WordPress 6.9, code-named “Gene,” was released on December 2, 2025. Its headline changes focus on collaboration and editing: block-level Notes, a Command Palette available in more parts of WordPress, and new layout and content tools. It also includes performance optimizations, accessibility work, and developer-facing changes. The screenshots below are official WordPress showcase imagery; they illustrate the features but are not independent test results.
What’s new in WordPress 6.9?
The release announcement frames 6.9 around creating and collaborating. Matt Mullenweg described it this way: “WordPress 6.9 brings major upgrades to how teams collaborate and create.” The most visible additions are Notes for in-context feedback, broader Command Palette access, clearer visual drag-and-drop, fit-to-container text, and new blocks and controls.

Notes let editors attach feedback to an individual block rather than leaving comments detached from the content they refer to. A collaborator can reply to a note, edit or delete it, and resolve it when the discussion is finished. The WordPress 6.9 Field Guide says the post author receives an email notification when a note is added.
#1 Best Overall
This is an editing workflow for collaboration inside the editor; it does not establish that every WordPress site has the same notification setup or team process.
Where is the Command Palette available?
The Command Palette is no longer limited to the writing editor. The official feature showcase describes access from different areas of WordPress, including post writing, the Site Editor, and plugin browsing. The release announcement also highlights expanded availability in the dashboard. It provides a command-driven way to reach actions without navigating through menus each time.
What editing tools and blocks are new?
Visual drag-and-drop
WordPress describes clearer drag handles and a live preview while moving layout items. The intent is to make it easier to see where an item will land as it is repositioned.

Fit text to its container
A new typography option adjusts text size to fit its container. The showcase identifies Paragraph and Heading as the initial supported text-based blocks, making the setting useful for layouts where text needs to fit a defined space.
New blocks and content controls
- Accordion: a block for expandable content.
- Time to Read: a block that presents an estimated reading time.
- Math: support for displaying mathematical notation, including MathML.
- Gallery aspect ratios: fixed aspect ratios for Gallery images provide more control over image shape.
- Additional details: the Field Guide also discusses a Terms Query block and other editor changes.
These are additions to the editor and block toolkit, not a claim that every theme or workflow will use them in the same way.
Does WordPress 6.9 make my site faster?
WordPress 6.9 includes real performance work, but the release materials do not establish a universal speed gain or a percentage improvement for an individual site. The showcase says the changes are intended to improve Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), a measure of how quickly the main content appears. Whether a site improves depends on factors such as its theme, plugins, hosting, and page content.
Rank #3
The Field Guide details implementation changes including on-demand block styles for classic themes, minified block-theme styles, a higher inline-style limit, deprioritization of non-critical scripts, optimized database queries, improved caching, WP-Cron changes, and a template-enhancement output buffer. These describe changes in WordPress core; they are not a benchmark of a particular site.

What accessibility changes are included?
The official materials describe improvements to screen-reader announcements, focus handling, cursor placement, and avoiding unnecessary CSS-generated text for assistive technology. Their reported counts differ in scope and wording, so they should not be collapsed into one total:
- The WordPress 6.9 feature showcase says “70+ accessibility fixes and enhancements.”
- The December 2, 2025 release announcement says “More than 30 accessibility fixes.”
- The November 25, 2025 Field Guide enumerates 10 enhancements and 23 bug fixes.
These reported improvements are not a claim that WordPress 6.9 makes every site accessible or guarantees conformance. Site accessibility also depends on its theme, content, plugins, and implementation.

The Field Guide covers changes across core and editor APIs, including the Interactivity API, HTML API, Block Bindings, DataViews and DataForms, UTF-8 handling, query cache keys, URL escaping, and email handling. These are primarily developer-facing changes rather than visible features that every site owner will notice.

Abilities API and adjacent AI packages
The Field Guide describes the Abilities API as a unified, machine-readable registry for functionality in WordPress. It is included in Core. A separate beta-era announcement said the MCP Adapter and PHP AI Client launched alongside 6.9 but were not part of Core; that statement describes the packages’ status in the beta announcement, not a current guarantee about their status.

Make WordPress Core reports more than 400 Core Trac tickets, over 125 Core enhancements and feature requests, and more than 250 Core bug fixes. Separately, it reports 440 enhancements and more than 570 bug fixes for the Block Editor, Site Editor, DataViews, and related Core APIs. These are distinct reported categories and should not be combined into one release-wide total. The release announcement separately says more than 900 contributors, over 279 first-time contributors, and more than 340 enhancements and fixes.
What do the WordPress 6.9 screenshots show?
The feature showcase images illustrate Notes, drag-and-drop, performance, accessibility, the Abilities API, and individual blocks. They are useful for seeing how WordPress presents a feature, but they do not establish that the pictured behavior was independently tested or will look identical on a particular site. The screenshots should be understood as official product illustrations, not evidence of site-level outcomes.
