WordPress’s default maximum for an automatically generated excerpt is 55 words—not 55 characters. To change it, first check where the summary is produced: the Excerpt block has its own maximum-word setting, while generated excerpts in theme output can be adjusted with the excerpt_length filter. A hand-written excerpt is different and generally needs to be edited directly.
What a WordPress excerpt is—and what “length” means
An excerpt is a short summary displayed where a theme or block calls for one, such as a post listing. When no manual excerpt is supplied, WordPress can generate one by trimming the post content. The documented default maximum for that generated excerpt is 55 words; the core length setting counts words, not characters. WordPress Developer Resources: excerpt_length

When trimming is needed, WordPress adds a trailing marker; the documented default is […]. The ending marker and the word limit are separate settings. WordPress Developer Resources: excerpt_more
Generated excerpts, manual excerpts, and the More tag
- Generated excerpt: WordPress derives summary text from the post content when an explicit excerpt is absent. The automatic trim is the context affected by
excerpt_length. - Manual excerpt: This is editorial text entered for the post. WordPress does not automatically trim it through
wp_trim_excerpt()by default, so change the text itself if it is too long. <!--more-->quicktag: This is not an excerpt-length control. It marks where content is split for templates that display content withthe_content(). A template usingthe_excerpt()instead controls summary output separately. Choose the adjustment that matches the output
| Where the summary comes from | What to change | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress Excerpt block | Its maximum-word setting | That block’s excerpt display, not a universal site-wide limit |
| Automatically generated excerpt in theme output | excerpt_length filter |
The word limit used for generated excerpts |
| Manually written excerpt | Edit the excerpt text for the post | That editorial summary |
| Ending marker on a trimmed excerpt | excerpt_more filter |
The trailing text, not the word limit |
Change the Excerpt block’s maximum-word setting
If the page or post design uses WordPress’s Excerpt block, start with that block’s settings. Its documented maximum-word control defaults to 55 words. This setting belongs to the block; do not assume it governs excerpts rendered by every theme template or other component. WordPress documentation: Excerpt block

Change generated excerpt length with code
For automatically generated excerpts in theme output, WordPress provides the excerpt_length filter. This example sets the limit to 20 words:
function mytheme_custom_excerpt_length( $length ) {
return 20;
}
add_filter( 'excerpt_length', 'mytheme_custom_excerpt_length', 999 );The example and late priority are from WordPress Developer Resources. The 999 priority helps the callback run after callbacks registered at lower priorities; a theme or plugin may also add filters, so the result can depend on the site’s code.

Put the callback in code loaded by the site, such as a theme’s functions file. A child theme or site-specific plugin can keep the change separate from a parent theme, so a parent-theme update is less likely to replace the customization. This filter changes generated word count; it does not rewrite a manual excerpt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChange the trailing text without changing the length
Use the separate excerpt_more filter when you want to change the marker after a trimmed excerpt. WordPress documents […] as the default trailing string. Changing this filter affects the ending, not the number of words displayed. WordPress Developer Resources: excerpt_more

When an excerpt plugin is useful
A plugin is optional for the basic task: the Excerpt block has a built-in maximum-word setting, and developers can adjust generated excerpts with a core filter. Consider a plugin when you need added behavior or prefer a settings interface rather than site code.
Advanced Excerpt
The Advanced Excerpt listing on WordPress.org describes options to preserve selected HTML, count by words or characters, exclude markup from the count while keeping selected tags, set excerpt length and ending text, complete the last word or sentence, and add a read-more link.

How to decide whether a plugin fits
- Rendering location: identify whether the summary appears in an Excerpt block, a classic theme template, or another component.
- Excerpt type: determine whether the post uses a manual excerpt or a generated trim.
- Counting method: core
excerpt_lengthuses words; the Advanced Excerpt listing also describes character-based counting. - Formatting and ending: check whether you need selected HTML preserved, custom ending text, or a read-more link.
- Site fit: verify the plugin’s current maintenance and compatibility information, then confirm that its behavior matches the active theme.
Other excerpt-related plugins appear in the official directory, including options focused on links or automatic excerpts. A directory listing alone does not establish that a plugin suits a particular site; assess the current listing against the feature you need.
