Yes. JSZip can create or read ZIP archives in a browser without uploading their contents to a server. Add browser File objects directly, generate a Blob, and offer it as a download. The archive is assembled in browser memory, however, so this approach is not an unlimited-size or universal ZIP solution.
Create a ZIP from files selected in the browser
JSZip creates, reads, and edits ZIP archives in JavaScript. Its file API accepts browser File and Blob objects directly, so a simple file-input workflow does not need to convert each file with FileReader first. The following illustrative pattern uses file-saver to trigger a download:

If names can collide, decide how to handle duplicates before adding them; otherwise, one entry may replace another. For directories or organized output, use archive paths such as photos/image.jpg as the entry names.

generateAsync returns a Promise, so await it and handle failures in the calling UI. The project guide also demonstrates a Blob URL download route; use a current download approach suitable for your supported browsers rather than relying on the guide’s historical browser-specific data-URI advice. JSZip’s documented file inputs include strings, ArrayBuffer, Uint8Array, Promises, and Node streams; streams apply to Node, not browser file selection. See the file data API and write ZIP guide.

Choose the output type and compression
The output type is required in generateAsync. Choose the representation based on what the browser should do next:

JSZip’s documented default compression is STORE, which does not compress file contents. To request compression, use DEFLATE, for example zip.generateAsync({ type: "blob", compression: "DEFLATE" }). Compression can reduce archive size for compressible content but uses processing time; it may offer little benefit for data that is already compressed. There is no documented performance figure that predicts the result for every browser and file set. Check JSZip’s generation options and output support against your target runtime.

Read an archive and extract selected entries
To read a user-selected ZIP, pass its File to loadAsync, inspect the entries, and extract the chosen entry with its asynchronous API. For example:

}Wrap calls in error handling: loading can reject for unsupported or invalid archive data, and an entry may not exist or may be a directory. Choose an extraction format that fits the next step; for text, request text only when the content’s encoding is appropriate. The loadAsync API and entry async API describe the available operations.

Do not treat archive paths or contents as inherently safe. If your application writes extracted files to a location or renders their contents, validate names and handle them as untrusted input.

Memory and responsiveness
JSZip documents that generateAsync and asynchronous loading hold the complete result in memory. The asynchronous API avoids the browser-blocking behavior associated with a synchronous operation, but it does not remove memory pressure. Actual usage depends on source files, intermediate representations, output size, browser, and device; the documentation does not establish a universal safe archive-size ceiling. Large inputs can still make a tab sluggish or exhaust available memory. Where practical, use binary types such as Uint8Array or ArrayBuffer rather than adding unnecessary string conversions, since JavaScript strings use UTF-16. ZIP variants and round trips
JSZip supports classic ZIP files, but encrypted and multi-volume archives are unsupported and cause loadAsync() to fail. ZIP64 can be loaded only within the project’s stated limitations, including JavaScript number precision and 32-bit bitwise operations; do not assume arbitrary ZIP64-scale support. Reading an archive and generating it again also does not preserve the original bytes exactly: JSZip notes that metadata may be discarded and entries such as subfolders may be added.

UTF-8 is JSZip’s native encoding path. ZIP archives may not identify the encoding used for names, so filenames encoded another way can appear as mojibake unless your application knows the encoding and supplies a suitable custom decoder. For non-UTF-8 file contents, extract bytes and decode them with an encoding-aware tool rather than assuming they are UTF-8. The encoding notes explain the constraint.

The JSZip repository states that the project is dual-licensed under MIT and GPLv3. Review the applicable license against your project’s distribution and legal requirements. The project documentation is rolling rather than tied here to a confirmed release number, so pin the dependency version you use and check that version’s API and license terms.
