If your Samsung Galaxy Tab is frozen, first remove anything that may be interfering with the screen, then force-restart it by holding Power and Volume down together for more than seven seconds, until it reboots. This restart is not a factory reset and is the appropriate first step for an unresponsive tablet.
First identify what is frozen
“Frozen” can describe a touchscreen that ignores taps, an app that stops responding, or a tablet that will not turn off or start. These problems can overlap, but a screen-input issue is not necessarily a power failure. Start with the low-risk checks below before moving to software troubleshooting or repair.

Rule out screen interference
- Remove the case, screen protector, or accessory if it could press against the display.
- Make sure the screen is clean and dry.
Samsung notes that a slow or unresponsive screen can involve an app or physical screen damage, and recommends removing accessories that may touch the display. If the screen is visibly damaged, skip repeated software attempts and arrange a professional inspection. Force-restart the Galaxy Tab
- Press and hold the Power button and Volume down button at the same time.
- Keep holding until the tablet reboots. Samsung UK specifies more than seven seconds; Samsung US guidance describes a 7–10-second hold.
- If that combination does not work, check the instructions for your exact tablet model. Samsung guidance varies: another US troubleshooting page says the hold may take up to 60 seconds before shutdown. Samsung US: device will not power on or off
A force restart is different from a factory reset: it restarts the tablet, while a factory data reset erases its data. Button behavior can vary by model and software, so use model-specific Samsung guidance if the usual combination does not produce a reboot. If freezes keep happening, investigate software
If the tablet restarts but becomes unresponsive again, use the following checks when it is usable. They help distinguish a recurring software issue from a one-time lockup.
Check for updates and available storage
Install available software updates and check whether storage or memory is constrained. Samsung includes updates and storage or memory checks in its guidance for persistent slowness or freezing. Use Safe mode to check for an app problem
If you can operate the tablet, start it in Safe mode using Samsung’s instructions for your model. If it works normally in Safe mode, a downloaded or recently updated app may be involved. Remove apps installed or updated shortly before the freezes began, one at a time; restart and check the tablet after each removal. Samsung US: use Safe mode on a Galaxy device
Try charging only if power may be the issue
If the button-based restart fails and the battery may be depleted, Samsung UK’s troubleshooting guidance suggests letting the battery run down, charging the tablet for 30 minutes, and then trying to turn it on. Use a factory reset only as a later step
A factory reset may be considered if the tablet remains unresponsive after less disruptive troubleshooting, but it is not another kind of restart. Samsung says a factory data reset restores original settings and completely erases the device’s data. Back up important files first if you can access them, and follow the reset instructions for your model; menu names and availability vary. Contact Samsung support or an authorized repair provider if the tablet still will not restart, freezes continue after software troubleshooting, or you suspect physical damage. For a damaged display, Samsung recommends professional inspection. The correct support route depends on your location and exact model.
