Reuters photographer Lisi Niesner made the image on January 6, 2026. Reuters describes it as workers laying a 110 kV cable in Berlin during the blackout. What happened to the power cables near Lichterfelde?
On January 3, 2026, a fire at a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal near the Lichterfelde power plant damaged multiple high-voltage cables. The Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises reported that 45,400 households and 2,200 commercial customers were initially affected across Nikolassee, Zehlendorf, Wannsee, and Lichterfelde. The department said the cause was under investigation; Reuters described the fire as a suspected arson attack, not a settled criminal finding. Berlin Senate Department
How long did the Berlin blackout last?
Stromnetz Berlin said on January 8 that power had been restored to all affected households and commercial customers after around 100 hours. Reconnection took place in stages: the operator later reported that a first temporary line restored the southwest Berlin supply on January 7. Why did work continue after customers had power?
Restoring customer supply was not the same as completing permanent repairs. On January 10, Stromnetz Berlin said a second temporary high-voltage line was operating to provide additional security. The two temporary facilities were to remain until the original network status could be restored, a process the operator expected to take months. Stromnetz Berlin: second temporary line in operation
How this outage differs from the September 2025 Berlin blackout
The January 2026 outage was in southwest Berlin, near Lichterfelde. It should not be confused with the separate September 2025 incident in Johannisthal, southeast Berlin. Stromnetz Berlin said that earlier attack damaged two 110 kV lines and affected customers were restored after about 60 hours. That duration applies to the September event, not the January outage.
