If your 4K TV shows 1080p, the problem is usually somewhere in the signal path—not necessarily the screen. Check that the source, the specific HDMI input, any receiver or soundbar, and the cable all support the format you want. Then confirm the source is sending 4K and that the program or stream is actually available in 4K.
A 4K Ultra HD image is 3,840 × 2,160 pixels, but owning a TV with that panel does not guarantee every connected device or video will use that resolution. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time.

1. Trace the complete signal path
Write down the TV model, source device and model, HDMI input number, and any equipment between them, such as an AV receiver, soundbar, or HDMI switch. Check the manuals or specifications for the exact port in use: HDMI inputs on the same TV may not have identical 4K frame-rate or HDCP capabilities. Some older 4K TVs, for example, support HDCP 2.2 on only one HDMI input.

Roku’s setup guidance says a device chain missing HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 can limit protected 4K playback to a lower resolution, such as 720p or 1080p. See Roku’s 4K setup guidance. The exact requirements depend on the format and equipment, so verify them for your models rather than assuming every 4K signal needs the same configuration.

2. Confirm the source and video are set to 4K
On the streaming box, game console, or other source, open its display or video settings and choose Auto or a 4K output mode supported by the TV and connection. The TV’s information display may show the current input signal; the source’s settings can also show what output it has selected.
For streaming, check that the specific title is offered in 4K or UHD, that your service plan includes 4K when the service requires it, and that the app’s playback-quality setting is not limiting resolution. A 4K panel cannot turn a 1080p program or a source set to 1080p into a 4K input signal. Service catalogs, plan rules, and network requirements vary by service and region; Sony outlines these variables in its 4K HDR support guidance.

3. Enable the high-bandwidth setting for the HDMI input in use
Many TVs have an enhanced or high-bandwidth mode that must be turned on separately for the port connected to the source. Find the setting for that input in the TV’s menus or model-specific manual. Names differ by brand and model, and the menu path can change with software updates.

Enhanced mode is not automatically the right choice for every setup. It can cause picture or sound problems when connected equipment does not support the selected format. Sony’s model-family help guide describes when to use Enhanced format; if enabling it breaks the connection, return that input to Standard and check the compatibility of the entire chain.
4. Test the source directly on the TV
Temporarily remove the AV receiver, soundbar, or HDMI switch from the path. Connect the source directly to a TV port verified to support the desired 4K format, using a known-good cable, then check the signal again.

- If 4K works directly, inspect the intermediary’s HDMI input and output specifications, supported HDCP version, and any enhanced or 4K signal setting. Confirm the source is connected to the intermediary’s compatible input and the TV to its compatible output.
- If 4K still does not work directly, focus on the TV port, source output, content, and cable rather than replacing the intermediary.

5. Check the cable only when the other links are verified
A cable is worth testing if the source, TV port, and settings support the target signal but the connection still fails or drops. Try a known-good cable rated for the resolution, frame rate, and HDR format in use. Sony specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable supporting 18 Gbps for the high-quality 4K formats covered in its help guide. Roku advises an appropriately rated Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable for supported 4K HDR configurations in its 4K HDR setup guidance.

Older or unlabeled cables may not handle every 4K HDR configuration, especially at higher frame rates. A cable cannot compensate for an unsupported HDMI port, missing HDCP capability, incompatible receiver, non-4K video, or source configured to output a lower resolution. A Roku streaming stick that plugs directly into the TV does not need a separate HDMI cable.
6. Update devices and recover from a failed setting
After changing HDMI or display settings, install available software updates for the TV and source, then restart both devices. Roku notes that a TV software update may be needed for HDR behavior and includes updates and restarts in its 4K HDR troubleshooting guidance.
If changing the source’s output or the TV’s input mode leaves a gray or blank picture, use the device’s recovery or display-reset procedure. For a Roku player, Roku suggests trying 4K or 1080p instead of 4K HDR, then checking compatibility and cable settings. If Sony Enhanced format causes signal trouble, switch that input back to Standard. Once the picture returns, verify port and intermediary support before trying the higher-bandwidth mode again.
7. When to contact support
If the source is connected directly to a verified capable TV port, the content and output are set for 4K, and a known-good cable still does not produce a 4K signal, consult support for both devices using their exact model numbers. Port capabilities, software menus, and supported formats vary by model; the manuals can establish whether that particular combination should work.
