World War Z: Aftermath is a good fit if you want repeatable online horde combat, a broad set of campaign episodes and progression across multiple classes. Its strongest case is four-player online co-op with cross-play among supported PC, PlayStation and Xbox systems. It is a weaker fit for couch co-op, Nintendo Switch players seeking feature parity, or anyone buying a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One copy mainly for Horde Mode XL.
What you get in World War Z: Aftermath
Aftermath expands the co-op shooter World War Z with campaign episodes, class and weapon progression, melee options, optional first-person play and additional modes. Focus Entertainment’s game page describes the package and its features.

Campaign episodes across seven locations
The package includes the episodes from World War Z: Game of the Year Edition, set in New York, Moscow, Marseille, Jerusalem and Tokyo, as well as the Rome and Kamchatka stories. That range gives groups more campaign settings to work through than a single-location horde shooter.

Classes, weapons and combat options
There are eight classes, including Vanguard, with class-specific perks and weapon customization. The melee system includes two-handed and dual-wield weapons, and players can switch to an optional first-person view. These options provide different ways to approach combat, though the available sources do not establish which class or style is strongest.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as both new and returning characters as you take the fight to the undead with a brutal new melee system, decimating zekes with unique moves, perks and dual Wield weapon options like the sickle and cleaver. Fend off new undead monstrosities.
- The Next generation of the zombie Swarm: play in glorious 4k|60 FPS. Endure endless waves of increasingly difficult zombies in the new horde mode XL game mode, featuring hundreds more zombies on screen than ever before possible.
- Deep progression and a new perspective: experience a heart-pounding new perspective with aftermath's immersive new first-person mode option.
- Level up eight unique classes: the gunslinger, hellraiser, Slasher, medic, fixer, exterminator, dronemaster, and all-new Vanguard class; each with their own perks and play styles.
- Customize your weapons to survive any challenge, and conquer new daily missions with special modifiers for bonus rewards.
How co-op and cross-play work
The central appeal is four-player online co-op. Saber Interactive describes cross-play across PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and says solo players can team up with AI companions. The boundaries matter: cross-play does not include Nintendo Switch, and Aftermath has no local split-screen or couch co-op. Check Saber’s World War Z FAQ against the exact platform editions your group owns.
- Playing with friends online: PC, PlayStation and Xbox players can use cross-play, subject to the supported versions listed by Saber.
- Playing alone: AI teammates offer a solo route; this is not the same as playing with human teammates.
- Playing on one couch: Local co-op is not available, so each human player needs an online setup.
- Including a Switch player: Switch cross-play with other platforms is unavailable, according to Saber’s FAQ.
Which modes are available on each platform?
Horde Mode XL is a notable extra, but availability depends on platform generation. Saber lists standard Horde Mode on PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox consoles, while XL is listed only for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

These availability details come from Saber’s support FAQ. If XL is the reason you are buying, confirm the edition and platform listing before paying rather than assuming every version has it.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecent updates and Switch support
Saber’s October 5, 2026 patch notes add a Walking Dead episode to Extinction mode, two weapons, new perks and mutators, portrait frames and weekly challenge setups. Saber describes the new gameplay content as free; the five-weapon Valhalla Raider skin pack is separate cosmetic content.
Rank #3
Switch requires particular caution. Saber’s FAQ discusses the original World War Z on Nintendo Switch, says it cannot cross-play with other platforms, and states that updates for the Switch version are not currently planned. It does not establish Switch feature parity with Aftermath on PC, PlayStation or Xbox. If ongoing updates or the Aftermath feature set are important, do not treat the Switch version as equivalent.
Progression, saves and online requirements
Cross-progression is not supported. Saber says PROS allows a one-time save transfer; that is a single transfer, not a continuously synchronized account shared across platforms. Anyone changing platforms should check eligibility and transfer details in Saber’s FAQ before making the move.

Saber’s FAQ also addresses whether a paid subscription is needed for online play. Because console online-service requirements can depend on platform and account circumstances, check the relevant console store and current FAQ for the edition you plan to use.
Check the edition before buying
There is a difference between buying the full game and buying an upgrade. Steam’s Aftermath Upgrade listing is DLC and requires the base World War Z game. Saber says physical copies are available, but the precise edition and contents depend on the platform and regional listing.
Best Value
- 31079403001
- Confirm that the listing is the full game if you do not already own the base game.
- If you own the base game on Steam, verify that the upgrade listing matches your intended purchase.
- Check the platform generation and mode availability, especially if Horde Mode XL is a priority.
- Verify the current regional store listing, edition and price; these details can change.
PC requirements and content rating
Steam lists a 50 GB storage requirement and minimum specifications of 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 and DirectX 11. Steam also states that its client has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024, so the game’s listed minimum operating system does not by itself guarantee that the current Steam client will run on that system. Check the live Steam listing for current requirements before installing.
Steam’s developer-provided content description warns of frequent violence or gore. Its store page showed 81% positive from 172 reviews when accessed on October 7, 2026; this is a changing user-review snapshot for the Aftermath Upgrade listing, not a critic score or an overall quality measure.
