They are not mutually exclusive: a dedicated server can host WordPress, and either option may be managed or unmanaged. Compare the actual work, access, and resources included—not just the label.
What the two hosting labels mean
WordPress-specific hosting
This describes a service designed for WordPress, which may include WordPress preinstalled. Providers may also offer features such as backups, updates, or developer tools, but those extras vary by provider and plan. The label alone does not tell you how much maintenance or support is included. WordPress.org describes the category as a platform designed for installing WordPress, or even pre-installed WordPress.

Dedicated hosting
This describes an infrastructure arrangement: physical server capacity is assigned exclusively to one customer. It can offer more configuration control, but the access you actually get depends on the contract. Dedicated hosting may be managed or unmanaged; exclusivity does not mean the provider will maintain the server for you.

How the options compare
| Decision | WordPress-specific hosting | Dedicated hosting |
|---|---|---|
| What it describes | A service oriented around WordPress; it may include installation and WordPress-related conveniences. | Physical server capacity reserved for one customer. Management can be managed or unmanaged. |
| Who handles operations | Depends on the plan. Check who handles WordPress or plugin updates, backups, security, and support. | Depends on the service. Confirm who configures the server, applies operating-system updates and security patches, monitors it, and maintains backups. |
| Control | Access varies by provider and plan; the WordPress-specific label does not define it. | Dedicated infrastructure can offer configuration control, but verify the actual access granted. |
| Cost and skills | Compare the plan price and support with the work it includes. | Dedicated hosting is characterized as high cost by WordPress.com; unmanaged service also requires technical operations. Get current quotes. |
| Speed and security | Neither follows from the product label. Check specifications and evidence for your workload. | Exclusive physical resources do not by themselves establish application speed or security. Configuration, maintenance, workload, and provider controls matter. |
Which option fits your situation?
Choose WordPress-specific hosting when you want to focus on the site
For a first WordPress site or a site owner who would rather focus on content, start with a host experienced with WordPress. Before choosing a plan, confirm which updates, backups, security tasks, and support it includes. If you want the provider to take on more of the technical work, look for a managed service and check its precise scope.
#1 Best Overall
Consider dedicated hosting when you need exclusive capacity or server control
Compare dedicated offers if you specifically need physical resources reserved for your site or broader server configuration control. Decide who will perform ongoing maintenance: your team, the provider under a managed service, or another administrator. A managed dedicated plan can combine exclusive infrastructure with provider operations, but the contract should spell out what those operations cover.
Do not choose by traffic guesses or speed promises
There is no established universal traffic cutoff at which a site must move to dedicated hosting, and the available sources do not establish a performance winner through neutral, workload-matched comparisons. Base the choice on your actual requirements, plan specifications, operational capacity, and evidence relevant to your workload—not a generic traffic number or the word “dedicated.”
What to check before buying
Compare the plans on the same practical questions. Record the answers in writing, especially where “managed” or “WordPress” is used as a broad label.

WordPress technical requirements to keep in view
As checked October 7, 2026, WordPress.org’s Requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. It recommends Apache or Nginx, while noting that other servers supporting PHP and MySQL may work.
Rank #3
The WordPress Hosting Handbook separately recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production environments and advises hosts to test the full stack before making a new PHP version the production default. These are different layers of guidance: the Requirements page’s stated baseline is not the same as the Handbook’s production recommendation.
The Handbook also gives memory starting points—not guarantees—for host environments: 128M minimum for a vanilla WordPress installation, 256M as a recommended default for a typical production site, and 512M or more for resource-intensive sites. Check the requirements of your own site and applications rather than treating these figures as a promise of performance.
Rank #4
Dedicated does not automatically mean safer
WordPress.org notes that hosting is more secure when PHP applications such as WordPress run using the account’s username rather than the server’s default shared username. That is an account-isolation recommendation, not proof that a dedicated server is inherently more secure. Security still depends on configuration, updates, and ongoing maintenance.
