Workflow Revision Retries: How to Target a Draft Without Advancing the Queue

A targeted revision mode loads a named draft directly instead of polling for the next queue item, then reuses the normal validation and publishing path.

To retry one failed draft without consuming a different queue item, add a targeted revision path that loads the named draft directly and sends it through the same validation and publishing logic as normal processing. Keep queue polling separate: the revision path should not ask the queue for its next item.

Why a normal queue retry can process the wrong draft

A queue-driven worker typically selects the next available record before validating, transforming, and publishing it. If a draft already processed needs repair, simply running that consumer again may select a newer item rather than the failed draft. A retry needs to identify the intended artifact explicitly, not merely start the consumer again.

Uray Febri’s September 30, 2026, DEV Community article proposes separating queue polling from the processing engine and providing distinct queue-consume and targeted-revision invocation paths. This is an architectural proposal, not a documented deployment or independently tested implementation.

How queue and revision modes differ

Mode How it selects input Queue interaction Processing logic
Queue consumption Requests the next available queue item. Reads from the queue; normal consumer behavior may advance its position. Can use the shared validation and publishing path.
Targeted revision Loads a draft identified by an explicit resource ID or file path. Does not query the upstream queue, so the proposed design leaves its pointers untouched. Uses the same validation and publishing path as queue consumption.

The comparison describes the proposed design; the source reports no measured difference in performance, reliability, or cost.

What a targeted revision run should do

  1. Load the requested draft. Resolve the provided identifier or path directly from its repository or object store, rather than selecting an item from the queue.
  2. Validate it. Run the usual syntactic and semantic checks against that draft.
  3. Transform its metadata. Apply the required changes without generating new sequential IDs as a side effect of retrying.
  4. Publish the result. Send the rendered artifact to the publishing destination through the common processing logic.

Sharing validation and rendering helps keep the two invocation paths consistent when that logic is independent of queue state. It is a design rationale, not proof that a particular implementation is idempotent or produces identical results under every condition.

How to expose the two invocation paths

The article illustrates the interface with these command shapes:

  • --mode=consume --queue=main for ordinary queue consumption.
  • --mode=revision --target=drafts/SRC-WFREVONLY27.md for a targeted run.

These are illustrative examples, not verified commands for an available package or product. The article describes a Python pipeline but does not identify a publicly available system to which the commands can be applied.

How to handle failure and verify the result

In the proposed behavior, a validation failure should report the error without changing queue offsets or leaving orphaned downstream records. Those outcomes are recommendations in the article, not confirmed guarantees for a real implementation. After a successful targeted run, inspect the modified artifact in a local build directory or preview environment to confirm the intended draft was updated.

Implementation checks

  • Require an explicit target for revision mode; do not let it fall back to fetching the next queue record.
  • Keep queue selection outside the shared validation and publishing engine.
  • Ensure metadata transformation does not create new sequential IDs just because the draft is being retried.
  • On validation errors, report the failure and avoid queue-state changes in the revision path.
  • Verify the resulting artifact itself in a build or preview environment.
