What are the best security plugins for WordPress?
There is no single best fit for every site. These seven products emphasize different protections, and the available feature descriptions do not establish a head-to-head winner or comparative detection rates.

Which WordPress security plugin fits your priority?
Endpoint firewall and malware scanning: Wordfence
Wordfence Free documents an endpoint firewall and malware scanner, along with login security, alerts, and centralized management. Its free Threat Defense Feed receives firewall rules and malware signatures 30 days after paid customers receive them. Paid Premium provides real-time feed updates and adds features including an IP blocklist and premium support. Those tier differences are more useful for choosing than vendor-reported activity or network figures, which are not independent comparative evidence. See the Wordfence Free feature details and the WordPress.org listing.
#1 Best Overall
Backups bundled with security: Jetpack Security
Jetpack’s Security plan lists VaultPress Backup, Jetpack Scan, Akismet, a website firewall, real-time malware scanning, and one-click fixes. Its firewall documentation says automatic traffic rules require a qualifying plan and a connection to a WordPress.com account. The pricing page showed $9.95 per month for the first year and a regular price of $19.95 per month when accessed on October 7, 2026; these are time-sensitive figures, so check the current Jetpack pricing page before subscribing. Review the Jetpack WAF requirements for the account and plan condition.
Remote malware checks and a separate firewall option: Sucuri Security
The Sucuri WordPress plugin listing describes remote scanning for known malware, viruses, blacklist status, outdated software, and malicious code. It also describes a Website Firewall product that can be used in standalone mode. Do not assume the plugin’s scanning feature and the separate firewall service are the same product or offer the same protections; check the Sucuri plugin listing for the distinction.
Cloud scanning and automated cleanup: MalCare
MalCare’s WordPress.org listing describes a cloud-based malware scanner, cloud firewall, and automated malware removal. It says the plugin works with MalCare servers and requires a MalCare account. Claims about scan speed or detection superiority should be treated as vendor claims; no independent comparison establishes an advantage over the other options. See the MalCare listing.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Vulnerability alerts and virtual patching: Patchstack
Patchstack’s listing describes vulnerability discovery across WordPress core, plugins, and themes, as well as free alerts and update management. Paid virtual patching applies targeted rules when a particular vulnerability is detected. That makes it a different emphasis from a tool focused on scanning an already infected site for malware cleanup. See the Patchstack listing.
Login and hardening controls: AIOS
AIOS documents two-factor authentication, failed-login controls, file and database security, firewall rules, spam protection, and audit logging. Its listing identifies malware scanning and some other functions as premium features, so check the free-versus-premium boundary against the features you require. Details are in the AIOS listing.
Vulnerability and user security features: Solid Security
The WordPress.org listing, currently titled Kadence Security, describes the transition from iThemes Security to Solid Security. Its changelog documents vulnerability identification, site scanning, user security, and firewall functionality. These descriptions do not establish how its protection effectiveness compares with the other products. Check the current listing and changelog.

Do you need a WordPress security plugin?
A plugin can provide controls or services your hosting setup does not already supply, but it is one layer of site security—not a substitute for maintenance or a guarantee against compromise. Before adding one, identify what your host already handles, whether you need backups or cleanup, and which login and vulnerability controls are missing. Avoid stacking overlapping firewall plugins without first establishing compatibility with your host and with one another.
Keep WordPress core, plugins, and themes current. WordPress.org states that only the latest WordPress version is officially supported, while security fixes may be backported to older versions as a courtesy (WordPress security guidance). Updates to extensions remain part of maintaining a secure site.

Is Wordfence or Sucuri better?
They address different needs in the documented feature descriptions. Wordfence Free explicitly includes an endpoint firewall and malware scanner in its plugin, with a 30-day delay for free threat-feed updates. Sucuri’s plugin listing describes remote scanning, while its Website Firewall is a separately described service. Choose based on whether you need an endpoint firewall and scanner in the plugin or remote checks and the separate firewall option; the evidence here does not show that one detects or blocks more attacks than the other.
