When a WordPress featured image is missing, the image file is usually not the problem. The failure is normally in one of six places: the editor does not support featured images, the image was assigned to a different post, the active template never renders it, WordPress did not create the thumbnail size the template requests, CSS hides or crops it, or a cache serves an old or altered response.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Use the diagnostic order below. Start in the editor, then check the template, generated files, browser markup, CSS, caches, and finally theme or plugin conflicts. This approach fixes the immediate post without unnecessarily changing the whole site.

There are two very different symptoms:
- The Featured Image control is missing in the editor. This is an editor-support or post-type problem.
- The control is present and an image is selected, but the live page has no image. This is usually a template, thumbnail, CSS, loading, cache, or conflict problem.
Open the affected post or page and confirm that the image is assigned in the Post settings, not merely inserted into the content. Save or update the post, then test the public URL in a private browser window. If the image appears there, the original browser or a cache was showing stale content.
When the Featured Image panel is missing
Check Screen Options first
In the classic editor, open Screen Options at the top right and enable Featured Image if it is unchecked. In the block editor, open the settings sidebar with the gear icon and select the Post tab. A collapsed or hidden panel can look like a missing feature.

Confirm theme support
A theme must declare support for featured images before WordPress adds the Featured Image interface to an edit screen. For a classic theme, the declaration is commonly placed in functions.php:
add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' );
Add the declaration on the active theme, not an inactive theme. A child theme can inherit the parent’s support, but a custom or recently switched theme may not declare it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Featured images are enabled per post type. Posts may support them while pages or a custom post type does not. When registering a custom post type, include thumbnail in its supports array:
register_post_type( 'portfolio', array(
'supports' => array( 'title', 'editor', 'thumbnail' ),
) );
If a plugin or custom code registers the post type, change that registration rather than adding unrelated template code. After changing support, reload the editor and verify the Post settings sidebar again.
Block themes use a different editing model
In a block theme, go to Appearance → Editor. The theme can expose featured-image controls through its templates and the Post Featured Image block. If the block is absent from the relevant template, selecting an image on a post will not automatically place it on the page. The editor control and the front-end display are separate decisions.
When an image is selected but does not appear on the site
Inspect the template used by that URL
WordPress does not force every theme, archive, homepage, or single-post layout to display a selected featured image. The active template decides whether it is rendered. A single-post template may show it while an archive card or homepage does not, or the reverse.

For a block theme, open Appearance → Editor → Templates and inspect the template actually used by the failing URL:
- Single or a post-type-specific single template for an individual post.
- Archive for category, tag, date, or custom archives.
- Home or the posts index for a blog listing.
- A custom template assigned to the page or post.
Look for a Post Featured Image block. Select it and check its visibility, dimensions, aspect ratio, and linked-post settings. Save the template after making the change; editing the post alone does not modify a site template.
Classic and hybrid themes normally render the image in PHP, often with the_post_thumbnail(), or expose a switch under Appearance → Customize or a theme-specific options panel. Check those settings for separate controls such as “show on single posts,” “show on archives,” “display header image,” or “hide featured image.” Labels vary by theme, so inspect the template or theme documentation when a switch is not obvious.
Verify that the image belongs to the intended post
Open the post’s editor, select the Post tab, and note the thumbnail shown under Featured image. Do not assume that an image inserted into the content, an image in the media library, or an image used as a site logo is also the post’s featured image. On a custom post type, confirm you edited the same record whose public URL you are testing.
How WordPress creates the image file a theme requests
Uploading an original image does not create just one browser file. WordPress normally generates several derivatives:
| WordPress size | Default setting | What the value means |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbnail | 150 × 150 px maximum | Configured as a small square-style size; cropping behavior depends on the setting. |
| Medium | 300 × 300 px maximum | WordPress constrains the image to these maximum dimensions while preserving its ratio unless a crop is configured. |
| Medium-large | 768 px maximum width | WordPress uses the width limit and calculates the height from the image ratio. |
| Large | 1024 × 1024 px maximum | WordPress constrains both maximum dimensions while preserving the ratio unless a crop is configured. |
| Full Size | Original resolution | The uploaded file at its original dimensions, subject to any processing or upload limits. |
The active theme or plugin can register additional sizes with add_image_size() and request one with the_post_thumbnail(). For example:

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
add_image_size( 'card-wide', 640, 360, true );
the_post_thumbnail( 'card-wide' );
The fourth argument, true, requests hard cropping to the specified dimensions. A theme can therefore produce a blank-looking card, a broken image URL, or an unexpectedly cropped image even though the original upload is valid.
Regenerate derivatives after size changes
If the theme added or changed a size after the image was uploaded, old media items may not have that file. Install a reputable thumbnail-regeneration tool, run it for the affected media, and verify the requested size exists. Regeneration changes media derivatives across the site; it does not change the original upload or automatically alter the template.

Before regenerating a large library, check available storage and run a small batch. If only one post is affected, regenerate that attachment first and test it before processing everything.
Use the browser to distinguish a missing file from a hidden image
Developer tools can show exactly what the page received. Open the public page, right-click the affected area, choose Inspect, and search the Elements panel for an <img> element.
If no image element exists
No <img> means the active template or block layout did not render the featured image. Recheck the template, the block’s visibility, and any theme option that controls featured-image output. A CSS fix cannot restore markup that was never generated.
If an image element exists
Record its src and srcset values. Open the src URL in a new tab and check the browser Network panel:

- 200 response and an image opens: the file exists; inspect computed CSS and layout.
- 404 response: the template requested a missing derivative or an obsolete URL. Regenerate the required size, correct the media URL, or remove the stale cache.
- 403 or other access error: a security, permissions, hotlink, or CDN rule may be blocking the file.
- Unexpected domain or path: an optimization or CDN layer may be rewriting the URL incorrectly.
In the Computed styles panel, check display, visibility, opacity, width, height, overflow, and positioning. A loaded image with zero dimensions, display: none, a clipped parent, or an opaque overlay can appear to be missing.
Fix aspect ratio, dimensions, and cropping problems
The Post Featured Image block has controls for aspect ratio, height, and width. A fixed height combined with an unsuitable ratio can crop a subject out of view; an overly restrictive width can reduce the image to an apparently empty sliver. In the Site Editor, select the block and review those controls before editing CSS.
Common CSS causes include:
width: 0orheight: 0inherited from a layout rule.display: none,visibility: hidden, or very lowopacity.overflow: hiddenon a short container that clips the image.- A fixed frame with
object-fit: coverthat removes the important part of the photograph. - A selector that targets every image inside a card and unintentionally hides the featured image.
Use a narrow, scoped rule rather than changing every image globally. For example:
.single-post .wp-block-post-featured-image img {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: auto;
}
Replace the selector with the class used by your theme. If the design requires a fixed card frame, set an intentional aspect ratio and use object-fit: cover only when cropping is acceptable. Remove the rule or revert the Customizer change if it affects unrelated templates.
Account for lazy loading and cache layers
Lazy loading is normally expected
Since WordPress 5.5, images rendered through core paths such as wp_get_attachment_image() are lazy-loaded by default. The browser may defer an image until it approaches the viewport. A slow or over-aggressive optimization script can make a valid image appear late, replace its URL, or fail to restore it.
Scroll the image into view and watch the Network panel. If the request starts only after scrolling, lazy loading is working rather than proving that the image is absent. If an optimization plugin has rewritten the markup, temporarily disable only its lazy-load or image-rewrite feature and retest.
Best Value
Clear every relevant cache
After changing a template, image size, CSS rule, or optimization setting, stale output can remain at several layers:
- Save or update the post or template.
- Purge the WordPress caching or optimization plugin.
- Purge any hosting page cache.
- Purge the CDN cache if one is in use.
- Hard-refresh the browser, then test in a private window.
Compare the page source before relying on the visual result. If the source still contains an old image URL after a purge, another cache or server-side page layer is serving the old HTML.

If the image exists, the template is correct, derivatives are present, and caches are clear, test for a conflict. Make a backup and, where possible, use a staging site. On the live site, schedule the test for a low-traffic period and avoid leaving security or caching components disabled.
- Record the affected URL, post type, active template, selected image, image URL, and current cache settings.
- Temporarily switch to a current default WordPress theme. Check the same post and archive.
- If the image appears, the original theme, its template, or its CSS is responsible. If it remains missing, continue.
- Deactivate nonessential plugins, especially page builders, image optimizers, lazy-load tools, CDN connectors, and access-control plugins.
- Reactivate plugins one at a time, checking the page after each activation.
- When the problem returns, inspect that component’s settings and its generated markup, then restore the other plugins.
A default-theme test changes site presentation, so it is a diagnostic step, not a permanent fix. Keep a record of which component changed the result so you can reverse the test without guessing.
Choose the least disruptive fix
| Where the failure is found | Typical fix | Skill level | Scope and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Editor panel or Screen Options | Enable the panel and confirm post-type support. | Settings | Usually one editor screen; low risk. |
| Theme or block template | Add or enable the Post Featured Image block, or correct the theme template. | Settings to code | Can affect every post using that template. |
| Missing derivative | Regenerate thumbnails or correct the requested size. | Settings | Changes media derivatives; storage and processing are considerations. |
| CSS or block dimensions | Remove the hiding rule and set deliberate width, height, ratio, and crop behavior. | Settings to CSS | May alter many cards or posts if the selector is broad. |
| Lazy loading or optimization | Correct the rewrite or disable only the faulty feature. | Settings | Can affect performance and every optimized image. |
| Cache | Purge plugin, host, CDN, and browser caches in that order. | Settings | Low code risk; visitors may briefly receive uncached pages. |
| Theme or plugin conflict | Reactivate components one by one and repair the offending setting or code. | Intermediate | Potentially site-wide; use staging or a maintenance window. |
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Follow this checklist without skipping ahead:
- Open the intended post and verify the selected image under Post → Featured image.
- Enable the panel through Screen Options or the editor settings sidebar if it is hidden.
- Confirm the active theme declares
post-thumbnailsand that the post type supportsthumbnail. - For a block theme, inspect Appearance → Editor → Templates and add or configure the Post Featured Image block in the template used by the failing URL.
- For a classic or hybrid theme, check Appearance → Customize and theme options, then inspect the single, archive, or homepage template.
- Inspect the rendered page for an
<img>, itssrc, and itssrcset. - Test the requested URL for a 200 response, then check for 404s, access errors, wrong paths, or a missing derivative.
- Regenerate thumbnails if the theme’s requested size was added or changed after upload.
- Check computed CSS and block dimensions for zero size, hidden display, clipping, unsuitable aspect ratio, and unwanted cropping.
- Scroll the image into view to test lazy loading, then temporarily isolate image optimization if the request is rewritten or never starts.
- Purge plugin, host, CDN, and browser caches; retest in a private window.
- Use a default theme and one-by-one plugin reactivation to identify a remaining conflict.
Prevent future featured-image failures
- Keep featured-image support enabled deliberately for every post type that needs it.
- Document which templates display images on single posts, archives, search results, and the homepage.
- Use consistent registered image sizes and regenerate derivatives after changing them.
- Review block aspect-ratio and crop settings at the same time you change a layout.
- After template or optimization changes, test one single post, one archive, and one mobile viewport.
- Keep a cache-purge procedure for the WordPress plugin, host, CDN, and browser layers.
- Record the original theme, plugin, template, and image URL before disabling anything during conflict testing.
The Bottom Line
A featured image can be selected correctly and still remain invisible because WordPress separates image assignment from image rendering. Check editor support, the active template, generated thumbnail files, rendered markup, CSS, loading behavior, caches, and conflicts in that order; the first layer that fails identifies the appropriate fix.
