Would You Pay $39? A Presale Validation Postmortem

A commenter spotted why a workflow-interest question could not validate willingness to pay. Chen’s proposed $39 presale redesign is clearer, but its results are still unknown.

A workflow-interest question did not tell Lu Chen whether anyone would pay $39 for his digital product. A commenter spotted the mismatch before Chen repeated the test; Chen’s proposed redesign asks about payment directly, but its results were not yet available.

What Chen’s first validation gate actually measured

Chen described a 48-hour test for a $39 digital product. His original rule was to proceed only if it received ten reservations during that window. He reported zero reservations. These are figures from one author-reported experiment, not an independently audited market study or a validated benchmark.

The question shown to respondents was whether the product would change their workflow. That can reveal whether an idea sounds useful, but it does not directly answer the decision Chen needed to make: would people pay $39 for it?

As Chen put it, “The design was fine. What I shipped was not the design.” The design depended on reservations; the question actually asked measured stated interest in a possible workflow change.

How a commenter found the mismatch

In his DEV Community account, Chen credits commenter “dailmarket,” whom he describes as running a marketplace for agent services, with pointing out that the form asked whether the product would change respondents’ workflow while the decision was whether they would pay $39. Chen agreed that the question captured interest rather than payment intent.

That distinction matters whenever a validation result controls whether you build. A positive answer to “would this change your workflow?” is not the same signal as a reservation, purchase, or other commitment at the price you intend to charge. If the decision is about willingness to pay, the question needs to make price and payment the subject.

What the proposed redesign changes

Chen’s next version is a proposal, not a reported result. It asks directly, “would you pay $39 for this,” routes a yes into a pay-now stage, and retains a cutoff of fewer than ten price-yeses within 48 hours as the kill rule. The $39 price and ten-yes threshold are Chen’s choices for this test, not general recommendations.

Gate Signal Decision rule Status
Original Whether the product would change respondents’ workflow Ten reservations within 48 hours to proceed; Chen reported zero Reported by Chen
Redesigned Whether respondents would pay $39, followed by a pay-now step for a yes Fewer than ten direct price-yeses within 48 hours means stop Proposed; results not yet reported

A direct price question improves alignment between the question and the decision, but a stated yes is still not equivalent to completed payment. The pay-now step is important because it gives an affirmative response a path toward stronger commitment. The account does not report whether respondents completed that step or how Chen would treat a yes that did not become a payment.

Why Chen wants to test question order

Chen also proposed splitting respondents: half would see the price question first, and the other half would encounter the question in the alternate order. He described the idea as: “split the respondents, give half the price question first, and see if the numbers differ between the two groups.” This is Chen’s proposed order-effect check; dailmarket is not credited with suggesting it.

The point is to see whether the order of questions changes the answers. For the comparison to be interpretable, the groups should differ in question order rather than in other material ways, and Chen would need enough responses to compare them meaningfully. The account gives no sample size or results, and no controlled evidence about question-order effects is provided there. The proposed split therefore identifies a possible source of bias; it does not establish that order changed responses.

What the original zero does—and does not—show

Chen says the original gate produced no reservations, so both the original and redesigned rules would drop the product on that reported outcome. The flaw matters most as a counterfactual: if workflow-interest responses had been positive enough to prompt building, they still would not have shown that people would pay $39.

This is a useful distinction for anyone asking, “How do I validate a product idea before I build it?” Start with the behavior that would justify building, then choose a test that observes that behavior as directly as practical. A favorable opinion can help you understand perceived usefulness; it cannot stand in for demand at a particular price.

How to apply the lesson without treating Chen’s cutoff as a rule

  1. Write down the decision first. Specify what evidence would make you build, revise, or stop. If your decision depends on paid demand, do not use a question about general usefulness as its only measure.
  2. Match the test to the commitment. Ask about the real offer and price. Where appropriate, provide a route to reserve or pay, and distinguish a stated yes from a completed transaction in your records.
  3. Set the window and threshold for your own test. Chen used 48 hours and ten responses for his experiment. His account does not show that those values are statistically established or suitable for another product.
  4. Check whether the survey itself changes the answer. If question order could shape responses, plan a comparison in advance and record which order each respondent saw. Do not claim an effect unless the results support it.
  5. Report status honestly. Separate proposed methods from completed tests, and do not describe a redesigned gate as successful before its outcome is known.

What broader presale advice can support

Jay Clouse’s Creator Science account describes preselling a course before production and later emphasizes validating the underlying problem. That is another creator’s personal experience, not controlled proof that presales always work or that a particular threshold guarantees demand. Read it as a complementary reminder: test both whether the problem matters and whether the proposed solution can earn a real commitment.

Chen’s article says, “The redesigned gate runs on the next validation round.” It does not provide that round’s outcome. Until results are reported, the redesign is a clearer proposed measurement—not evidence that conversion improved.
