Before installing a Windows feature update, check that it is offered for your PC, make sure important files are backed up, and review available storage. Use Windows Update as the default installation route; avoid forcing an update that Windows has not offered for your device.
1. Check which update you are preparing for
A feature update is a larger Windows release that adds capabilities. It is different from a quality update, which delivers smaller, more frequent fixes. Start by opening Windows Update and noting the version or upgrade it offers. Menu labels vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so follow the instructions for the version currently installed on your PC.

For a Windows 11 upgrade, check Microsoft’s getting-ready guidance and Windows 11 system requirements. Requirements cover items such as the processor, memory, storage, graphics, display, and setup. Meeting minimum requirements alone does not mean every particular update is ready for every device.

2. Follow Windows Update’s readiness signal
Microsoft says Windows Update indicates that a Windows 11 upgrade is ready after it has been tested and validated for the specific PC. Check Settings > Windows Update for the offer and any compatibility messages. If the upgrade is not offered, consult Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance rather than using an unofficial bypass or trying to force installation.

If you are seeking a smaller quality update rather than a feature update, use Windows Update in Settings. Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant instructions direct users looking for quality updates to Windows Update instead.
3. Back up files you cannot replace
Microsoft recommends backing up files before installing Windows 11 or a new Windows version. Save important documents, photos, and other irreplaceable files to a backup location you can access, such as an existing OneDrive backup or an external storage device. Then verify that the files are present and openable. You do not need to buy another drive if you already have a suitable, working backup.

A backup is a precaution, not a claim that a feature update normally deletes personal files. The useful test is whether you could retrieve what matters if something went wrong.
4. Check internal storage and clean up safely
Open Start > Settings > System > Storage to review free space. Microsoft’s current storage guidance says feature updates typically require 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space, but actual needs vary with the update path, optional features or languages, installed content, and other updates. Treat this as a planning range, not a guarantee for your PC.

Use Windows’ built-in tools before considering other approaches:
- Cleanup recommendations: Review suggested categories and select what you are comfortable removing. Check carefully before deleting Downloads or large personal files.
- Storage Sense: Use it to automatically remove eligible temporary files. Review its settings so its cleanup behavior is clear to you.
Do not manually delete Windows system folders to make room. If Windows still reports insufficient space, its cleanup and update prompts are safer guides than removing files whose purpose is unclear.

When external storage may help
If Windows presents a Fix issues option because the PC lacks space, its update workflow may let you temporarily use an external storage device. Microsoft says that device needs at least 10 GB free, and an internet connection is required. Back up important files before using the device for this workflow. Windows may still ask you to free additional space on the PC, so external storage does not guarantee that no internal space will be needed. This is a contingency, not a general reason to buy a drive.
5. Choose a time when interruption is manageable
Windows 11 downloading and installing usually takes longer than a typical Windows 10 feature update, but Microsoft does not give one duration that applies to every PC. The time depends on the device, network, storage, and update path. You can use the PC while Windows 11 downloads, then schedule installation for a time when you do not need it. Save your work and avoid starting when you need the computer immediately.

6. Use the installation route that fits your situation

For most people preparing for a feature update, the normal Windows Update offer is the appropriate starting point. Use a manual tool only when its documented use case matches your PC and situation.
Windows 10 support context
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, it no longer provides free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This does not mean every Windows 10 PC has the same eligibility or upgrade path; check the specific device and target version in Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade FAQ.
