If WordPress says it sent a password-reset link but no message appears, first confirm that you entered the username or email address stored on that site, then check spam, filters, forwarding rules, quarantine, and mailbox capacity. If the account and mailbox are correct, the problem is usually the site’s outgoing mail path: a missing or misconfigured SMTP/sendmail service, invalid credentials, or email-authentication policies that reject unauthenticated mail.

On a self-hosted site, an administrator can restore access without email through Users > All Users, WP-CLI, phpMyAdmin/MySQL, FTP, or WordPress’s documented emergency reset procedure. WordPress.com follows its own account-recovery and sender allow-list guidance. Work through the checks below in order so you do not change server settings when the real problem is an incorrect account address.

Start with the account and mailbox
The Lost your password? form sends a reset link to the email address associated with the WordPress user. It cannot deliver a message to an address that was never saved on that site, a mailbox you can no longer access, or an address belonging to a different WordPress installation.
- Open the login page for the exact site you need to enter. Select Lost your password?.
- Enter the username or email address that is actually registered for the site. If you are unsure, ask a site administrator to confirm the account details rather than trying addresses indefinitely.
- Search every mailbox folder for the site name, “password reset,” and the sender address. Check Spam or Junk, quarantine, archive, promotions or other tabs, and any shared-mailbox folders.
- Inspect mailbox rules for messages that are automatically deleted, moved, forwarded, or blocked. Check whether the mailbox is full or the account has been suspended.
- If your mail provider has an allow-list, add the site’s legitimate sender. WordPress.com specifically advises allow-listing
[email protected]and confirming the account email address.
Do not assume that a missing message proves a WordPress configuration failure. A filtering rule or an inaccessible mailbox can produce exactly the same symptom.

Read the message shown by the reset form
The wording on the reset screen tells you whether to investigate the account record or mail delivery.

The WordPress developer reference for wp_mail() makes an important distinction: “A true return value does not automatically mean that the user received the email successfully.” A true result means WordPress processed the send request; it does not confirm acceptance by the recipient’s mail server, placement in the inbox, or successful delivery.

Self-hosted WordPress depends on the hosting server or a configured mail service to send the reset message. Some servers provide a working PHP mail() or sendmail path; others disable it, restrict it, or provide no outbound mail service at all. If that path is absent or unreliable, password resets and other site mail can fail even though the WordPress form behaves normally.
Test whether other site mail is affected
Have an administrator trigger a harmless, ordinary site notification that should go to a known mailbox, or use the mail test supplied by the site’s mail plugin. Send it to an address you can inspect. If several unrelated messages fail, treat the issue as a site-wide transport problem. If ordinary mail arrives but one recipient does not, focus on that recipient’s filtering, address, or provider policy.
Review the configured sender and connection
In the site’s SMTP or mail-delivery configuration, verify each field with the mail provider or host:

- From address: Use an address that exists and is permitted by the sending service. A mismatch between the visible sender and the authenticated account can trigger rejection.
- SMTP host: Confirm the exact server name supplied by the provider.
- Port and encryption: The port must match the selected TLS or SSL mode. An encryption mismatch commonly causes connection failures.
- Username and password: Re-enter current credentials. Rotated passwords, revoked app passwords, and expired tokens stop authentication.
- Authentication mode: Use the method required by the provider rather than an unauthenticated connection.
Save the settings and run the plugin’s test message if one is available. Then inspect its debug log or the host’s mail log. Look for connection timeouts, TLS or certificate errors, authentication failures, sender rejection, recipient rejection, bounces, and rate-limit responses. A log entry showing that a message left WordPress is not proof that the recipient accepted it.

Prefer an authenticated relay when the host mail path is unreliable
An authenticated SMTP relay or transactional email service separates WordPress from the server’s local sendmail configuration. It can provide a documented host, port, encryption method, credentials, and delivery or bounce logs. This is often more dependable than relying on a shared host’s PHP mail setting, but it still requires correct DNS authentication and a sender identity that the service permits.
Verify SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and recipient policies
Mail can be rejected after WordPress hands it to the sending service. Confirm that the domain used in the From address has the DNS records required by that service:
- SPF identifies which servers are authorized to send for the domain. Adding multiple incompatible SPF records or omitting the provider’s required include can make the check fail.
- DKIM adds a cryptographic signature. The public key must be published at the selector and domain specified by the mail provider.
- DMARC tells receiving providers how to handle messages that fail authentication and checks alignment between authenticated domains and the visible From address.
Review the provider’s setup instructions and DNS status after making changes. Allow for DNS propagation according to the provider’s guidance, then send a new test rather than judging the reset message that was generated before the records were corrected. A WordPress support response identifies unauthenticated mail, incorrect SMTP credentials, and incomplete DNS email configuration as possible reasons reset mail is rejected.
Recipient-side policies matter too. Corporate gateways, school systems, privacy services, and hosted mailboxes may quarantine or reject messages that fail authentication, originate from a poor-reputation server, or violate local rules. Ask the recipient’s mail administrator for the rejection or quarantine reason when possible; it is more useful than repeatedly submitting the reset form.

Choose a practical delivery fix
There is no universal provider, price, or delivery-time guarantee. Compare the available routes against the site’s host and the access you have.

Whichever route you select, retain the message ID, timestamp, recipient domain, and log result for a failed test. Those details let a host or mail provider distinguish a WordPress problem from a downstream rejection.
Reset the password without email
If you can still reach an administrator, restoring access does not require the reset mailbox. Use the least-privileged administrator who can complete the change, and avoid exposing a new password in chat, tickets, or shell history.
Use the WordPress dashboard
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open Users > All Users.
- Select the affected user and choose Edit.
- Generate a new password or enter a strong, unique password in the password field.
- Save the user profile, then give the new credential to the user through a secure channel.
After access is restored, have the user change the temporary password again if it was shared with another person. Continue fixing mail delivery so future security notices and resets work normally.
Use WP-CLI when dashboard access is unavailable
An administrator with authorized shell access can update the user from the WordPress installation directory. A typical command is:

wp user update USERNAME --user_pass='A-long-unique-password'Replace USERNAME with the existing WordPress username. Protect the shell session, avoid leaving the password in shared command history, and use the site’s documented WP-CLI practices. If the command reports that the user does not exist, stop and verify the site path and account name rather than creating an unintended account.
Use phpMyAdmin or MySQL only with a backup
The official WordPress password-reset documentation also describes a database route. Take a complete database and site backup first, identify the correct WordPress database and user record, and follow the documented procedure for your WordPress version and database prefix. A wrong database, table prefix, or user row can change the wrong site or lock out another account. Do not run improvised SQL copied from an unrelated installation.
Use FTP and the documented emergency reset script as a last resort
When no administrator can sign in, the official Reset your password guide documents an emergency script that can be uploaded through FTP and used to set a new password. Follow that guide exactly for the current WordPress release, restrict access to the script, and delete it immediately after the reset. Leaving a password-reset script in a public web directory gives anyone who discovers it a path into the site.

Do not apply self-hosted SMTP instructions to a WordPress.com account unless WordPress.com specifically directs you to do so.
Common scenarios and the fastest branch to take
Only one user cannot receive the link
Reconfirm the exact email stored for that user, inspect that mailbox’s filters and capacity, and try a different verified address only if an administrator is authorized to change the account. If other users receive mail, a global SMTP outage is less likely.
No site email reaches anyone
Check the host’s outbound mail status, SMTP connection, credentials, encryption, and logs. Move to an authenticated relay if the host does not provide a dependable sendmail path. Then verify SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for the sending domain.
The log shows authentication failure
Reset or reissue the SMTP password, API key, or app credential; confirm the username and host; and check whether the provider requires a different encryption mode or port. Test once after saving the corrected settings.

Record the provider’s response, verify the recipient address, and ask the recipient’s mail administrator whether the message was blocked or quarantined. Correct sender authentication or policy issues before generating another reset link.
The form says “sent,” but there is no useful log
Enable the mail plugin’s debug logging or ask the host for outbound-mail records. Remember that wp_mail() returning true only confirms that WordPress processed the request, not that any mailbox accepted it.
Verify the repair and prevent another lockout
- Send a test message through the same path used by password resets to an address you control.
- Confirm receipt in the inbox and inspect the message headers or provider log for the authenticated sending domain.
- Repeat the test with the affected recipient domain if it uses stricter filtering.
- Record the SMTP or API owner, DNS records, sender address, and where delivery logs are found.
- Keep at least one administrator account with a monitored email address, and store recovery procedures securely.
- Take regular site and database backups so a database- or file-level recovery remains possible.
WordPress documentation does not establish a universal failure rate or guaranteed delivery time for password-reset mail. If a corrected message still does not arrive, the decisive evidence is the recipient or provider’s rejection, quarantine, or bounce record—not the success notice displayed by the reset form.
