The Grant Sinclair GamerCard is a remarkably thin Raspberry Pi handheld with a sharp square screen, but its unusual controls and uneven setup experience make it a niche buy rather than an easy recommendation for retro gaming. It is most compelling if you want a pocketable platform for PICO-8, coding, or hardware tinkering; if you mainly want dependable emulation with familiar controls, the reviews suggest looking elsewhere.
What the GamerCard is—and what it is not
GamerCard is a stacked-PCB handheld built around Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W hardware and a custom RP3A0 system-in-package. The manufacturer positions it as a compact device for games and maker projects, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a Qwiic connector for expansion. Its unusual proportions and hardware are real strengths, but they do not make it a conventional plug-and-play retro console.

The manufacturer says it can run thousands of games, but that is a marketing claim, not an independently verified compatibility list. The hands-on reviews found that results varied with the platform, game, configuration, and software used.

What is good about the GamerCard?
It is unusually portable
At 6.5 mm thick and 105 g, the GamerCard is genuinely pocket-friendly by handheld standards. Its narrow, flat construction is a more distinctive selling point than raw processing power. Creative Bloq’s August 12, 2026 review found the device appealing to carry, while WIRED also praised its small form factor.
The square screen suits PICO-8
The 720 × 720 display is the device’s clearest practical strength. Creative Bloq found it crisp and especially well matched to PICO-8’s square presentation. That same aspect ratio is less naturally suited to many older systems that were designed for wider or taller screens, so scaling can become an issue rather than an advantage depending on what you play.

It offers room to experiment
Raspberry Pi hardware, a Qwiic connector, and removable storage give the GamerCard more maker appeal than a sealed retro console. For someone interested in learning, building, or adapting software, those features may be part of the point. They are less valuable to someone who expects to turn it on and play without configuration.

How good are the GamerCard controls?
The controls are the main reason to hesitate. The GamerCard uses silicone-disc inputs rather than a conventional D-pad. WIRED reported inconsistent, unresponsive input; Time Extension found the discs stiff and inaccurate, and said they could become fatiguing. Creative Bloq was more forgiving, finding them usable for simpler games after adjustment, but still less precise than a standard D-pad.

That difference in reviewer experience matters: the controls are not equally frustrating for every game or player. A slow-paced game may be tolerable, while a platformer or any game that depends on accurate directional input can expose the limitation quickly. Creative Bloq also noted that the labels are hidden, so learning the controls takes time.
Can GamerCard run RetroPie or PICO-8?
The manufacturer lists Recalbox, RetroPie, and Lakka as possible emulator applications, but says they are not included. It also describes PICO-8 compatibility while stating that PICO-8 is sold separately. The product page describes a Pi game app/store as coming soon; it should not be treated as an available, launched service based on that listing.

Those software options do not guarantee effortless setup or universal game compatibility. WIRED described friction transferring files over FTP, stretched games, Game Boy ROM loading problems, and unreliable SNES saves in its review setup. Time Extension also reported configuration and scaling workarounds, along with problems involving RetroArch performance and controller behavior. These are observations from individual review samples and software setups, not proof that every device or later software version will behave identically.
For an emulation purchase, evaluate compatibility title by title rather than relying on the broad “thousands of games” claim. The product page’s details on included software and bundles are at Grant Sinclair’s GamerCard listing.

What reviewers thought
| Publication | Assessment |
|---|---|
| WIRED, October 6, 2026 | 4/10. Praised the display, compact size, and battery life; criticized inconsistent controls, heat during use, slow loading, missing modern-handheld conveniences, and unreliable emulation. Reviewer Matt Kamen wrote, “Right now, the GamerCard feels more prototype than retail-ready.” |
| Time Extension | 3/10. Judged it a poor conventional retro handheld because of its controls and configuration experience, while identifying a possible niche as a lightweight PICO-8 and tinkering device. |
| Creative Bloq, August 12, 2026 | More positive about portability, the screen, and tinkering potential, but cautioned that the controls are less responsive than a D-pad and accuracy-focused games can be frustrating. |
The ratings and experiential judgments above belong to the named publications and their review setups: WIRED’s GamerCard review, Time Extension’s GamerCard review, and Creative Bloq’s GamerCard review.
Is the GamerCard worth buying?
It depends on whether you value its unusual form and maker-friendly character more than reliable, familiar play. The £149 price listed by the manufacturer on October 7, 2026 is a substantial commitment for a device whose strongest case is niche appeal, and the estimated 8–10-week shipping window may also affect your decision. Both details are subject to change, so check the product listing before buying.
- Consider it if: extreme thinness and low weight matter to you, you like PICO-8 or Raspberry Pi experimentation, and you are comfortable troubleshooting software or adapting to unconventional controls.
- Look elsewhere if: you want a familiar D-pad, accurate inputs, easy file management, or predictable emulation without configuration work.
When comparing alternatives, look beyond a headline compatibility claim. Check input comfort, setup effort, game-by-game performance, how each screen handles the systems you care about, actual weight and thickness, expansion options, and total cost—including storage bundles and separately sold software.
