warcraft Game
- Includes Expansion Packs: The Burnings Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria
- 30 days of free game time included
- Includes levels 1 through 90
- Subscription, Internet connection, and Battle.net registration required
Treat Hardcore as a ruleset choice, not a PvP toggle
Hardcore is appropriate only if the death rule is part of the appeal. It changes the stakes of play and is separate from choosing between PvE and PvP on Anniversary realms.

Blizzard’s Classic product hub says an active WoW subscription or game time provides access to the listed Classic versions. The available announcement does not establish whether Forever will have those same access terms. Check Blizzard’s launch details before assuming Forever is included or requires a separate purchase.
