An S corporation can apply for business credit cards, but its S tax election does not create a special card or guarantee approval. The key questions are which legal entity is applying, whether the issuer requires an owner’s personal guarantee, and whether the card’s payment and expense-management terms suit the company.
What S corporation status means for a card application
An S corporation is a corporation that elects pass-through federal tax treatment. The IRS explains that S corporations generally pass income, losses, deductions, and credits through to shareholders, subject to exceptions. The election describes tax treatment; it is not itself a separate legal business form. The company may be a corporation or an eligible LLC, so use the company’s actual legal entity and tax identification details when applying.

The S election does not set an issuer’s approval standard. An issuer may assess the company’s revenue, time in business, credit history, and broader financial profile, as well as the personal credit of an owner who applies or guarantees the account. Requirements vary by issuer and card. Review the application criteria and card agreement before submitting an application.

Those tax rules are separate from a card issuer’s underwriting criteria. See the IRS overview of S corporations.

Will you need an EIN and a personal guarantee?
Many small-business card applications ask for the company’s legal name, EIN, address, industry, years in business, employee count, and revenue. They may also request the applicant’s personal identifying and credit information. An EIN identifies the business; it does not, by itself, establish that an issuer will approve the business without evaluating an owner or requiring a guarantee.
A personal guarantee is a separate contractual promise. If you sign one, you may be personally responsible for covered card debt if the company does not pay. The company’s corporate status does not cancel that promise. Confirm who is liable under the specific agreement—not just how the card is marketed.

EIN-only options exist but are less common among small-business cards. Some corporate cards may assess the company’s financial position and place liability on the business rather than requiring an owner’s personal guarantee. They may also have stricter financial qualifications or require balances to be paid in full each cycle. Check both the liability terms and whether the product is a revolving credit card or a charge card.

Small-business card or corporate card?
| What to compare | Small-business card | Corporate card |
|---|---|---|
| Typical underwriting focus | Business details and, often, an owner’s personal credit or guarantee; issuer requirements vary. | May emphasize the company’s financials, cash, revenue, banking relationship, or spending profile; qualifications vary. |
| Liability | A personal guarantee is common; verify the card agreement for who is responsible. | May place liability on the company, but confirm the agreement and any individual obligations. |
| Payment structure | Check whether the balance can revolve and what interest and late-payment terms apply. | Some are charge cards requiring payment in full each cycle; verify the product’s terms. |
| Employee and expense controls | Compare additional cards, limits, transaction visibility, and available controls. | May offer centralized billing and expense-management features; confirm what is included. |
This is a general distinction, not a promise about every product. Issuers define their own eligibility, liability, and payment terms. For a financially established company, a corporate card may be worth considering if avoiding an owner guarantee is a priority, but the company should confirm qualification requirements and exactly who bears liability.

How to compare cards for your company
Compare the same criteria across each card you are considering, and assess them against actual company spending and cash flow.
- Eligibility: Does the issuer accept the company’s legal entity and size? Which business and personal financial details must be supplied?
- Liability: Is a personal guarantee required? Who is contractually responsible if the balance is unpaid?
- Payment terms: Can the company carry a balance, or is payment due in full each cycle? Check due dates and late-payment consequences.
- Fees: Review the annual fee and other applicable charges against expected use.
- Rewards: Match reward categories to real spending—such as travel, advertising, software, shipping, or office purchases. A generous rate in a category the company rarely uses may have little practical value.
- Employee management: Check whether employee cards are available, whether individual limits or merchant controls can be set, and how transactions are reported.
- Bookkeeping: Look for receipt capture, transaction exports, categorization, and compatibility with the company’s accounting workflow.
Keep card records separate from tax treatment
Paying with a business card does not automatically make a purchase deductible. Keep receipts and record the business purpose, and distinguish company expenses from personal or mixed-use charges. A card transaction is evidence of payment, not proof that an expense qualifies for a deduction.
