For most WordPress plugins, start with the WordPress MCP Adapter’s default server: it exposes opted-in WordPress Abilities through a shared MCP interface. Register a custom server through the Adapter when your plugin needs its own identity, route, transport configuration, or handlers. Build an independent MCP server only when the Adapter’s integration model or running inside WordPress does not fit—and you are prepared to own the additional integration and security work.
These are not simply “Adapter versus MCP” alternatives: the Adapter speaks MCP. The choice is whether to use its default server, configure a custom server through it, or implement a separate server.

What the WordPress MCP Adapter does
The WordPress MCP Adapter connects the WordPress Abilities API to the Model Context Protocol. Depending on an ability’s metadata, abilities can be made available to MCP clients as tools, resources, or prompts. The default server provides three meta-tools: discover abilities, retrieve information about an ability, and execute an ability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe project documentation states that “WordPress abilities are private by default.” An ability must be opted in for MCP exposure. That exposure determines what a client can discover; it does not by itself authorize a user to execute the ability.

Which approach fits your plugin?
| Approach | WordPress integration and interface | Best fit | What you must review |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adapter default server | Uses WordPress Abilities and the default discovery, information, and execution meta-tools. | A plugin whose functionality maps cleanly to abilities and fits the common MCP interface. | Ability exposure metadata, callbacks, user capabilities, and endpoint authentication. |
| Custom server through the Adapter | Retains the Adapter’s WordPress integration while allowing a plugin-specific server configuration and interface. | A plugin that needs a distinct server identity, route, description, version, transport configuration, or server-specific handlers. | The same ability permissions, plus server configuration and dependency/version management. |
| Independent custom MCP server | The developer implements the WordPress connection and server interface separately. | A requirement that does not fit the Adapter’s integration model, or a server that must run outside the WordPress process. This is an architectural inference, not a WordPress-documented comparative recommendation. | Protocol behavior, identity and authorization mapping, WordPress integration, deployment, and ongoing maintenance. |
When the default server is enough
Use the default server when your plugin’s operations are already expressed as WordPress Abilities and the shared discovery-and-execution pattern is suitable for your client. You can keep the interface common rather than maintaining a separate server boundary for one plugin.
Before connecting a client, decide which abilities it should be able to discover and execute. Review each ability’s metadata and callback, and confirm that the intended authenticated WordPress user has only the capabilities needed for those operations.
When to register a custom server through the Adapter
The WordPress developer article demonstrates registering a custom server through the Adapter package. The example hooks into mcp_adapter_init and calls create_server(), supplying configuration such as a server identifier, REST namespace and route, name, description, version, and transports. This gives a plugin a distinct MCP-facing boundary while retaining the Adapter’s WordPress integration.

If multiple plugins may depend on the Adapter or Abilities API, the developer article advises considering Jetpack Autoloader to help avoid version conflicts.
When an independent MCP server may be justified
A separate implementation may make sense if the server must operate outside WordPress or if the required interface falls outside what the Adapter provides. The cited WordPress materials explain custom servers registered through the Adapter; they do not provide a head-to-head evaluation of independent implementations.
With a separate server, the developer—not the Adapter—must design and maintain the connection between MCP identity and WordPress identity, authorization and capability checks, protocol behavior, deployment, and updates. Treat it as an architectural choice with additional ownership, not as an established shortcut to better performance, security, or ease of use.

How to connect a local or remote WordPress site
WordPress’s developer article describes two transport contexts: WP-CLI over STDIO for a local development environment, and HTTP for remote client access. The client’s configuration varies, so use that client’s instructions for the exact connection settings.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- For local development: run the Adapter through WP-CLI over STDIO, following the setup instructions for your MCP client. The WordPress example passes a WordPress user argument; it illustrates configuration, not a recommendation to grant an AI client an administrator account.
- For remote access: configure the client to connect over HTTP. The documented default server endpoint is not this URL—that is the separate WordPress.com service. For a self-hosted site using the Adapter’s default server, the route is
/wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server. A custom server can define its own route.
The plugin’s installation requirements and distribution can change. The Learn WordPress lesson available on 2026-10-07 lists WordPress 6.9 or higher and PHP 7.4 or higher, and directs users to GitHub Releases; it says the plugin is not yet listed on WordPress.org. Check the current release information before installing rather than treating those version requirements or the distribution channel as permanent.

Security depends on both exposure and execution authorization. The Adapter documentation describes configurable capability checks for discovering abilities, retrieving their information, and executing them. The Learn WordPress lesson explains that public discovery does not grant unrestricted execution: the authenticated user and the ability’s permission callback still govern whether execution is allowed.

- Expose only the abilities the client needs; abilities are private by default.
- Use a dedicated WordPress account with only the capabilities required for the intended abilities, rather than giving an AI client administrator access.
- Test each ability’s permission callback and the data it returns using the identity and connection method you will actually deploy.
- Review the authentication protecting the HTTP endpoint as well as the capability checks governing individual actions.
Keep MCP visibility distinct from REST API visibility when supporting different WordPress versions. The official ability guide says WordPress core starts applying meta.public to REST API visibility in WordPress 7.1. On WordPress 6.9 and 7.0, the Adapter honors meta.public for MCP exposure, but REST API access still requires meta.show_in_rest to be true.
Is WordPress.com’s managed MCP service a better fit?
WordPress.com documents a hosted MCP endpoint at https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1. It is a separate managed connection path, not a custom-server feature of the WordPress MCP Adapter. Its documentation says one connection reaches sites on the account and authentication uses OAuth 2.1 through browser authorization.
Eligibility depends on the account and site: the documentation says MCP is available on paid WordPress.com plans; a free WordPress.com site can use it during the first 30 days after site creation; and self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack require Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete. Check current plan terms and availability before relying on this route.
