Words With Friends and Scrabble do not use one universal word list. Words With Friends 2 applies Zynga’s published acceptance policy; Scrabble’s reference depends on the setting, with Hasbro identifying a Merriam-Webster list for North American play and a separately managed NASPA list for tournament play. If one game accepts a word and the other rejects it, check the authority for the game and play setting rather than treating either result as a universal dictionary ruling.

What counts as an acceptable word in Words With Friends 2?
Zynga’s rule book says Words With Friends has more than 173,000 acceptable English words. It allows entries labeled as parts of speech even when they are identified as foreign-origin, archaic, obsolete, colloquial, or slang. Zynga also says it adds words of its own, naming “zen” and “texting” as examples; the page says more may be added in future. The figure and policy are Zynga’s published description, not a promise that the list is fixed.

- Proper nouns—words that are always capitalized.
- Abbreviations.
- Prefixes or suffixes used on their own.
- Words that require a hyphen or apostrophe.
These categories explain why a word’s familiarity, appearance in a general dictionary, or use in everyday writing does not by itself settle whether the game accepts it. Zynga names Oxford as a source and describes in-app definition search, while separately describing the game’s acceptable-word rules.

Why did Words With Friends accept a word Scrabble rejected?
Because each game follows its own word authority and policy. Zynga explicitly describes its own additions and permits several labeled word types, while Hasbro identifies a North American Scrabble reference and a separate tournament list. A different decision can therefore reflect different lists or play settings; it does not, on its own, show that either game malfunctioned.
There is no complete, dated word-by-word comparison established here, so a reliable number of words unique to either game—or a definitive list of such words—cannot be given. To resolve a specific dispute, check the current Words With Friends game and the Scrabble lexicon that applies to the region and setting you mean.

Does the in-app dictionary decide whether a word is valid?
Zynga says Words With Friends 2 lets players search definitions of unfamiliar English words in the app. That is useful for understanding a word, but definition lookup and game acceptance are distinct questions: Zynga’s rule book describes the game’s acceptable-word list separately from its definition feature. Use the game’s validation for a Words With Friends move rather than assuming a definition result is an acceptance ruling.
How does a Scrabble word challenge work?
Hasbro’s guidance applies to the physical Scrabble challenge procedure, not to Words With Friends’ in-app validation. A challenge must happen before the next player starts their turn. All words formed in a play are challenged together; if any is unacceptable, the entire play is unacceptable.

- If the challenged word is absent from the dictionary being used, the player takes back the letters and the turn ends.
- If the word is present, the play stands and scores, and the challenger loses their next turn.

Edition claims need a date. Hasbro said in 2020 that the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary was then in its sixth edition. Merriam-Webster’s Scrabble app page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes a Seventh Edition with over 500 new words, but the page does not state its publication date. Those statements establish the editions each source referenced; they do not establish which edition every region or tournament currently uses.
