Are Teleconverters Worth It? Pros, Cons, and Compatibility

Teleconverters can extend a compatible lens’s reach, but 1.4x and 2x models reduce light by about one and two stops respectively. Check exact compatibility before buying.

A teleconverter is worth considering if you need more reach from a compatible telephoto lens and can tolerate a smaller effective maximum aperture. A 1.4x converter adds 40% to focal length and costs about one stop of light; a 2x converter doubles focal length and costs about two stops. The trade-off is useful for some wildlife and sports photography, but fit and performance depend on the exact camera, lens, and converter combination.

What a teleconverter does

A teleconverter mounts between a compatible lens and camera body to increase the lens’s effective focal length. Nikon describes it as a way to increase a lens’s apparent focal length and produce a greater telephoto effect (Nikon: Using Teleconverters).

For example, a compatible 70–200mm lens gives an approximate 98–280mm range with a 1.4x converter, or 140–400mm with a 2x converter. These are focal-length calculations, not a guarantee that a particular lens accepts either converter.

What you gain—and what you give up

More reach without another long lens

A converter can extend the reach of gear you already own, which may be appealing when photographing distant wildlife or sports and carrying a larger, longer lens is inconvenient. Sony identifies those subjects as intended uses for its FE converters (Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter SEL14TC; Sony FE 2.0x Teleconverter SEL20TC).

Less light and a smaller effective maximum aperture

Magnification comes with an exposure cost. Sony specifies approximately one stop of light loss for its 1.4x SEL14TC and approximately two stops for its 2x SEL20TC. In practice, the reduced light may mean using a slower shutter speed or raising ISO to maintain exposure. That matters most when the scene is dim or the subject is moving quickly.

The exact autofocus and image-quality result depends on the camera, lens, converter, and shooting conditions. Sony describes performance for its supported combinations, but that does not establish a universal result across brands or lenses. The available manufacturer guidance does not support a single image-quality penalty or a universal claim that one multiplier always produces better images.

Choosing between 1.4x and 2x

Converter Focal-length effect Light loss Best considered when
1.4x Multiplies focal length by 1.4; a 70–200mm lens would become approximately 98–280mm if compatible. About one stop for Sony’s SEL14TC, according to Sony product information. You want a moderate reach increase and prefer the smaller stated exposure penalty.
2x Doubles focal length; a 70–200mm lens would become approximately 140–400mm if compatible. About two stops for Sony’s SEL20TC, according to Sony product information. You need substantially more reach and have enough light or exposure flexibility for the larger penalty.

The example focal lengths are arithmetic illustrations, not verified compatibility recommendations. Sony’s stop-loss figures are product specifications, not independent comparative tests (SEL14TC specifications; SEL20TC specifications).

Check compatibility before buying

Teleconverters are not universal accessories. Mount, physical design, rear-element clearance, and manufacturer-approved combinations all matter; owning a lens and converter from the same brand does not by itself establish that they will work together.

NIKON Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4X for 1.4X Magnification of Compatible Nikon Z Mirrorless Lenses and Nikon Z Cameras
  • Compatible with select Nikon NIKKOR Z long telephoto lenses.
  • Increases the native reach of compatible lenses by 40%—without any loss of resolution and with outstanding image quality.
  • Retains all AF functionality and speed, VR capabilities and minimum focusing distance, with only 1 stop of light loss.
  • Can use every focus point of your Z series camera's sensor all the way down to f/11, unprecedented for teleconverters.
  • Maintains the close focusing capability of NIKKOR Z lenses while enlarging the reproduction ratio by 1.4x. Durable and dust and drip resistant.
  1. Identify the exact camera body, lens model, and converter model you plan to use.
  2. Check the current manufacturer compatibility chart for that precise combination. Nikon provides a model-specific teleconverter compatibility chart; Sony lists compatible lenses for its FE teleconverters.
  3. Review any body, lens, or firmware qualifications listed by the manufacturer, including notes about autofocus or other functions.
  4. If the combination is not explicitly supported, do not assume it will physically fit or operate correctly.

For a concrete product example, the Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter SEL14TC is intended for select compatible lenses, not every Sony lens. Confirm the exact lens and body before ordering (Sony SEL14TC).

How to decide if one is worth it for you

  • Start with compatibility: If the exact combination is not approved, the other trade-offs do not matter.
  • Estimate the needed reach: Apply the multiplier to the lens’s focal-length range and ask whether the resulting framing solves a real shooting need.
  • Account for light and motion: Consider whether the stop loss will force a shutter speed too slow for your subject or an ISO level you find unacceptable.
  • Check system-specific performance: Look for manufacturer notes about autofocus and operation for your exact lens and body; do not infer results from a different combination.
  • Compare practical alternatives: Cropping avoids adding a converter but does not optically magnify the image. A longer lens may avoid the converter’s light loss but can involve carrying and buying different equipment. The available sources do not establish a universal winner between a converter and cropping.

A teleconverter is most compelling when its reach solves a specific problem, the combination is confirmed compatible, and you can work within the exposure cost. If light is scarce, action is fast, or the supported combination’s performance does not meet your needs, the added magnification may not be worth the compromise.
