Open My Files > Downloads to find most files downloaded to a Samsung Galaxy phone, then tap a file to open it. If it is missing, search by name and check My Files’ Recent view, file categories and storage locations. Some streaming or protected content stays inside the app that downloaded it.
Find and open a downloaded file
- Open My Files. If you do not see it on the Home screen, swipe up to open the app list and search for “My Files”; Samsung says it is commonly in the Samsung folder.
- Tap Downloads. This is the usual starting point for downloaded content.
- Search if needed. Tap the search icon and enter the file name, then tap the matching result.
- Open the file. Most ordinary downloaded files open from My Files. Depending on the file type, your phone may ask which app to use.
Samsung’s UK file-management instructions describe Downloads as the place to find downloaded content. Menu names and screens can differ by Galaxy model, software and region.

If the download is not in Downloads
Files can be stored in different places depending on their type and the app that saved them. In My Files, check these views:
- Recent: Useful when you remember opening or saving the item recently but not its folder.
- Categories: Browse by file type, such as images or documents.
- Storage locations: Check available locations such as internal storage or an SD card. An app may not have saved the item to the Downloads folder.
- Search: Search by the full or partial file name if you know it.
These options are described in Samsung’s guide to finding downloaded files. If the file came from a browser or another app, check that app’s download list or settings as well; its save location may differ.

When a download will not open or cannot be found
Check whether it finished downloading
Open the notification panel and look for the download’s progress or completion notification. An incomplete download may not be ready to open. If a download never starts, check your internet connection and available storage. Some websites also restrict downloads. Use trusted sites and retry only after confirming the connection and storage are adequate, as Samsung advises in its UK support guidance.
Return to the app for streaming or protected content
Offline films, music and other protected media may be accessible only in the service’s app rather than as a normal file in My Files. Reopen the app that downloaded the content. This is a content-protection limitation, not necessarily a damaged download; browsing folders cannot bypass the restriction. Samsung notes this limitation in its download-location guidance.

Check permissions for images downloaded from the Google app
For images downloaded specifically from the Google app, Samsung’s UK support page recommends checking that app’s storage permission. This is an app-specific troubleshooting step, not a general fix for downloads from every app.

In My Files, check Recycle bin if the feature is available and enabled on your device; restore the file if it is listed there. Samsung says the feature is not available on every model and that items in the bin are permanently deleted after 30 days. See Samsung’s file-management guidance.

Copy or move a download to a computer or external storage
These steps are optional: you do not need to transfer a file to open it on your phone. Samsung documents copying or moving files between internal storage and supported USB or SD storage. An SD card is not supported by every Galaxy model; USB storage requires a compatible connection, including OTG support.
Use a USB drive or SD card
Connect compatible storage using the required adapter or OTG connection, then use My Files to copy or move the item between locations. Check your phone’s model support, connector and OTG compatibility before relying on a particular drive or card.

Transfer files to a PC
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer; some cables are charge-only.
- On the phone, select Transferring files/Android Auto when prompted.
- If a phone-data permission prompt appears, tap Allow.
- Open the phone’s storage on the computer and copy the file from its folder.
