How to Host a Create: Above and Beyond Server on Minecraft 1.16.5

A complete setup guide for self-hosting or using managed hosting for Create: Above and Beyond v1.3, including the official server pack, Java 8, networking, matching clients, backups, and fixes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to host Create: Above and Beyond is to install its official Server Pack – Above and Beyond v1.3, run the included Forge server on Java 8, and make the server reachable either through your router or a managed host. Every player must use the same Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge, and pack version. Do not upload the client modpack ZIP as if it were a server installation; the server pack is a separate download on the official CurseForge files page.

You can self-host at home for maximum control and no hosting subscription, or use managed hosting if you want someone else to handle the machine, firewall, storage, and much of the network setup. The steps below cover both routes, including the Java issue that causes many Above and Beyond startup crashes.

What you are hosting

Create: Above and Beyond is a Forge modpack for Minecraft: Java Edition 1.16.5. CurseForge lists Above and Beyond v1.3, released on 15 December 2021, and a separate file named Server Pack – Above and Beyond v1.3. The project describes itself as “The official Challenge-pack with Create. New inventions await!” That version and loader combination are the compatibility target for this guide.

A server is not a copy of one player’s launcher profile. It is a separate Java process containing the server-side Forge files, configuration, world data, and mods. Clients connect only when their installed pack and Forge profile match the server.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting

Decide where the Java process will run before downloading anything. The software is the same, but the operational work is different.

Factor Self-hosted computer Managed host
Setup effort Download and extract files, install or select Java 8, configure the firewall, and usually forward a router port. Upload or select the server pack in a provider panel; the provider supplies the machine and network endpoint.
Control Full access to files, Java arguments, backups, logs, and configuration. Control depends on the panel and plan; file access is normally available but hardware-level access is not.
Recurring cost No hosting bill, but you provide electricity, storage, and an internet connection. Recurring subscription; current plan terms vary by provider and region.
Network work You must permit Java through the host firewall and configure router forwarding for players outside your home. The provider normally supplies a public address, so home-router configuration is usually unnecessary.
Backups Your responsibility unless you create an automated backup routine. Check exactly what the plan backs up, how often, and how restoration works; do not assume backups are included.
Latency and capacity Depends on your upload bandwidth, hardware, and distance to players. Choose a region near most players and confirm that the provider still supports this legacy 1.16.5 pack.

There is no universal RAM minimum established for this pack. Provider recommendations differ and have not been independently benchmarked here, so size a plan according to your player count, view distance, automation load, and the provider’s current guidance rather than treating one number as a guarantee.

Download the correct official files

  1. Open the official CurseForge files page for Create: Above and Beyond.
  2. Select the Above and Beyond v1.3 release and download the separate Server Pack – Above and Beyond v1.3 file.
  3. Create a dedicated, empty directory for the server. A path such as Create-AaB-Server keeps the world and logs separate from your client launcher files.
  4. Extract the server-pack archive into that directory without flattening or deleting its included folders, Forge files, libraries, or launch scripts.

The client ZIP and the server pack serve different purposes. Installing the client archive on a server commonly leaves out the launch structure or server-specific files and creates confusing missing-mod errors. Keep the downloaded archive so you can recreate the installation if the folder becomes damaged.

Start the server for the first time

Use the launch script supplied with the server pack rather than inventing a new command before you know how the pack is arranged. On Windows this is usually a batch launcher; on Linux or macOS it is commonly a shell launcher. If your operating system blocks the script, inspect its permissions and run it from a terminal in the server directory so you can read the log.

  1. Open the extracted server directory.
  2. Run the included Forge server launcher once.
  3. Wait for the process to generate files and stop with an EULA notice. This first run may take several minutes while Forge prepares libraries and the initial configuration.
  4. Open eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the setting to eula=true if you agree.
  5. Start the same launcher again. A successful second start should create a world directory and reach a message indicating that the server is ready for commands.

Do not close the terminal abruptly during world generation. Stop the server with its console stop command so chunks and configuration are written cleanly.

Configure server.properties

Stop the server before editing configuration. Open server.properties in a plain-text editor and set the policies your group needs.

World and gameplay settings

  • World name: choose a stable name before inviting players. Changing it later points the server at a different world directory.
  • Difficulty: select the intended difficulty for the challenge pack.
  • Whitelist: enable it if only invited players should join, then add each player’s exact in-game name from the server console.
  • Other policy options: review permission, player-limit, and gameplay settings before opening the address to the internet.

Keep the file’s existing syntax: one setting per line in key=value form, with no quotation marks unless the file already requires them. Restart after changes and check the startup log for parsing errors.

Run Above and Beyond with the right Java version

This is a legacy Forge 1.16.5 stack. Java 8 is the expected runtime. A pack-specific installation guide documents a known crash on some newer Java 8 updates and lists Java 8u312 or earlier as a fallback. That does not mean every machine must use exactly 8u312; it means that if the server crashes during Forge startup on a newer Java 8 build, test an older Java 8 update rather than switching randomly among modern Java releases.

Make a self-hosted server reachable

A server that starts locally is not automatically reachable by friends on the internet. Work through the network layers in order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test on the same network first

  1. Keep the server running and note the host computer’s local network address.
  2. From another computer on the same home network, add the server using that local address.
  3. If the local connection fails, fix the server process or host firewall before touching the router. Port forwarding cannot repair a server that is not listening locally.

Allow the Java process through the host firewall

Create an inbound rule for the Java server process or approve the prompt shown by your operating system’s firewall. Restrict the rule to the server’s listening port and the appropriate network profile when your firewall supports those controls. If you change Java installations, the executable path may change and the old rule may no longer apply.

Forward the listening port for remote players

For friends outside your home, create a router port-forwarding rule that sends the server’s listening port to the host computer’s local address. Router screens differ by manufacturer and firmware, so use your router’s current documentation rather than following a vendor-specific sequence as if it were universal. Reserve the host computer’s local address through the router’s DHCP settings if possible; otherwise the forwarding target can change after a reboot.

Give remote players your public address and the server port shown in your configuration. Do not publish your public address in a public forum. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound forwarding may not work even when the router rule is correct; in that case, a managed host or a network service designed for private networks may be simpler.

Verify from outside the home network

Ask a friend on a different connection to test while the server is running. Testing only from inside your own Wi-Fi can produce a false positive because some routers handle internal loopback differently from external traffic.

Give every player a matching client

Before troubleshooting connectivity, make the files identical.

  1. Have each player install Create: Above and Beyond v1.3 through a launcher that supports CurseForge packs.
  2. Confirm the launcher profile uses Minecraft 1.16.5 and the matching Forge profile.
  3. Do not add, remove, or replace mods unless every player and the server receive the same tested change.
  4. Start the pack once on the client so its configuration files are generated.
  5. Enter the server’s local address on a home network or the public address supplied for remote play.

A different pack release, missing mod, changed mod version, or different loader can prevent a connection before networking is even considered. Messages such as registry-sync failures, missing-channel errors, or a disconnect during the handshake usually indicate a file or loader mismatch.

Use managed hosting instead

Managed hosting is useful when you want a shareable server without maintaining a home machine or router. CurseForge’s hosted-server support flow describes the process as choosing a modpack with a matching server pack, selecting a plan and region, entering server details, and paying through the hosted service. That article identifies Shockbyte as the hosting provider and Tebex as the billing infrastructure; it was modified on 8 September 2026.

  1. Choose a provider and confirm, in writing, that it supports Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge and the Above and Beyond v1.3 server pack.
  2. Select a region close to most players.
  3. Use the provider’s modpack selector if it lists the pack, or upload the official server-pack files through the panel.
  4. Set Java 8 in the panel when a runtime selector is available.
  5. Start once, accept the EULA in the panel’s file manager or console, and restart.
  6. Set the world, whitelist, and other properties, then invite players using the endpoint supplied by the provider.

Some panels advertise one-click installation from CurseForge or Modrinth, while others support direct server-file upload. Prism Nodes, for example, documents both approaches. Treat one-click availability, storage limits, backups, support response, and legacy-pack support as commercial details to verify at the time you subscribe; they can change.

Backups and routine maintenance

Make a restorable backup

  1. Tell players the server is closing and stop it cleanly from the console.
  2. Copy the world directory and important files such as server.properties, whitelist and operator files, and the server’s configuration directories to storage outside the live server folder.
  3. Label backups with the date and pack version.
  4. Keep at least one copy on a different disk or service from the machine running the server.
  5. Occasionally restore a copy to a separate test directory so you know the backup is usable.

Change one thing at a time

Back up before changing mods, Forge files, Java, or server settings. Change one variable, start the server, and inspect the log before making another change. Never replace the world or mod directory while the process is running.

Troubleshoot common failures

The server exits immediately

  • Check whether eula=true was saved in the correct server directory.
  • Confirm the launcher is using Java 8, not a newer default Java.
  • Read the first error and its “caused by” section in the log rather than relying on the final shutdown line.
  • If the crash appeared after a Java 8 update, test Java 8u312 or earlier as documented by the pack-specific guide.

Forge crashes while loading mods

  • Verify that you extracted the official server pack, not the client ZIP.
  • Restore the original pack files if any were deleted or replaced.
  • Check that the server’s Forge and mod files are all from v1.3.

A player gets a mod or registry mismatch

  • Compare the player’s pack release with the server’s v1.3 release.
  • Confirm Minecraft is 1.16.5 and Forge is the matching loader.
  • Remove unauthorized client-only changes or install the same server-required files on every client.

Players on the internet cannot connect

  • Test the server from the host computer and then from another device on the same network.
  • Recheck the host firewall rule and the router’s forwarding target.
  • Confirm the host’s local address did not change.
  • Verify that the remote player is using the public address, not the private home-network address.
  • Consider carrier-grade NAT or a managed host if forwarding is impossible on your connection.

The server is reachable but feels slow

  • Check the console for repeated errors and watch CPU, memory, disk, and upload usage on the host.
  • Reduce simultaneous exploration and heavy automation while you identify the bottleneck.
  • Move to a host region nearer the players or a larger plan if the current machine is saturated.
  • Do not treat a provider’s advertised RAM figure as a universal performance guarantee; workload and player count matter.

Which hosting route should you choose?

Self-host when you want complete filesystem control, already have a reliable always-on computer, and are comfortable with firewall and router administration. It is the most flexible route, but you own every backup, update, outage, and network problem.

Choose managed hosting when friends need a dependable public endpoint, nobody wants to configure port forwarding, or the server should remain online while your personal computer is off. Confirm Java 8 Forge support, v1.3 server-pack compatibility, region, backup policy, and current pricing before paying. In either case, the non-negotiable rule is the same: install the official v1.3 server pack, run it on the compatible Java 8 stack, and give every player an identical Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge client.
